Ambidextrous Pool Players

I do almost everything left handed except play pool. I rarely play with my left hand, but today I shot with my left hand for about two hours straight. At first it was very awkward. After about 45 minutes I started to get more comfortable with it. My stroke started feeling "in tune" and the awkward feeling in my stance went away. I threw 15 balls on the table and was just shooting any shot, and often I was running 6 or 7 balls before I missed. I went home for a while and came back, and got into a small money game with someone. Somehow playing left handed got me in stroke playing right handed. I'm wondering which pool players can shoot with their opposite hand just as good as their other hand. I know Ronnie O'Sullivan can run centuries with both hands. I am thinking that if I practice with my left hand often I might be able to get it up to speed with my right hand. Can anyone name some other players that shoot equally with both hands?

I agree with you, this can be a very good practice. I started playing lefthanded to have a fair game with my gf, whos a beginner, and last week I broke and run my first 9ball rack lefthanded. Now I almost never use the bridge for long shots, andthis is good because I'm not so good with that. And u're right, after playing left handed for a while playing right handed looks easier. ;)

I started playing opposite handed for fun aswell and I can now play some shots quite comfortably. It saves a lot of effort getting the rest/rake out to play shots!

There are many great players that play good with both hands...i'd have to say the best i've seen is a man named Mark Strain.....nobody has probably heard of him:) :D

At one time it was Buddy......

Back in Shreveport, LA - when Buddy was on the top of his game - he could & did play 9-Ball at about the 8 under his right handed game. After beating some top players - I've seen him switch hands - and still win.

Cecil

The best story I heard about being ambidextrous was when Cecil Tugwell had hustled some guys out of some money. They were evidently quite upset about that, broke his arm and his fingers, so he started playing opposite handed, and has played that way ever since. He was a great player before, and still is now playing with the other.

Little Al Romero is the best opposite handed player that I've personally seen.

I have seen Efren run racks of rotation playing left handed. I have seen Little Al run racks of nine ball playing left handed. I asked Little Al when he was in his prime if he would play Efren opposite handed and he said he would of played him even. He said he use to go on the road and play opposite handed for the hole road trip. He said Buddy did not want to play him opposite handed and Tony Annigoni told me that Al was on a trip in Northern Calif. and busted everyone he played. He was playing with his opposite hand and they played with thier regular hand.

Efren is the best I have seen with Little Al second. Jose Parica plays great to. From what Al said Keith played great to.

By the way Little Al has always told me, to play good pool you need to learn how to shoot with your opposite hand.

There was some posts about a month back which named Leonard xxxxx as being able to run 100 balls in straight pool with his off hand. I think it was Steve Lipsky who posted this. Leonard supposedly has never lost a match to Mike Segal in 14.1, having beaten him 5 times.

That was me who made the statement About ####Leonard never losing to Mike Sigel. #####Leonard's real name is Richard (dick) Leonard who was a pro player from upstate Ny Area. (Albany) When Dick relayed the story to me about never losing to Mike Sigel i myself even doubted him. So when i was at the Open a couple of years ago i talked to Mike and asked Mike if he remembered Dick and he said yes. And before i could even ask my question about them playing mike said to me " you know, i can not remember ever beating him". That statement made the story the truth for me. I have known Dick for over 40 years. But back the topic of the original post. I have personally watched Dick run 100 balls left handed several times. He once played me 150/75 and he shot left handed. I broke and he ran the 1st 78 balls on me. He was a great player in his day. to bad we all gotta get old....mike

You are a lucky guy to know ####Leonard....He is ALWAYS willing to share his knowledge. ####Leonard is like the SJM of CCB...(very respected for his knowledge and has awesome stories)....I wish he would post on this board, cause I can't stand the CCB board anymore...

I know I will get slammed for this, but the feeling I get between reading the two boards is...Reading the CCB board is like playing on a Bar Box TAP league....Reading this board is like attending a Open Regional Tournament.....

####Leonard is one of the exceptions on that board........I have chatted off line with him a few times and learned a thing or two......Doub't I ever will get the chance, but he is one of those guys from forums that I would like to meet......

Next time you run into him...Tell him RichardCranium said hi...He will probably remember that nick from a few years back.......

I shoot near the same speed with both hands. I beat the 11-ball ghost playing alternating hands (no exceptions) on 4" pockets.

You got that right, Dick is similar to SJM of this forum. CCB has definately went down hill, I'm staying away from the TAP league. Well wait, I'm not a league player anyway, yet. :D

To keep my APA team together after our rankings went up and we were killed on the 23 rule, we figured the best way to keep the same friends together was for couple of us (at least) to go left-handed. We could appeal to the APA and somehow get our rankings reset. Anyone know if this is possible?

Yes.....he did play a top ranked snooker player and her name was Karen Corr. I think they split games. Him and Wyatt play 500 to 1000 dollar sets opposite handed, and it's really something to watch them play.

Cueball,
If you are talking to Dick, please thank him for me for his participation on the internet forums. I pretty much only lurk on CCB, but I have always enjoyed his straight pool insights (I'm a 14.1 fanatic) and ALWAYS read any of his posts I can find. I'm sure he won't know me from Adam, but maybe you can encourage him to drop by AZB occasionally.

I am pretty sure he remembers you... Every now and then someone comes up with a thread at CCB "whatever happened to....." and I am almost positive Dick Leonard mentioned you (Richard Cranium) a month or two ago.
