when u go thru dealers .you pay more ..or didn't u know that ..

That is not always the case, and not a 100% true statement. Most dealers sell cues at the cuemaker's retail price (same price the cuemaker would charge). In some cases the dealers will deal off that price to a certain extent, giving you a better price than what the cuemaker would charge. So before making a blanket statement like that, please do your homework. Sorry for the off-topic post, but I could let that comment pass without a reply.

As for Andy's cues and prices...Andy's cues are some of the best values on the custom cue market today.

I LOVE my Andy Gilbert J/B cue. I bought it from a dealer at Valley Forge. Andy had another booth close by. I said that I was going to change to a harder tip for breaking. Andy heard this, and not only asked me what kind of tip, but had the tip put on himself and at no charge!! He didn't have to do this, especially since I wasn't buying the cue from him directly. He said that if it had his name on it, then he wanted the buyer to be happy. He went out of his way to make sure I was happy. Thank you, Andy!

Pet peeve

It kind of baffles me that cuemakers are expected to discount their hard work or give stuff away for nothing. If a cuemaker wants to charge $50,000 for a sneaky pete, he should be allowed to do so. Who gets hurt if it doesnt sell? If he doesn't sell it, the only person that is harmed is him. Making a cue is a form of art. The artist determines the price. Sometimes the market will adjust it upward or downward in the seconday sale, but that is determined by the market.

I fully admit I do not understand all the aspects of what makes a painting expensive at an art gallery. Besides the obvious supply/demand economic argument. I see something my 4 yr old neice could have painted and the price is $78,000. But I am not educated about art enough to challenge the artist about his price and demand a discount. Thats absurd.

If you dont understand why one sneaky pete is $12.00 and another is $950.00 then you havent done your homework. If a pool player cannot afford a Tim Scruggs, or a Barrenbrugge, or a GinaCue, he should quit whining about it and either get a second job (or third) or just buy a Chinese cue with decals and be done with it. I cannot afford the McWorter that I want without taking out a second mortgage on the house. But I am not going to start posting that McWorter makes cues too expensive, who am I to determine HIS prices? . I will just go on with my life. Kind of sad so many cuemakers are talked about behind their back on boards like this. I wish every cuemaker in the USA would just double thier prices. This will separate the men from the boys. It will also seperate the real collectors from the wannabes. Hell, it might even make some pool players get real jobs.

I'm glad that you are happy with your jump/break. It was a beauty !!

tell me...why can this guy charge SO much for his cues? yeah...he makes a nice cue, but so do alot of other cue-makers who don't get as much. even used ones fetch top dollar! what is it, like $375 for a b/j now? I contacted sean from "cueaddicts" a few days ago about the purple heart cue they have had of his since 3/05, and he says that $970 is the best they could do. I know the weight is 18.9oz, but that's pretty close to 19 which is what I use anyways. I know the guy has made cues since 89', but his prices are almost up there with scruggs who's been doing this alot longer. I just can't believe his cues are worth that much. I guess I should have kept the one I sold to SkippyFL, as I can't see spending that much money on a cue. when I bought it, I paid $775 I guess...which is alot of money there. no inlays, just 4 points, and a couple trim rings. this baffles me

Supply and Demand. Andy builds a super sweet hitting cue and he can only make so many per year. Hence the dealers have the supply locked up and can charge whatever the market will bear.

Andy himself is not the one charging the high prices. His list prices are quite reasonable last time I checked.

If you want one then order it from Andy and be prepared to wait a while. Then it won't cost as much.

John

Andy's cues are among the best value for the money out there.

How can I put this somewhat politely - for somebody to question the pricing of his cues in a manner such as this demonstrates that they are out of touch with reality.

I don't understand why you think this is such a high price for a Gilbert cue with a leather wrap, ivory joint and Schick-like pin. To me the price seems low. If it was just a 4 point cue with no extras I'd maybe see your point.

I agree with your view here Worm. There was recently a very nice new pointed Gilbert cue for sale here with some inlay work. I couldn't believe the cue was like $950.00 shipping included. It would have been 2K+ from a top maker and maybe a few hundred less from several near the top makers. My hat is off to Andy for being able to hold the line on his pricing. The cost of living must be low out there in Clover, MO!

Hello, I suspect your knowledge of quality work may need some help. Mr. Gilbert's cues are expensive because of the quality workmanship that is put into his cues. Mr. Gilbert's cue are hand made not CNC wonders that are currently flooding the custom cue market. Mr Gilbert's Veneers in his cut point cues are tight, sharp, and as clean as can be done by hand. Mr.Gilbert's finishes are also top of the line, and equal to or better than other cue maker around today. His inlays are as tight as possible and glue lines on his cue are almost invisible. These are the reasons that I also think his cues are under valued today.

Hey Jeff,

Nice talking with you this weekend. This is a very perplexing post, though.

Even after a few price increases in the last 3 years, Andy's cues are nowhere near the likes of Scruggs or Mottey (let's say as examples). His cues are basically right at half their cost. Andy has paid his dues as a cuemaker and is still underpriced IMO.

Sean

Thank you! I was beginning to wonder when someone was going to point out that getting the cue in question (purpleheart, ivory joint, ivory hoppe ring) from Tim Scruggs would cost close to double the price of Andy Gilbert (literally). Why are you complaining duke? Under a grand for a cue like that is NOT out of line in any way. Its a really good deal.
