Air Barrel Barry

didn't know Ray was doing that well . . .

At first I completely agree with Dogs, spectators boycotting the event instead of the pros, then after thinking I believe we all ready have. What if we were able to pump up Barry's revenue with PPV, and such? But we don't, we rely on AZB to get updates and other members to give detailed posts of what they have experienced. Look at the DCC? I love the updates! But what a cheap asshole I am for not supporting the event like I should. And I am not the only one. Big Truck does a great service promoting pool, and every time a big event is streaming someone is on here asking for updates. *New Thought* we maybe whats wrong with pool in 'Merica', It may be time for the other 90% to pony up and buy some streams...

I didn't realize Ray was doing that well. How much sponsorship money did he put into the DCC?

Absolutely-

The late Steve Elzinga of Michigan along with Curly
(true name escapes me)
ALL bust hump and log thousands of miles in the car, to drive to the places and then set up and work continuously through an event, eating on the job and on the run to do US a service they essentially get paid very little for.
That is love and a noble service to bring pool to us for our convenience,
they sacrifice theirs...

I thought about that a fan boycott wouldn't help the players get paid and in fact would probably hurt those chances, but this has been going on forever. A couple of people posted that if the players show up this year it's on them. I've been at that point now for several years. If you want to get rid of Barry the only way to do that is to get rid of the tournament. Perhaps then a Phoenix can rise from the ashes.

Yeah, a lot of tireless work done. And what do the fans care? Jay Helfert got raked over the coals on here for being involved in the event last year, like he was somehow at fault for Barry not paying the players. All he was trying to do was help too.

Does anyone else think that there's a more fundamental problem than one individual - that we all expect a bunch of added money to come from thin air?

There's simply no financially sound way to produce a big tournament with big payouts. We need to find a different model, one that almost certainly involves lower payouts for the players. That model has to make profits, not losses, for the promoter. Then you'll get financially responsible people involved, and you'll have some competition among promoters.

It's not as if a different person is going to somehow magically make it work with the large payouts that people want and expect.

We can blame this bozo, OK, but let's not get distracted from the real problem, which is that, right now, there's no value in pro pool, that it's basically a charity.

by a cheap domain, for a year or two, name the site something that sounds like his name or the name of his company, then post all the threads about his business practices there,

Exactly my point, we as a community could be doing so much more to help our cause. I know I can, can you? How long can anyone continue promoting pool without the support of those who want it all for free? Barry is just one that continues to go in the red to put on a show, and I commend him for at least trying to sell a product that has no one interested in buying. We all want TV exposure, a Pro tour and will continue to do what we do, not invest in the game through giving money to those who our actually trying to give us what we want.

I'll gladly pay him in instalments months from now for a stream today.

Barry's a fraud.

Players entry fees, seats, PPV should all not only be paid in instaments but also paid with post dated checks. Actually Barry should also pay for players hotel rooms and players will pay him back in instalements and post dated checks

There is a more fundamental problem, it's unsustainable as is. Barry Berhman apparently relies on income in arrears from vendors, sponsors, gate while the Open is required to pay in advance because of his history in order to make payouts. When this doesn't happen it becomes an issue. I heard where he said that he needs the WPA for sanctioning and they require $70,000 added money. His problem is that he doesn't have it, nor will he have it.He didn't do his due dilligence in a declining economy.

I am surprised that the WPA can't pull sanctioning if the players aren't paid with in X days.

I could not attend last October and quite frankly I'm glad I didn't because I would have been one of the many who were screwed on the vip tickets. I will not even waste my time on checking rates and booking hotel for something that night not happen.
