Hey I wonder if lignum vitae couldn't be used? After all it has been used for pulley blocks on old ships because of its hard and smooth properties. But one cuemaker told me its too oily and wouldn't hold glue as well. Or is it too much work for too little advantage? I like wood thread joints but everytime you tighten the butt in you feel like are condensing the wood a little and few years down the road the hit suffers.

I have almost always used wood threads, Radial Pins now, but I have often thought about using phonelic or something in the shaft a little tougher than the Maple threads. I might try turng some solid phonolic today and give it a try.
Joey, what I've done many times with great success for tightening up wood threads is the use of liquid car wax. I keep a bottle of Turtle wax on the shelf and when some one complaines about the shaft getting loose I fill the shaft with the polish and let sit for about two minutes and then take the shaft by the ferrule end and sling all of the wax out. You need to not leave it in to long as it will swell the shaft more than you want. This makes for a fairly permenet repair as the wax soaks into the shaft wood swelling it and then drying, even lubricates the threads. Be sure not to leave it in for more than a couple minutes though or the shaft may swell so much as to crack.

No, I don't meen that screwing it together will crack the shaft. If left in to long the shaft can crack on it's own. I put some in a shaft and forgot about it for about a half hour and the shaft had about a six inch crack in it when I got back. The crack wasn't in the threaded portion but started about a half inch forward of the threads an ran for about 5 or 6 inches.

As a matter of fact it was a customers but it was on a cue I had built. I use a radial pin and he wanted the shafts a little snugger. No big problem making another shaft but it was one that had inlaid deco-rings so it took a little more time and effort to build. If I ever figure out how to post pictures on here I'll take a snap of it. I have swelled threads this way on McDermotts and such many times successfully before but like I said I only leave the wax in for a couple of minutes and this time I got busy and forgot about it. The crack has closed up some now as this happened about a year ago but it is still easy to see. The odd thing is that it never cracked where the threads are but down lower in the shaft starting at where the bored hole stopped. I guess it soaked down into the shaft and couldn't expand.
