Amway Women's 9-Ball - Illegal Breaks

I'm watching match 4 in the Amway women's tourney in Taipei and I can't believe the number of illegal breaks I've seen. The races are to 7 and I saw Allison Fisher make three illegal breaks in a row in an earlier match. The other players have made several as well. The women are breaking like "sissies".

In four matches, I've yet to see anyone break and run a single rack. The players have been Allison Fisher, Ga-young Kim, and a few Taiwan and Chinese women that rank high.

The table is a bit quirky too. Looks to be fast and I've seen the balls roll a bit funky. I know it can't just be all their level of play.

In edit: The Chinese girl in this match just made two illegal breaks in a row as I was typing this post.

Match 5, game 3, the Russian girl, N. Seroshtan finally makes a break and runs to the 9-ball and then misses it in the side and loses the game.

The announcer just said "illegal break" in english. Have no idea what he was referring to though as the rest was in another language.

At first, the 9 ball is set at the foot spot which was normally occupied by the one ball.
To be a legal break, the number of balls which are pocketed or cross the head string must be no less than 3. For example, if on break you pocket one ball and two balls cross the head string, it is a legal break. If you pocket two balls and no ball crosses the head string, it is an illegal break.
After break, first, the referee will raise his hand to indicate the number of balls crossing the head string, and then go to the foot rail to check the number of balls pocketed. If it is legal, the referee will announce and make a safe signal just like in baseball game.

Gyk came and played our lil ol weekly 9b event and she was 2/out.

I don't think the same would happen if any of the top 100 men came through.

There's a big difference in the level of play between genders.

That said, their respective fields are pretty level, so it is a battle. Still better to watch than 94% of all the other crap that is out there.

What constitutes the illegal break? 3 beyond the sides?
