Amateur events in Jacksonville

Thanks Josh for the compliment to me. I do try to be nice to the players and do what I can. I would love to see you come to one of my Kings Bay events. I think you'd like it

PS
I finally learned how to spell your last name after writing it a bunch of times. :-}

Geez Louise!! You mean you were the only person running the charts? You had no backup?? This majorly SUCKS! You're a brave woman!

And wait till you learn to spell Hongsavady Vongxay 16 gazillion times, let alone pronounce it correctly. Larry Szwaczkowski was another good one.

Kay did do a really great job and I was amazed at smoothly it went with so few tables.
I just think they are being very short sighted and may just blow a great idea. Running amateur tournaments along side pro events, (gee maybe the BCA was the inspiration here) could be great. But to underestimate this group and not treat them with respect is just stupid.
But then they just do not get it, I thought they should have offered players a discount into the pro events...but no. So instead from what I saw the stands were mostly empty, I paid for one session only to watch my friend play.
It is that kind of thing that makes no sense to me. They would rather a few people pay $10 than possibly many pay $5?
I think they would have a lot better turn out for the tournaments too, if the entry fees were lower. There are so many amateur tours right now... they have a great opportunity here but they are blowing it by being cheap and shady...

Wish you would have wrote my last name about four more times there then I would have won it. heh  By the way who ended up winning the 9 ball?

I did not say I did not see or understand where the players are coming from. I do agree the conditions were bad and for those conditions it was a pricey tournament. I just stated that I was working for Dragon Promotions as a tournament director and not my own company.

The nine ball was won by Julio Delpozo and Tony Plescia took 2nd. Both of these guys play on my amateur events so it made me proud.

Have you ever heard of a tournament like this paying out less then the entry fees? To start off it was paying out 16 places and When they finally put back in $600 of about the $950 they were taking out of the 9 ball event they added 8 more places paying 17-24 which paid $25 each. Any of this seem right to you? If you want to make money or atleast break even you better get 1st or 2nd because your expenses for hotel, entry, quarters, food, and traveling there are going to get the best of you..

In my own events last place always gets their entry fee back and always has. I run my events in one day no matter how many players. It may be in the wee mornings but most of the time its around midnight to 1 am when I'm done.

Hey Barbara,
Yep I ran the three charts for each event. It was different I can tell you that but I enjoy being a tournament director and working hard for the players.

The LOSER paid the $1.00 in quarters each game.

I suppose it is okay if you win every match 7 zip. But I suspect that even the winner loses an average of 4 games per match.

But it could be worse - a lot of the coin op machines now cost $1.50.

But I have noticed that more and more owners are not opening up their tables and are making the players pay to play. That may be the wave of the future. Tournaments are a loser for room owners anyway.

A local room owner just bought the building next door and is expanding his night club activities. Says he makes more money in one night with the night clubbers then he does all month from the pool tables. Especially since the under 21 crowd have to pay a $10 cover just to get in and they are glad to pay it.

Pool tables, coin-op or otherwise, normally don't even pay for the space they inhabit. They are just a distraction for you to make money otherwise from patrons buying sodas, food, playing video games or alcohol.

None of the players you mentioned played in the amateur event. I am not sure if they played in the pro event or not.
Just wanted to say that I ran the event to the best of my ability and I had several players tell me I did a good job. I hope I did. I was there to run the events on the amateur side . I ran three charts at the same time. For me I do want to say that I am sorry of the conditions of the event.

As far as I know you have never been to one of the events that I run and you need to learn how to spell. As I have stated before I was hired by Dragon Promotions as a tournament director. As you can see by other post my job was done well as always. None of my events are nightmares. I did not have anything to do with the money figures as the players will inform you. They saw when I got the figures and when I posted them. You need to get your facts straight dead or are you just trying to stir up trouble like you have in the past. This is an information forum not a gossip column. If you want gossip got to Dear Abby or you can watch the soaps on tv

im thinkin he was just tryin to get your goat judging by his lack of spelling corrections, i hope to meet you at the next kings bay Kay.. my name is Paul, look for me in the brackets :)

PS-> Im sure everyone really appreciates your detailed follow up, and responses to the commentary. Shows how dedicated you are. Look forward to meeting you next time around!

