After hearing this story from a local who allegedly witnessed the match, I recent found some posts that reiterate that it happened, and more than once. Supposedly, in his prime Al Mason spotted some big-name players the 7,8 and the snap on a bar table, and beat them. How? How? Any top player is going to make one or more balls more often than not on the break on a Valley, and when he does he's out 9 out of 10 times. I have a friend who's 65 and would take that spot right now, today, for the big cash, from Anybody, anytime. Anybody want that action?

al mason

Who were these big time players that Al spotted. And who is ur 65 year old buddy that would take that spot. Because allu have to do is ask Al and he still might give it up.

I don't believe the 'snap' story.

To many players, the break would make them a cinch.
I came into QMasters once to see SVB play Cliff Joiner race to 21.
I got there at the halfway mark and never got to see Cliff shoot....
....Shane ran the set out.

To give a champion the break on a barbox, he better only break 4 mph.

I am not sure who you call big name players, but AL in his prime gave that game up to many good players and outran it, and I know this first hand I was there.

Define "champion"? Someone with a tin cup? A local "big fish in a small pond"?

All I know is this At one point in time little Al Mason was subject to outrun the
"Double TripleBrazilians":grin::wink:

I played Al about six years ago. After breaking and running the first three racks he turned and said " these pockets are a little tight". I was sick of pulling money out of my pocket by the end. He was playing just fine that day.

I have gambled against Al and been familiar with his game for decades. I find it hard to believe that anybody would give that spot to a top player though, or that any top player would lose with that spot. The breaks is just too huge of a spot to give a top player because they are going to make a ball on the majority of their breaks, and when they make a ball on the break they are usually out from there and when they aren't they usually leave you sewn up with a safe. Now the 7 and 8 I believe for sure because it isn't much of a spot at that level of play on a bar table. Sounds like the typical embellishment that tends to happen over time as stories get retold but I am certainly open to hearing more details about who these spots were supposed to have been given to. No doubt Al was a beast in his time so maybe this just comes down to some of those telling the stories just having a really relaxed definition of "big name players" or "top players".
