Adjusting my table- long or short

Do the pros prefer to play 3-c on a table that plays a little long or one that plays a little short? --------- Your thoughts in this matter will be greatly appreciated as I am getting ready to adjust my Sogaard one way or the other.------- I know which way I prefer, what about you?------ It is a simple adjustment, a matter of one hour to make the adjustment either way.

Thanks Eddie, --- Hope things are well in Baltimore! ------ More questions! Can a table play too long? --------- And if so, knowing the cushions are good, have you ever played on a carom table that plays too long and how would you judge how long is too long?----- anyone?
Respectfully, Dan

How do you make a table run longer?

long

When a cloth is stretch to tight it will play to long. A lot of guys think the tighter the better but to much stretch the cloth will slide. But it should be stretch but not to tight.

I've heard that you adjust the height and the angle of the rubber to change the "length" of the table and a higher cushion will tend to make the ball go longer.

I don't think longer is necessarily good. I think you want angles that are consistent and relatively low-loss bounces.

As for tightness of the cloth, The "experts" I've heard all agree that the bed cloth should be as tight as possible.

cloth

Sorry to disagree with you Bob, but I 've seen cloth stretch so tight the balls wouldn't bounce just slide unless hit was straight on not on an angle. Also remember the first couple days when cloth was just installed it will slide anyway. You want it tight but not over stretched.

I agree with Bob. The tighter the better. Last table I saw put together there was 2 guys pulling absolutely as hard as they could using sheet metal vise grips to hold the cloth. The guys doing the work are the best in the business.

As far as long vs short. Well IMO the table should play to the basic systems first and formost. Its a real drag when the ball pops short off on the 3rd rail. Also there should be nice slide backing up out of the corners. If the angle opens up, backup shots have to be played perfectly. Many times this shot has to be passed up since there's no margin of error what so ever. Basically the shot isn't on the table, and that aint right.

Conclusion: I feel a long angle table presents more shots. Short angle takes shots away. Maybe its just my style of play but it seems its much easier to shorten a shot on a long table than lengthen a shot on a short table.

The real conclusion: When someone says the table plays long its because its playing right vs a table that hasn't been set up correctly and or is filthy dirty with balls that are 5 years old (2mm undersize) in a public room where the owner either knows nothing about the game or doesn't give a damn.

Good luck with the Sogard. I think you have a project on your hands. May your saw be sharp and your hand steady.

Tighter and faster is better. See the pros. Brand new cloth stretched tightly will play crazy, way too much slide, and such. Give it a couple days. If you're playing on a table in the US and the cloth is old, and it's still playing way too long, something is wrong.
People play on heated tables with perfect rails, on perfect Verhoeven type tables, and they will still try to keep the cloth and rails clean, because any debris from play will slow them down. Fast tables don't just 'happen', you have to keep them that way.
If it still plays that way, your rails are screwed up or you're used to short tables.

Dan,
I still have a set of shims for the rails that will fit your table. Let me know if you want to try them. Takes about an hour to install.

@tiger

Hi

I have a Soren Sogaard, and would like to learn about how to lengthen the table.

What's this about shims?

Please let me know

Thanks
