An apology for powder...

Don't hate the powder, it's the abusers of powder who make a mess of pool tables.

There's nothing terribly wrong with powder. It's how powder is used that's the problem. Most people buy a bottle of Johnson & Johnson, poor a pile of it on a table like it's going to be some kind of crazy coke party, then dip their fingers or hands in it. That creates a mess.

The enemy:

If one must use powder, the best is those little talcum powder bags, where the powder is sewn into a small cloth baggy. The powder comes out through cloth in small, thin increments. It's enough to make the hands and cue nice and slick, but doesn't ever leave finger prints, or smears of powder on the table if you just grab it or lightly pat it on hands or the shaft.

A solution?

I don't like powder, but it's a necessary evil at times. I prefer to just wash my hands more often, and then use the damp paper towels to wipe down the shaft (amazing the dirt that gets on there). And it plays slick. But there are times there's no time for that, or can't do it in a match for whatever reason. When that happens, I wipe my hands and shaft often, and go to the powder bag very sparingly. It works great, and there's no mess at all. I've never left a finger print, smear or any visible powder anywhere on any table ever.

It doesn't take much to get the desired effect. The amount of powder most players use is total overkill. That's why people hate the dreaded powder. I've seen people abuse it so badly, the table looks like a winter wonderland. With all the grunge on the table already, the oils and sweat from hands handling the balls, there are a lot of skids, and the stack doesn't break open as easily.

When used properly, a person coming to the table after you're done shouldn't be able to tell if powder was used at all.

Those talcum powder bags are cheap ($1 or so) and last a long time. I've given them to powder abusers before. Made converts of some. Progress through education. :grin-square:

problem solved...same stroke every time and you don't get your powder all over everything .. your welcome!

Wash your hands and keep your shafts clean. Powder is unnecessary and should be banned from all pool rooms. Something else that should be banned is these nits who use the chalk and put it face down on the rail. Chalk dust all over the rails and you have to put your hand down in that crap. Next thing your shaft has a blue tint from all the chalk dust trapped in the grains. They have a cure for that. Bring out the talcum powder and make a mess out of everything. Makes you want to carry an extra stick to crack em in the head with.

I won't play with them nor will I play at any place they hang out.

Drives me nuts when people use to much powder. Was at a tourney once and played on a table where some "chuckle" head must have used a gallon of talc. It was so bad, I could not get my cue clean and eventually needed to rewrap the cue.

HAHA chopstick..... I was going to mention the chalk too!!!! I agree 100% Sir!!!

I have to agree, though I did like the original post. Powder on rails, cloth and object balls cause balls to slide on contact, rather than do what nature and the shooter want them to do. Also, the talc in baby powder is thought to be carcinogenic, so probably shouldn't be applied to the skin and definitely not breathed!

Imported from wrong thread-

If we start another thread-in addition to chalk courtesy/instructional advice-please consider one about fkn POWDER. POWDER all over EVERY rail and EVERY cushion.

POWDER smudges, skidmarks, snowangels, cavewall art and of course the full size POWDER HAND PRINTS on the cloth which apparently is how they remove that little bit of EXCESS POWDER so it doesn't get all over---them.

Plus-every ball on the table gets coated. It's a mess. Balls skid. It's a fkn mess.

We're not playing on a pommel horse or the parallel bars or the giant rings-please people-dial down the powder useage.

Thanks

You're all wrong! The most logical way to leave chalk on the rail is
face down. The reasons are::nanner:

>You can pick it up, chalk your stick, and put it back down without having to twist the cube around.

>After your shot ,when you reach over to pick the cube up without looking you don't stick your finger in the chalk.

> You can put an identifying mark on the bottom of the cube so you can quickly find your own chalk.

> It prevents a cheating opponent from applying a foreign substance to it.

This conflict could easily be solved if players would take their chalk with them when they leave the table.

Here is an interesting idea: Jasmine Ouschan did a "whats in the case" interview.

go to 4:22. She has a great idea. She took a roll-on deodorant bottle and put her powder in there. This way, she can just "roll on" just enough powder where she needs it without it getting all over.

Also, I personally hate the smell of baby powder. This is probably because I associate it with that substance that gets all over everything. If I shake hands with someone who uses it, I have to go wash my hands. Not just because I hate the smell, but because I can then feel it on my hands, and it gums up pretty quickly. Regular *talc* not only works better, but doesn't have that smell. You can buy it at any of those billiard supply places for cheap money.

I agree with you. Really liked Jasmine's idea. I even bought my own roll-over bottle.

Yet till today, I still can't figure out how to open the lid off the bottle :o:o

Love the talcum bag idea though. Where can I get that?

Go to the AZBilliards mainpage, and click on "marketplace" ...it basically goes to Seyberts. Look under cue supplies, then shaft care. It's on page 2.

i've got an even better idea, i'll follow Jasmine Ouschan around with baby powder and put it anywhere she wants.:D

A big part of the problem is that players insist on buying baby powder instead of pure talc meant for pool players.
Baby powder includes some additives, including some oils, that tend to become sticky and defeat the purpose of the talc. Most players just tend to use more talc which only adds to the problem.
If you want to use powder, break down and buy pure talc meant for pool/billiard players. Silver Cup is the brand I am aware of. Although it comes in a very large container, all I do is get some small containers from outdoor/camping stores and fill them with talc for my case.
Also, after applying the powder, rub it in well. It gets into your pours and does a better job.
I use talc, as noted above, and I have never gotten a complaint from anyone.

I agree with this too. Some powders are oil based and that kind just gums up on your hands and cue.I sometimes use powder but very little at a time.John B.

Francisco Bustamante will be greatly relieved to know he won't have to face you in a challenge match.
