Get a porper travel case to put your case in, get a cheap small padlock to keep the quick thief away. When you are checking your baggage (you have to check cues), stay with it through the TSA process, as they might want you to open it.

I haven't ever had a problem at all.

I also use a porper travel, but I also put that inside a big duffle with my clothes and stuff. Seemed to work pretty darn good.

I'll always throw mine in with my golf clubs so it only counts as 1 piece instead of two. Never had any problems. Shawn bought a big duffel bag and throws his in there wrapped with towels or clothes. If I'm not going to be golfing I do the same as Shawn. amc4

I disagree with the padlock...if they see it they will cut it off and go thru it, IMO. We had one problem with Delta....the cue came back Ok...just the finish was all dinged up...badly. They had lost the package and when they found it the package...a hard case wrapped in bubble wrap inside a shiping tube was all wet and broke in half with the cue poking thru. After that we started tell the people at the baggage claim what exactly was in the cases...we also got the Poper travel cases (you can't do wrong there). Southwest told us that they shouldn't have to manually inspect the cases if it went thru the x-rays w/o incident. They advised us to take ANYTHING that was metal out of the case...we had absolutely no problems with SouthWest....baggage wise, lol.

If it fits what about putting in your suit case?

Carry a copy of the Constitution with you and ask the TSA for a search warrant before they search your property.

Then, after they're done violating your person, get a Greyhound bus ticket.

P.S. I mail my stuff to my destination before I fly, to keep it from the hands of the thugs.

That's what I did. The wife and I used an oversized suitcase and were able to put both our cue cases in their with our clothes. Worked well.

If the cue case won't fit in your luggage (my Instroke only just did), I've heard of people putting just the cues in their suitcases and then carrying the case as their carry-on.

Good luck.

I have a suitcase that's big enough for me to lay my cue in it diagonally. I just wrap it in a towel and pack clothes around it. I've taken it to New Orleans, Vegas and Connecticut that way. Haven't had a problem so far.

Other guys I went to New Orleans with bought the travel case and carried 3 cases that way. Worked great for them.

Good Luck!

I don't want to have any bruises on my cue case so I always put it in one of those big black plastic (garbage) bags and tape the opening shut. It does protect the case from dirt and small dings and bruises. As a precaution, I always use duct tape close the "lid" of my case so it won't open by accident.

Ah,you've flown in and out of Miami International. :(

I'd go with the large suitcase idea.....preferably a hard shell case.

traveling with cues

I use the haliburton-zero case.At my first check-in I have the inspector go through the case then lock it. He/she then affixes a sticker and signs or initials it.I have never had any problems doing this and have flown to many destinationsns......hope this helps.

You might want to do a search for an old thread on this. Last year about this time as APA in Vegas time approached there was a pretty long thread with some other ideas in addition to the ones here. I though the best idea of the bunch was to mail/ship it to the Rivera directly, you can find the address on their website, then mail/ship it back to your home. I think you can arrange for the Riv to ship it back for you.

I am from Ohio and when I fly to Vegas, I just put my cue case inside my luggage and just check in the baggage and off I go. I have never had a hard time with it both ways.. I have a 2x4 leather instroke case with 2 cues...

Has anyone used fed ex or ups to ship their cues to their destination and avoid all the hassles?

Yeah but there have also been a lot of posts lately about shippers damaging or losing cues.

I'm with LS on the padlock. From what I understand, they make special locks that the TSA can open. I haven't seen them but a friend of mine said they've used them. I think they can be bought at the airport & there's a store that's in most mall's that has them... I can't remember the name of it, but it's small (not a dept store) & they carry luggage.

My luggage has been pulled for random's a couple of times & they always go through everything. Sometimes they go through it with me there & other times I haven't been present.

The airline folks will definitely go through your stuff--whether you're there or not. The padlock on your Porper Travel case is just an invitation for them to do it. I travel with my cues everytime I go down to VA for the U.S. Open and I have to check them in. I have a Talisman 2x4 that I stuff in a Joe Porper travel case and check it in. When I got to VA, the shafts were in different slots from where I normally put them which meant that they checked it after I checked it in.

If you really want to lock up your Porper travel case, then do what I do. I use the TSA lock where if the airport folks really want to go in, they can because they should have a special key. Each lock has a combination which only you would know, but underneath it there's a keyhole for airport personnel:

Here's a website for the TSA lock. There's an indicator on them that turns from green to red to let you know that it's been opened. I use them and have not had any problems:

My suggestions:
1) Check the liability of the carrier. Some have low per-piece maximum liability limits -> e.g., ATA has ~$2500 per luggage piece for domestic travel, meaning that if you travel with $5,000 worth of pool sticks in one case, and they lose it, you get 1/2 back. Be sure you know the limits (and that you are covered). Some of the major carriers allow you to declare a higher maximum on baggage at checking -> this helps if you travel with expensive cues.

2) Get a bag to put your case in (Porpers, Big Duffle, etc) and wrap your case in a nice big beach towel. I put a bit of packing tape on to keep the towel in place. You'll know if they examine the case and it gives another layer of insulation, and a bit more protection. DON'T put locks on the bags, as the TSA will just cut them off.

3) Check the contents at the airport.

4) If you are super nervous -> send everything FedEx or UPS insured for the value of the cues to your hotel (but be sure to contact the hotel in advance).

5) Only take cues you know you could live without if they never came back. You could get the full value from the airlines, but sometimes cues have sentimental value that no $ can replace.
