Frank Alvarez will not attend the WPC.

From www.worldpoolchampionship.com

"after American Frank Alvarez informed tournament organisers Matchroom Sport on Thursday morning that he would not be travelling to Taiwan due to illness, 30 year-old Gandy Valle from Davao City was only too happy to take his place in Group 13."

Joseph Cues, do you know this fellow from Davao City?

Not quite!

So I guess he moved here recently from the Philippines.

The way things seem to go, reserves don't have to come from the same nationality/country as the player being replaced.

That seems odd. I was under the impression that the U.S. had a certain number of spots. If that's the case, is this guy a citizen by way of marriage or something?

My guess is that since they are so close to the tourney date, they went with a reserve from the waiting list of people who played in qualifiers but didn't make it.

That's right, Mike. I must defend their actions in this case. Last minute cancellations, and this qualifies as far as any American going to Asia is concerned, are a nightmare for tournament organizers and directors.

If any American finished second in one of the Taipei qualifiers, they should have gotten the invite, but I do not know this to be the case.

I don't think any Americans played in those qualifiers.

IIRC Valle played in 3 qualifiers and finished 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd. So he had the best average finishes and got the spot.

Not to mention the fact that he was already in Taiwan on the eve of the tourney ;)
