When watching pool on TV does anyone else find themselves looking in the stands to see who they might recognize?

I find myself doing this quite fequently, you can usually spot players that have already been eliminated from the tournament or are participating in the tournament.

Yes. Does that make me lame???

LOL, that's what I was wondering... I almost didn't post it :D I'm sitting here watching the WPBA and realized that I do it all the time and since I was signed on here, I figured I might as well ask.

I do the same thing jack I look at cues trying to see what they are then I usually look in the stands to see if I can see any friends! I have seen a couple!

i don't get to watch much t.v................but i know you're not alone. i had a front row seat at the open last year, and after they aired it on t.v. i've had at least 30 people say they saw me on t.v.

VaPoolPlayer,
thats cool, about the people saying they saw you on TV. when i had the front row VIP seat in Peoria in 2003, and last year when i shook Allison's hand at the very end, several people came up to me and asked if that was me they saw on TV.

kinda neat, i suppose, no big deal i guess. i think i look even worse on TV than real life. sux to be me :( good thing i am loaded.

but, to answer your question, i usually dont make a conscious effort to look around to see who i can spot. i guess if i knew where some other forum members might be i might try and check them out. have an old girlfriend that lives in Vegas now, and years ago she got a very small part in the "Honeymoon In Vegas" movie. people say they saw her, including her mom, but i never did see her, and i looked and looked.

DCP

I definitely look in the corwd, and as I've attended pro events for about thiirty years now, I tend to recognize more than a fw, though I can't put a name to every face that looks familiar.

I often have people tell me they saw me on a pool telecast, too.

I too look at the cues first, then for the players that were knocked out of the tournament, then if I recognize anyone else.
1) I like to see what cues are being played with and by whom.
2) I like to see which pros are watching the pros at the table. That says alot about who is playing, IMO.
3) I like to see if I know anyone in the crowd.

I keep thinking I'm probably looking at you, sjm, but how would I know? I try to guess which ones might be AZers.

I had a friend that used to do this during boxing matches...it's amazing who is ringside...so I started doing it, too, and continue to do it during pool matches.

Not nuts, but networking :)

Chefjeff, before I read your post, I was thinking the same thing about me. I've been a boxing fan for a long time, and whenever I'm viewing a boxing match, I'm always checking out who's sitting railside. One dream of mine is for me to be able to sit ringside in Atlantic City at a high-profile boxing event. I used to enjoy the antics of The Prince from England, King of the Four Rounders Butter Bean, the unpredictable Mike Tyson, the patience of Evander Holyfield, and, of course, one of my favorite commentators, George Foreman! :D

As far as the pool on TV goes, it's fun to see spectators, friends and acquaintances sitting railside, but for some reason, I'm usually checking out the shots and the players, the thrill of the almighty win and agony of defeat. :p

I'm just now recovering from last week at the SBE and trying to catch up. Mexican Erik Morales defeated Philippino Manny Pacquiao in a Pay-Per-View match-up which occurred last Saturday night. Manny received a brutal head butt along the way, but it did go the full 12 rounds. Read all about it here: http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2005/mar/22/yehey/top_stories/20050322top6.html

I wish that they would interview the pros and talk about the equipment they use. Show their cues and cases up close. Talk a little about their practice, how they prepare for a tournment etc. Maybe a show like Inside NASCAR is needed to promote the sport. Get a few pros together and talk about pool and do some interviews. This would be better that watching a ball drop into a pocket from the pocket cam.

It always seems as if the same people are in the front seats in front of the camera. I would like to see some more faces from the cheap seats. That is where the people I know would be sitting ( Those cheap Bast...). :D

Hey JAM,

I need to watch that fight because I just watched an old bout between Morales and Marco Antonio Barerra that was one of the greatest fights I've ever seen. That kid Pacquiano is something else, and a southpaw to boot. Morales is a madman in the ring and doesn't hesitate going toe-to-toe with anyone. This one should have been great too.

Dave

Hi, Dave! :) I'm thinking this boxing match will be on HBO this weekend, as they usually air the PPV matches on HBO a week later.

And you're right. The first Morales-versus-Barerra match was one of the hardest-fought boxing events I've ever seen in my life. Both of them never gave up and battled it out to the end with full speed. When it was over, the whole crowd stood up and gave both boxers a standing ovation with loud cheers for their excellent performance. That one will surely go down in the history books as one of the BEST bouts in boxing history (IMO).

See you on the Joss tournament trail soon, Dave! :)

Yeah- it's fun to look and pool being such a small community, i'm surprised when i dont see someone i know.

I've been on myself quite a few times and some people actually get excited about it. One counterman at one of my pool halls took 10 bucks out of his pocket and bought me a T shirt and asked me to wear it and "represent" the room at the next tourrnament.

Hopefully it will be aired soon so I can watch it. I have always loved boxing and had a friend that went pro a few years back. This kid had all the talent in the world and was supposed to give De La Hoya and Trinidad a run for their money. Damn drugs... He had a fight with Sugar Ray Leonard lined up as a pre-fight to facing Paz and he never showed. As you can tell I'm still not completely over it because I know where he could have gone.
Sorry for ranting but he was the reason I stopped watching fights for a few years. Just knowing that I should have been watching him made me sick to my stomach.

Enough of that and I look forward to seeing you at the Joss finale. Whenever and wherever that may be.

Regards,
Dave