Ok everyone I was there and played at this event....Back off of Kay all she did was run the brackets...Dragon Promotions was in charge of this tourney. It was a pretty crappy tourney but what did we expect. I knew it going in to it and took a chance. It stated on the flyer that it was guaranteed money not added. So I knew it would be very bad payouts because it would have to be top heavy. It was just like that Orlando Open at Disney. I know I will never play in one of those tourneys again I mean we could have all agreed to meet at a local pool room and everybody put in the 65 entry and put together our own tourney for probably alot cheaper and on better equipment. But hey you live and you learn....next time I will definitley not show up but It was not Kings Bays fault I go to her tourney's all the time and know that they are run well and money is definitely added so......I dont think she is to blame for this tourney put blame on the people that put it together.

Edited to remove a quote..

Well, That's because he knows he's wrong and just doesn't care. Isn't that obvious? How can pool ever go anywhere? I know people say pool players are not the greatest people in some cases but when you have people like this leading you in a circle you'll always end up back where you started.

Yes, Kay was only there to run brackets and that was done perfectly. She did nothing wrong and had no control of the money or the poor equipment.

I will look forward to metting you Paul. By the way I'm the good looking tournament director/ ;) They always tell me that I'm better looking than the male tournament directors I have.

I would like to thank all the players who did come to the event at the Hyatt and for the good words you have spoken about me. I really appreciate it and hope to see all of you again in the future.

Kay, it was a pleasure meeting you down in Jacksonville. For anyone who doesn't know, Kay was there longer hours than anyone else and I saw that she ran a great amateur event despite the conditions of the equipment. As for the equipment she had to work with, they were equivalent to what you would find in a dive bar, and there was nothing Kay could do about it. To my knowledge, Predator had nothing to do with that either, since I saw someone bring them up. Dragon Promotions had a table sponsor, and I would think that they could have done something to help the situation but didn't for whatever reason.

I noticed that the ref waited until Saturday to pick on Corey Deuel about his break, when at no time was it stated that three balls had to make it completely past the side pocket. If not for that, I believe he would have won. I'm getting pretty tired of hearing people complain about Corey's soft break when they're just mad that he's perfected a technique that they haven't been able to copy, and we know you've tried. I compare it to jumping. Just because some people can't jump shouldn't mean it should be barred from being used by others.[/rant]

One thing that always astounds me is the number of people who don't turn their mobile phones to vibrate or off, but rather keep the ringer volume turned up. Then when the phone rings, they stare at it in astonishment instead of silencing the darn thing. This is rude and distracting to the players and referees. The first time it happens, the rude glares you receive should be hint enough to turn it off, and for everyone else to make sure they have done the same. It was unnecessarily prevalent this weekend, and I hope the guilt parties realise what clowns they are for disturbing a professional sporting event.

I liked the change of venue. The lighting was much better, as was the seating. I remember last year hardly being able to see since I am shorter than most, whereas this year there were bleachers so everyone could sit and enjoy the matches. It was also more convenient for some players who needed a room and could stay in the hotel. There were people who complained about paying for the parking, but there was a free lot right next to the hotel available to everyone and had plenty of space as I parked there every day/night. As I understand it, this event will be held here in the future, which I think is a welcome change.

By the way, there was an amazing female player from Spain who finished in every event she played in. I forgot her name, but I'm sure someone could post it, and her finishes, as she will be someone to look out for.

I don't understand the lack of quality equipment in the amateur event, which made it painful to watch so I didn't. I hope a lesson was learned and we'll see a change in future tournaments. However, from a spectator's point of view, I enjoyed this tournament very much, and I look forward to attending next year.
