Does anybody know of any decent places to play in this area? I called a few places but...they seemed clueless! and this is, apparently, their town. Preferably some place with tournaments, action, etc. I called one place and they didn't even know the kind of tables they had. I called another and they said they don't allow any kind of gambling...I was a little taken back...lol.

ABQ is maybe the worst town in the country for pool. There is one place called Palace Billiards there that may be worth anything. There is also another place but I would not recomend it.

Yeah...I thought LA, CA was pretty bad...lol. Doesn't sound like much is happening in Abq, NM either...lol. I was at Doc & Eddy's like years ago...not sure what's happening there. Pretty sad!

I was there in February coaching volleyball and met another fellow Coloradoan at Doc & Eddy's. Tables were in okay shape (9-footers) and the atmosphere was fine (didn't feel threatened). Right off of the main Interstate.

There was another place that looked to be upscale in the downtown area with a small amount of tables, but I didn't go searching it out. Anodyne? Maybe it's not upscale, don't know.

The Slate Street place looked cool but it was a little bit of a drive from the UNM campus. Rio Rancho is a nice area and we ended up playing some volleyball games at a large high school straight out of Texas.

You want the details of pool halls for Albuquerque....

Doc & Eddy's - Olhausen 9' with buckets for pockets, and different felt on every table (drives me nuts in tournaments).....but.....the waitresses....oh the waitresses *borat voice* ...Very Nice! (Older players here during the day)

Billiard Palace - Diamond 7' and 9' . Valley 7's, and one Snooker table. Felt on the 9' is umm...well I hope you have a good stroke cause it's pretty slow. The 7' diamonds just got new felt on them so they are a little faster. (This is where people are during the night)

Foos Shack (used to be Golden Cue, and it's all ages)- New guy turned it into a foosball shack but still has four of the original Gold Crown I or II 9' that were in there and they just got re done new felt and rails, (Probably the best playing tables in town, shhhhh....nobody else knows this yet. It's where i practice on the "good" tables haha)

Slate Street (not Albuquerque, it's in Rio Rancho) - It's too far of a drive for me, or anyone that lives in Albuquerque to drive to regularly. They have Gold Crown IV I believe. These table play nice but they are a little low. Far as I know, nobody plays there. (when I say nobody, I mean pool players. not literally nobody)

Thats the low down on our crappy pool scene....so please come down and make it better people!

We don't even have a State Tournament anymore :-(

I think the room is called "One Up".

Downtown about Main & 1st.

Claude & I stop there every year. Great tables and super service.

Some Local help me here.

Yeah, 1-Up is downtown on Central and 2nd st. and has GC4s that play great. Very nice place with music, dancing, food and pool in the background. Doc & Eddys is nice, good food and people, old equipment. I think they have Olhausen tops on Montana frames, very generous cut pockets, alternating Simonis and Championship cloth. They have $10 tournaments on Mon and Thurs and cheap money games can be found. Billiard Palace has a little of everything going on there, right behind a topless bar, my least favorite. Sorry bfdlad had a bad time in Albuquerque, things just weren't set up right for him. Best tables are at 1-up and Slate Street, GCs, never been to the Foosball place, no beer/wine, kids used to hang out there when it was the Golden Cue.
:p

in Albuquerque? Work? Vacation? Road trip?

Careful, Maybe the 'clueless thing' is just a hustle.

I attended some classes and worked in a gas station there in 1968. Did not stay in a Holiday Inn-so I can be of no help to you.

Have fun.

Take care buddy

I would avoid Corner Pocket-Once at a WPBA event it was announced that all WPBA players could practice there for free. So me and 3 players go down there. No one knew anything. They carded everyone even though no one was going to drink and no one close to 21.

When they insisted on seeing my ID ( i was 55+) with an attitude no less, I couldnt take it and left. The ladies wanted to stay and im pretty sure i damaged a friendship over it.

Bill, you're funny...careful...you know what they say about curiousity. LOL! Just kidding...All my family is from there and I will be there soon.

Corner pocket closed years ago.
1up used to be called the Carom club and its not a pool hall its a night club.
And the strip club that was next to billiard palace closed years ago.

Roger-

I like your chances in a family ring game. But-remember-you will probably be eating food prepared by someone who lost in that ring game.

Enjoy

One place there that I will not mention the name got a real inexpensive exhibition booked due to another deal that was made. The exhibition was featuring Earl Strickland and John Schmidt. When we got there they had their league on that night and so players could not really come over and watch, they also had a Karaoke deal on right by the table that the show was to be on and so you could not hear what the players were saying in the exhibition. I toldthe management that this was a little strange. Nothing couldbe done about it I was told. So there we were with a full pool room, half players but playing in league and the other half watching karaoke. So there were maybe 3 people watching the exhibition with Earl and John. I suggested that we just leave but John and Earl said "No lets do what we do" so they silently went through the motions of a exhibition as nobody could hear anything anyway and went back to the hotel. Thats my last impression of ABQ.

We might have a good town for pool but if u want to be a mma fighter Albuquerque is the place to be. Oh and we have casinos. ...pool,poker,pain?
