alternate shaft wood, something harder than maple?

I would not consider any other shaft than the standard maple shaft right now, BCAPL will most likely start banning exotic wood shafts right after the phenolic tip ban dies down - lol

I've been using a Hornbeam shaft since 2007 and I like it a lot. It's a little harder and stiffer than maple but still soft enough to play. It's also very similar in color, maybe a little more towards white and a little less towards yellow. Dmitry Komarov (username: DBK) makes these shafts. I recommend to look up his posts.
I only logged to this thread to post the same: Hornbeam by Komarov. Hornbeam is a common wood for Russian cuemakers and Dmitry is one of those who make pool cues.

Shafts

Try Oak. I have made quite few Oak shafts and the consensus seem to be that
Oak out performs maple in many areas. Here is a few quotes from a player.

"I love the cue. It feels great, I love the stiffness of the oak shaft, and it deflects smartly - making aiming with english easy. The only other custom cue that I have shot with is a friend's bob frey sneaky pete. that cue is great and all, but I enjoy the hit of the cue that you made me more."

Does anyone know if there are shafts out there that are made out of wood but resistant to dings?

Dymondwood is a laminate it usually contains oak, ash, beechwood or birch.
It is both bonded and impregnated with a phenolic resin under high heat and pressure. Yes cues can be made out of it.
It will not ding even if you wack it hard on the table. Here's mine.

Nice. One of these days I'd like to give a Bobcue a try, but I've never seen one up close and have no idea if anyone in the Boston area has one.

Does anyone know if there are shafts out there that are made out of wood but resistant to dings? Maybe something like what the Diamond tables are made out of?

You might try the Eyeshaft, it is birdseye maple and plays like a dream. There are 3 grades of stiffness to choose from. Check it out at www.eyeshafts.com. It sounds like this is exactly what you might be looking for and will be VERY happy with one.

You might want to ask Scott Frost and Gus Briseno how they like theirs, I know I love mine and will not play with anything else.
