advice needed for younger(college age) player

My advice would be that you keep your priorities in place. College first, pool second. As for the bank shots, they will not be as intimidating as you imagine once you learn to make them.
Start at one end of the table and practice simple banks, using a fairly soft hit on the cue ball. Repetition is the key.
Once you've begun to pocket a fair amount of the short banks, move on to the longer ones from one end of the table to the other. The two are essentially the same except for speed.
Good luck. :)

Make school a priority, get that degree and get a job. Pool will always be there.

As intriguing as it can be, pool is really a silly thing to know how to do.

Just like as has been said by others. Keep your priorities in order. Your college education comes first & foremeost. A friend of mine flunked out because he spent most if not all of his time on campus in the University Student Center Pool Room. I dropped out of college, which is a long story in & of inself, which I will spare everyone. However, it may have been the worst decision of my life.

As to the bank shots that you hate, as has also been said by others, shoot them whenever you can until they become your new best friend.

Good luck in college & with your pool game, but in that order. I would much rather see you succeed at college & fail in pool, for now. Pool can come later & then you will have the best of both. You do not need to sacrifice one for the other. Please don't. The world needs more well educated people than good pool players. You can & should be both.

Best Regards,

You have a financial investment in higher education at College, relying on the Professor's Skills to impart that knowledge to you.

In the approach to learning pool, as soon as is financially possible and time available, seek out a well established School or Individual, and invest in your education.

Your location, and proximity to those opportunities will help you.

RandyG here on AZ has a tremendous track record for Instruction at all levels.

Scott Lee travels the country and is a Fantastic Instructor.

There are lots of Certified Instructors that can help you.

Good Luck, and quit thinking about bank shots.

Thanks my friend...been a long time. I still have great memories of Eau Claire! Hope to see you the next time I'm in N LA!

To the OP...cajunfats is right. As everyone else said, you have to make sure you "go to college" first...you can go to 'pool school' anytime. When you do play, pay attention to the bolded statement below...it's the total truth. The only time you see a pro bank a ball (aside from banking games) is when they get out of position...in other words, they have to! That said, banking really isn't any more difficult, if you have a repeatable stroke. It's like anything else...get a little knowledge (lessons)...practice a little (with discipline), and pay attention to what you're doing. You have Randyg (the best instructor in the country, imo) just up the road in Dallas, and I'll be coming through Waco in early Feb. If you're interested, PM me for more information.

Make sure to go to class. Seriously. I missed so many classes shooting pool in my campus pool hall. Also do become really good friends with the people running the place. Free table time and usually they're also really into pool. Make good friendly rivalries.
