Advice needed for upcoming all around match

So my local pool community has a Facebook group and I started a thread looking for action and now I have a match in a few weeks playing a set of 10 ball for $250, he set of eight ball for $250 and a set of one pocket for $250 with all my friends looking on so it's more about the pride than anything.

Back when this guy was playing in our bca league he was rated an eight and I was rated a nine so I feel I have a slight advantage in the eight ball and the 10 ball but he lives and breathes one pocket, whereas I have little experience.

What practice would you recommend and what DVDs or drills?

Also I want to order a Predator Z shaft and I need to know what kind of connection I have here it's a predator butt.

Thanks so much for any advice.

That's a quick release joint ,, but I'd think twice before making that change till after , totally different games , I'd first learn breaking go to you tube learn that and put in one pocket shots , and watch some matches one pocket is a chess game of moves

I was watching the match between Johnny archer and Dennis Orcollo and they mentioned that Johnny practices 14.1 and I'm wondering what aspect of straight pool is so good for your game? Is it the beginning stages when there are clusters? Is it the end stage when you're setting up for the break out ball? I think they said he just throws the balls out there. Speaking of that match, Johnny shoots a shot that is so mind-boggling I need someone to explain what he was thinking I'm gonna post a video in a minute

Well 14-1 teaches you how to break out clusters however in one pocket you have to make sure your breaking balls out to your pocket what I do is practice groups of balls in one pocket and learn to make shots in your pocket that won't give you opponent a shot in his that's the key to the whole game

I would practice the break, kicks, clearing single balls from the pocket with control, and shots where you try to completely clear the balls from a side of the table (even if it's nowhere close to a sane option in a game.)

Don't leave return banks in the match.

Force follow is your friend.

I'd say play to your strengths. Do what you can to win the 8 ball and 10 pocket, then free roll at the one pocket with no pressure or expectations. This is your best chance of booking a winner.

It's too late to change your game. Don't switch cues. Don't try to develop your break or change a weakness into a strength. Instead, dust off your strengths.

Play the ghost playing 10 ball. Get to where you're running out open balls consistently and feel good with the range of shots that come up. Dial in your speed control and your touch. Play some 8 ball to make sure you're seeing the patterns well.

If you can execute what you're good at and keep the routine the routine you'll be ok. If you try to reinvent your game or focus on peripheral parts of the game you won't help yourself. The game will be won or lost by who runs out open racks in the 8 and 10 ball, focus on that and take the money.

Based on the limited information, if you were the original poster, in what order would you want to play the sets?

I assume 1-pkt last.

All good advice however if he loses one of those he should atleast know basic one pocket strategy a straight shooter with a good safe game has a chance in one pocket if he knows the basics , the break would head that list short rail banks and sticking the cue ball in the rack would head the list ,

I actually stipulated that I wanted to play the eight ball first so I could get warmed up with easier shots then the 10 ball next and the one pocket last I've been playing the ten ball ghost for four hours the last three nights and I never practice that much and my game feels so good right now.

I really feel like the best part about gambling is how much more you practice knowing you will be gambling.

So just a sidebar Johnny had made an epic comeback against Dennis and was on the hill in the U.S. Open and I fully expected him to roll the 6 in and come down for natural shape on the seven but he hits the six really hard and I'm really trying to figure out what shape he was planning. He ends up straight in on the six ball in the side and gets out. I didn't make this a public video so anyone searching on YouTube won't find it it's just for us here and then I'll take it down.

If you don't know 1 hole now, you won't know it in a few weeks.
The break is very important and something you can learn quickly from a good 1 hole player. Learn the quadrant system from a good 1 hole player. Its simple and very
important.
The rest of 1 hole takes a long time. If your opponent plays aggressive, you need to be
aggressive as well, but smart. If he's reckless, tighten up and let him make the errors.
Most 1 hole games are lost on 'un-forced errors' . Just like tennis, look at the un-forced
errors for each player and you know who won most of the time.
Good luck

So here is how it went down. We agreed to $200 per set, race to 8 eight ball, race to 5 one pocket and then race to 10, ten ball. I got up 6-0 in the eight ball and some conversation finally happens regarding some shit he went through that morning and it ended with him saying, "Don't let yourself get lured into a false sense of security."

We are playing on a nine foot Diamond (I haven't played on a nine foot Diamond in 7 years) I did manage to break and run a rack and felt pretty good about how I was hitting them. I win the set 8-3 and now it's time for one pocket (This is his specialty and I spent a month trying to learn as much as possible)

His unbelievably hot girlfriend shows up for pool league on the 7 foot diamonds and he tells me she said if he doesn't win, she will ditch him as her scotch doubles partner. (she won her nine ball match)

He wins the toss for one pocket and destroys me 8to-1 the first game and I'm certain I'm going to lose 5-0 but I make a nice break and win the second game. He wins the third game and I make another nice break in the fourth game. He tries to make a ball and misses and I manage to run 8 balls! First time ever.

We end up winning every game we break and it goes hill hill and he destroys me 8 to -1

I'm feeling soooooooo confident I will win the 10 ball. I know I have more fire power. Well he is breaking like SVB and playing safe like a pro every chance he gets. He goes up 4-1 and I finally start playing like him only my safeties often look pathetic compared to his. I did manage a break and run and made some sick outs.

It's tied 6-6 and I'm giving updates to all the pool players in our local Facebook page. Lots of pressure. He wins the last four games like a boss and takes the $400 off the light.

It was great action with no issues whatsoever. I'm stoked because it gives me a reason to train hard for a rematch.

Based on what you have read, what advice would you give? Thanks for following.

Sounds like you both played to your ability and maybe better for you in one pocket since you said you don't play that and he does. Don't know what other advice you can have aside from play more LOL. Tournaments maybe to get used to pressure of competing vs league games. I never found league games to be much pressure even in the playoffs, but playing a $10 tournament against a C player I feel like I'm about to miss every shot LOL

Sounds like a fairly even and fun match up, congrats! Good, friendly competition is important for the game, regardless of the outcome or the stakes.

Smoking hot girlfriend?

You are not deanoc. We need pictures.

Sounds like you had a good time. Play more 1 pocket and your safety play should improve. Getting out of safeties is as important as playing them.

Since you were playing for $200 per set, you won one and he won two, my advice is bring a calculator next time.

Ps. In all seriousness, you guys are pretty evenly matched. Should be a good opponent for a repeat match.

It's pretty obvious that what you need to do is get a smoking hot GF and have her threaten to dump your ass if you lose

I guess you could say we were playing for $400 per set. I think this is a case of semantics that has been addressed before.
