an honest review of the hustlers

Watched the second episode last night. Sorry guys. I liked it and will continue to watch. Many of the actors/players have over the top personalities and it makes for the required TV drama but I think we all know the different personalities that make up a poolroom. Jennifer, her husband, Emily, and Mike were pretty laid back actually. Finn, the Irishman (forgot his name), and the skateboarders girlfriend were over the top. Balances out personality wise.

My wife and I watched the first two episodes. I liked it when they broke down the potential shot using the diagram a couple of times. I would tell her what I would do in that situation and see if it matched what the player did. Mike's one liners were pretty funny too.

At one point they showed a diagram then she ran the balls different as she got out of line by like 4 feet on the other side of the ball. Why the diagram then? The editing is so poor it is like reading a book with misprints and misspellings.

I think much the criticism is more from disappointment then anything else. It is quite a task to have gotten this on the air in the first place and to see it done, at least in some peoples opinions, so poorly is in fact disappointing.

We all want it to be good and most important successful. There are 8 more episodes so lets see if it gets better. The thing is, there is no learning curve because they tape them is such a short period of time. you don't get a chance to step back and see what you have and maybe correct mistakes.

I think their hope now is for a second season after they have learned a few things. See what works and what doesn't.
 
Best thing about this is that it's on TV...anything at this point is better than nothing. Stand by, Earl is in that room, once the production team gets a load of him, we'll have a much more compelling reality show.:p
 
Earl announced on twitter that he and Dennis Hatch have signed a contract for their own show.

I think this show is the litmus test. If it does well, then we'll see more pool on TV.

The bar is pretty low for these kinds of shows. I think all it has to do is not be really awful. They certainly run a lot of commercials during the show from major companies.

In the second episode the guy said it's a list of the top 5 players in New York, seems like a "real" thing to me. I mean it's a real pool hall, with real players in a real city. It's not a work of fiction. They did not say it was a list of top 5 players in the room or only for the show, a few times it was "top 5 players in New York". Anyone watching would think that was a real list of top New York players. They could have easily done a different list that was based on something real.

And I REALLY REALLY wish that they would show a game like it actually plays out and not edited versions where they move the balls around. One shot shows the 8 and 9 tied up, next shot the 8 is on the other side of the table. If the players can't run out the, they can't run out, don't show a fake game. I don't want to see a staged game when whoever wins is in the script in a "reality" show about pool.

Plus what's with the fake "top 5 pool players in New York" list? There is no way that's the right list. Maybe top players that are regulars in the room but I doubt that is not the correct list either.

I think the top 5 list is a funny idea. They have to do something goofy to generate interest so I don't have a problem with that.

I think the show has possibilities and am interested to see how it develops.

I just don't like false information for no reason.

If I lived in NY and was better than the people on the show, I'd be pissed as hell if I heard them talking about the top 5 players in NY when I knew better. Here is some dude on TV just talking non-sense about a real pool room with real players, just with fake standings, when the REAL top 5 players just sit there and know that there are a few thousand people that will think it's a real list. In military terms it's called "stolen valor" when you take credit for something you did not do.

It's probably the top 5 of his rooms regulars and I guarantee they play in other rooms. Finn works at Steinway, probably the premier room in NYC, so to him it is the top 5 in New York.

I guess I'm just more laid back and can enjoy anything that is about this game I love vs trying to break down every aspect of it that is wrong or done not filmed correctly.

This doesn't mean that they can't learn from some feedback if there is a season 2 of course...but damn...just enjoy it FFS!!

No one has to tell that guy to "act" that way. That is him on any given day in the pool room.

It's tv... Calm down. The producers created this "list" nonsense. And while I agree, it's stupid and not accurate, it's just tv.

Think of "Pawn Stars"... every single episode they're buying something for $300,000. Have you ever been to a pawn shop? Bring a $20k watch and you'll get $50 for it. IT'S TV!

The people on the show got paid pretty well, especially considering the amount of "work" they had to do.

The people on the show were casts for their personality, for the most part.
