Allen Gilbert has died

With great sadness, I report to you that Allen Gilbert died peacefully early
yesterday morning, July 15, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in
West Los Angeles, after battling a long illness. He was 77. As you know
Allen was seven times United States National 3-Cushion Billiard Champion and
four times "Champ of Champs". He was also the author of Systematic
Billiards, a renowned billiards instructor, a charter and life member of the
United States Billiards Association, and a friend of innumerable players and
others in the billiards community. During his many playing years he was
also a BWA contract player and played on the world tour. He leaves a sister
and daughter.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news.

Having had the opportunity to meet Allen when I was about 16 or 17 years old where I was entering my 1st 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament, he certainly left a lasting impression on me.

This is a great loss! Best wishes to his friends and family!

Maybe not many people realize how talented he was, especially in an era of Ceulemens,Blomdahl,etc... playing otherworldly billiards, but he was a great player and one of the few Americans with enough game to compete overseas the last few decades.

First Sang Lee, and now Allen Gilbert have passed away leaving a huge hole in the American 3-C scene. These two guys helped keep the game alive in the US and will be remembered as legends for US billiard fans.

I really wish he had put out a book on avoiding kisses like he used to talk about. Would of made a great addition to 3-C instruction.
