In regard to the Hustler's TV reality show...

In our opinion, due to the no class attitudes and anger of a few pool players currently being displayed in the Billiards community of late, it's hurting the sport and is also probably keeping the general public who might be newcomers to the game away from various pool halls and probably even effecting sales of billiard equipment as well. No one in their right mind wants to bring their respective families like their wife and children into an aggressive atmosphere. Yes, I said sport, like in sportsmanship. What ever happen to the good ol days when pool players could keep their cool, win or lose, showing some class or when one could bring their family down on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy a family game or two together without hearing the F word and arguments every second buzzing around them or someone smashing or throwing their cue around. Sadly, we won't be seeing any more suits, ties, and suspenders at the pool tables in the future any time soon.

Obviously we would all like to see more billiards and pool on TV and we realize it's just a television reality show. But is it sending the right message for the future of pool to the game we all love ?

They're propping the show up against the old, stereotypical, seedy image of pool halls. I mean they named the series The Hustlers. You can't expect a wholesome show with a name like that. Either the seedy image of pool is good for the sport or it isn't. I think TruTv is just a business trying to make a buck. They're doing what will put eyeballs in front of sponsor commercials and I doubt they really care about pool one way or the other. Sorry, I'm rambling.

Pool Clubs changing attitudes

Im not even interested in watching the show because of a lot of what you just mentioned but there is a positive force just emerging on the pool scene. There is a new social media website for groups at Meetup.com

If people would form Pool Clubs out of their home rooms this is a new and proven way to start something positive in pool. JoeyA on this forum started one last January and has picked up 90 new people to pool from it.

They have a group that meets regularly and they have become social with one another and do things.

Pool is what we make it and this is a way for the demonstrated leaders in the various areas to step forward, create a group and tailor it to how they think things should be.

What would be wrong with having a dress up night where people come in as ladies and gents like back in the 30's and 40's and play. That would get a lot of media attention and its something that would be good coming from the people of pool.

Pool is about the quality of the people playing it and when we demonstrate we have no quality, we cannot move forward.

(snip)

. What ever happen to the good ol days when pool players could keep their cool, win or lose,

(snip)?

That's a myth, there were no such good ol days.

I understand what you're saying but such things have happened and will continue to happen as long as players (in ANY sport) win and lose.

The most any one of us can do is to personally stay away from such behaviors so at least one less problem is had and maybe be an example for others to behave more civilly, too.

fwiw,

I don't understand. This is one of those reality shows, right? Well, isn't it real?
I don't want to say I told you so, but I told you so. This show was contrived to accommodate all the sheeple out there who go from one social media event to the next, hanging on every word the Kardashians might say. Their choice of entertainment has no relevance to what goes on in my pool room, nor will it have any long term impact. As a matter of fact, no one there has yet to mention whether they've even seen the thing. We're still into Gunsmoke re-runs.

I can think of only a few things the public would find more boring than what really goes on in a pool room. Watching paint dry would be more exciting.

The sad truth is that if this show fails to gain an audience, it will be because it's got too much pool and not enough drama.

you mean your pool hall isn't running the show?

Well said, There's always a knock on anything I've seen related to pool.
Take the finals of The U.S. Open. It was stellar play and people picked it apart and focused on Barry. BB had a hate crowd as does the MC
What's hard for me to believe is one stroke hasn't made his way to this thread yet
Right up his alley

They won't make pool a sport. TV won't show tournaments. 99.9% don't know who SVB is. The push should be to get casinos here or abroad to take bets on pool tournaments put on in their venue. Even the gentlemen that play the game bet at least the time. Pool is what it is...for gambling. Johnnyt

maybe it's different down in Myrtle. is your hall streaming The Hustlers?

up here in Greensboro, they weren't in 2 of 4 halls that we know of. so we told the owners. and still nothing.
i want it to succeed, but i can't break the pool hall owners' wrists. it is, what it is.

as for the Open & MC - catch up on our involvement in promoting both, as well as our out-of-pocket expenses.

and don't ever put me in the same sentence as ONESTROKE.

i'm sorry i misinterpreted your post. thank you.

so what are your poll stats in Myrtle regarding this show? are the halls airing it? are your friends into it? is there chatter amongst fellow players? or is everyone too busy playing pool instead?

i know this past FRI isn't representative, due to the PPV for Frost/Alex & the Open, but it's been airing for a month now & you're down at Myrtle which is a huge tourist area.

This is reality tv. The producers want to see this kind of behavior. This is what sells today in America.
Did you notice how Jennifer handled the poor behavior of Calahan? She is a class act. Jenn is what we need to represent the pool world. A good player. A very attractive women. Terrific personality.

The two episodes of The Hustlers I watched seemed to be real enough in that they contained behavior I've seen at pool halls since 1966, so in that sense it is reality TV. However, I never saw a female in pool halls much at all, nor any who could run a three-pack, until sometime after the late seventies.

Just like the show, I have seen guys get hot and raise their voices over winning or losing a game, match or bet, or threaten someone over a railbird's comments. I've seen woofing turn serious and nearly come to fisticuffs, and that recently, between a former champion and a shortstop.

So far The Hustlers have shown much of what I know happens at pool halls. But so far I have not seen any drug use or drug sales, or any loud rap or Hispanic music, or even once instance of someone playing of "Free Bird" two or three times in a row, thank goodness. I also have not seen anyone doing any actual hustling, despite the show's name.

As for "Jenn is what we need to represent the pool world. A good player. A very attractive women. Terrific personality." That quote opens a whole can of worms. In real life, good pool players, male and female, come in all sizes, all sexual orientations, and all personalities. If we want only to see attractive ladies, there are better TV shows than The Hustlers, I think - maybe 'Friends' re-runs or 'The Brady Bunch' or for us real old folks 'The Donna Reed Show'?.

Hell no, and they won't. Who would watch this drivel. What could pool players possibly gain by seeing this unreality nonsense.
If this is the direction your world has gone in Pink, I don't want any part of it. None of us wear Yoga pants. :(

Wanted Dead or Alive.....
Just sayin....

I can't get through an episode without falling asleep. All the characters are irritating,
except for Mr. and Mrs. Barretta. The music also is irritating.

I'm a huge poolaholic, like everyone else on the forum, but there's no entertainment or education factor to keep me interested.

Hollywood should produce another COM with Vince after ahh 30 years of Hustling ..

It would be sweet to see some new Hot Babes wielding New Shtick and driving Fast cars .

I'm from South Dakota (don't live there anymore) I was back visiting. Played pool at this one place with these guys who play in a city league. I asked them if Shane's success had given people more pool interest in the state.

I said to them "you do know he's one of if not the best player in the US plays pool all over most of the world" they had no idea who he was.
