am i nuts??? aiming systems

I believe people should use different aiming systems when using different shafts.
Am I nuts?
I grew up playing with a conventional shaft. And the way I aimed is… preshot routine stand behind cue ball (shot line). Decide where I want the cue ball and ob to go. Come down on the shot. I look at the ob and ob path intended. Take a mental picture of the ob. And then I aim with 100% concentration on my cue tip. What ever English I put on the ball seems to through the ob into the pockets with very high accuracy and excellent cue ball control. I must of developed muscle memory from aiming that exact spot on the cue ball??? I’m not sure but it works well for me.
If I’m down on a shot I think I will use a little back hand English to get my brain to come up with the right results. Not always but sometimes.(( I look at the contact point of the cue ball and the ob and use the 90 or 30 rule to see where the cue ball is going.( I play on 7 footers so the to cb position is a lot tighter.) if I don’t like the path the cue ball is going to go on that 90 or 30 (sliding or rolling path). I will stand up on my shot and adjust my English and my contact point on the cb and ob, come back down on the shot to get that right(slide or rolling path)90/30 I need. Because I believe I can steer that ob with my English I put on the cb. Which changes the contact point.)) Sounds crazy but it seems to work for me. Maybe Dr Dave can explain if I’m nuts or not.

Now when I switched to a 314-2 shaft. Everything I just explained is out the window. I lost all feel of the shots. So I went looking for a new aiming system. I came up with just looking for shot lines I guess. Sighted down the cue shaft and then pulled the trigger. Looking at the ob last. Which I know your suppose to do. I became a very good shot maker but my cb control was hard to pick up. Because everything seemed different. I became a zone player. I could get into small zones but not that exact spot that I had before.
I think maybe I could train myself(muscle memory).but I don’t think I have the discipline and enthusiasm to put in the time required to create that muscle memory anymore.

So I guess the bottom line is I think there is different aiming system that work better for different shafts.

And I went to a ob-classic shaft and it plays a lot like my old conventional shaft I used to play with. So I'm guessing the ob-classic deflects close to the same as my old shaft did. Just cost a lot more money. Lol.

I would not blame my shaft, I might take a long look at my "aiming" system.....SPF=randyg

Whenever you change equipment, be it a new and different cue shaft, a putter, a different weight bowling ball, or whatever, there will be a period of time that needs to be spent getting accustomed to the characteristics of said new equiptment. :)

You are confusing the 'interesting' physics that occurs durring the millisecond of tip-CB contact, with the physics of the CB rolling down the chosen line and making contact with the OB. Aiming systems are for the later, understanding and feel is for the former.

This is a good idea. The cue should come with instructions for the aiming system it was made for.

The cue makers should also have to register what system they are building their cues for and be held to it.

In return any player caught using a different aiming system then what the cue was made for would be fined and if constantly caught doing so be banned for life from pool.

Plural -- really? Now there's a group (or family) of aiming systems that fall under the "am i nuts???" header? I guess there's something to be said for investigating multiple sources of knowledge, and "having multiple arrows in one's quiver," but wouldn't chasing all these various aiming systems cause one to him/herself fall under the "am i nuts" category?

aim/am i nuts

Sounds to me like you once had a really good feel for the game and when you changed to the other shaft the less deflection made it hard for you realize the diminished allowance for squirt and throw you had learned to play with.

I think you need to sell a shaft.

What you were doing was working fine. If it aint broke dont fix it.
