Air Conditioner Help!

Anyone know why my return line (Copper Piping) would be very hot, and the outside unit is humming but the fan isn't turning? I turned it off for 20 minutes to let it rest and it fired back. I also gave it a swift kick, but that didn't seem to work. What's going on? Just to keep this pool related, without the air-conditioner, my table plays really slow.

The return line is generally warm, I don't know about very hot but it is supposed to be warm. The outside fan not running could be that the motor may have burned out or is jammed. I would shut off the AC and open up the cover on the outsided unit and see if the fan will turn by hand or if it smells like burnt wires.
Disclaimer:I'm not an AC guy, this is just what I'd do. If you are electricuted or otherwise catch fire, I am not liable ;)

Have you pissed Don Purdy off yet? That's his business and he's an expert.
I don't think Don would hold a grudge, so maybe you'll be in luck and he'll respond. Calling DON .... Calling DON.... PURDMAN, come in please....
Help required in the unit behind Table 18.....DON....

Um, that was a joke... I would hope people would have something better to do than post on an A/C forum... like post on a billiards forum! :)

You mean, there isn't an A/C forum? You know, you just ruin it everyday for me. Tomorrow you're going to tell me Area 51 is a parking lot.

Oh great, Purdy is an AC guy. And I called him Donny the other day. Just my luck. I haven't found an AC forum, but I have run across a contact lens forum. Now that is exciting.

As the saying goes... Careful of the toes you step on today..... you know the rest :D

1. Fan jammed
2. Fan motor out
3. Bad motor capacitor
4. Circuit breaker(outside)
5. Circuit breaker(inside)
6. If digital controlled unit a circuit board could be out

Turn unit off before you blow out all your freon. Call repairman.

Whoa! Wait a sec... it's not real? At least I still have Santa.

I'm qualifing this, but 9 out of 10 times it's not the fan, it's the coil frozen over not allowing the air to pass through/across/over. Could be a freon leak at the coil (or somewhere else) condensation frozen over . The copper line is the inbound line and the larger dim pipe is the return line (betcha that larger one is frosted up pretty good) Bottom line, turn everything off (coil would have to defrost anyway) and call the AC guy. Among other things, they'll do a sniffer test, check the freon level and of course determine if your fan is working correctly.

I noticed an off topic post very much like this (ie. about a/c) on ccb, it did not have one single reply. I think that says something good about ccb. Splinterhands are you ccb's Sid Vicious?

Hey! Just got back from the Toe Jam Forum! Air conditioning? We don't need no stinking air conditioning. It's been like 100 degrees here for the last three days. Think the dinksboomers on the end of my shoelaces melted!
Coastydad :) Parked in an end space in Area 51!
