Advanced Game / Drill - 2 BALL

Hi collin,

I have actually used this as a training method for a long time. a friend advised me it for my 8ball game mainly, but i find it very useful in straight pool to manufacturing better break balls. bumping a ball in the triangle just outside helps a lot.

I don't really have a point system, but i usually do this:
i play a rack of 8ball and i try to touch a ball of my opponent on every shot.
After i got better, i try to push my opponents balls into clusters so that if i miss my shot, my opponents will have a very tough time to run out in one visit. sometimes all it takes is one bump to make a rack almost impossible for an amateur to run out. I highly recommend this "drill"

Rather than have the quirky final shot of the rack, I propose this change:

When only 1 ball remains, the second point is scored by scratching the cue ball into a called pocket. If you only make the ball, the game ends and your opponent has the following break. If you do both (clear the table), you get to break.

I like this concept Bob, more measurable, but wonder if it penalizes the player who gets to the last ball too much. Haven't tried this, but I'm guessing it's less than 50% to make a ball and scratch from most positions on the table.

Perhaps players can take this into consideration when planning the out and increase the percentage.

I'll give it a try!

Having grown up playing English Billiards I quite enjoy the losing hazard, as this video kind of demonstrates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keznf66dSHE

Glad to hear you've got some benefit from this type of drill Solly.

I tend to get bored with roll, stun, soft positional practice so probably concentrate too much on drills / challenges involving multiple rails, banks and power shots, so my finesse / touch shots tend to suffer when playing matches.

This 2 Ball / Caroming drill has improved my soft work finesse around clustered balls, but still provides enough challenges to make the practice enjoyable.

I doubt I'd ever have the patience to play 14.1 well, I'd occasionally take on riskier shots just for the enjoyment of playing an attractive / clever looking shot over a few easy roll ins.

Cheers,
Colin

This game will be covered in my column in "The Break", "Stroke" and "Rack'Em" magazines in the September issues. They should be up about Sep. 6th. See: http://www.onthebreaknews.com/
That's great Bob!
It might encourage more of my friends to try out my 'made up' games. They're a lot more fun and challenging than the same old UK 2 Shot rules everyone plays around here. I refer to it as dribble chess block-pocket pool.
