Annoying habits of the pros

So, my peeve is after a missed shot, missed position the shooter saying "REALLY" as a question. Uhg.

Do you really think so? Paul Newman won an Academy Award for his performance ....

God loved Paul Newman - he could have played a tree in any movie and at very least been nominated for best actor. The Movie, didn't even get nominated because outside of the pool world, people didn't like it. Marty didn't get a nomination, Cruise - dudes went to the pool halls because they wanted to be like him. They thought spinning the effing cue would pick up women. The pool boom didn't have ship to do with movie itself. BUT I digress, we love pool. Our ballot is tooo short to select.

That's right, the story that ended up being read by 2.3 million people.....goes like this:

IT HAPPENED IN PITTSBURGH in 1986, back when The Color of Money, a movie about a young pool shark, had hit theaters and Carson “CJ” Wiley was himself hustling pool on the road—back when, on a moment’s notice, he would drive hundreds of miles to some backwoods dive on a trip that someone with wads of cash gambled big-time there.

On that particular night, Wiley wore fake glasses and assumed one of three aliases, Mike from Indiana. His mark was the owner of a restaurant, a bearded man with receding jet-black hair who led him up a dark staircase to a private pool table on the second floor.

“And the guy is smiling this real goofy smile,” Wiley recalls today, chuckling hard before dragging deeply on a Marlboro Light. “’It’s just like in the movie,’ he says. ‘You saw the movie right?’

And I nod my head but don’t really say anything. Then he says, ‘Oh, boy, I love action. I love playing pool for money. I even love betting on other players. You saw the movie right?’ And I nod again. And we begin playing some nine ball, and I find out right away that this guy can’t play at all. I mean, not a lick.

So after I’m done beating him for a few hundred, he has me play nearly everybody in the building. I end up beating his bartender, his cook, his dishwasher, five locals, and finally, the best player in town—and he staked every one of them. By the time he quit, I had him stuck for about seven thousand dollars. And he says to me, not smiling anymore,

‘You know kid, you played a lot better at the end than you did at the beginning.’ And I look him square in the eyes and say, ‘Well, you saw the movie, right?’

Glad you spotted my little joke, C.J. :)

How about when you beat them in a tournament and they get mad and start hollering ' bout how 'you got the 7 if you wanna bet something...

(And then you respond with 'you got $200,000, if you wanna compare fed tax filings for the last 5 years!')

And speaking of ladies.....there were thousands and thousands of attractive women

Yes, indeed, I was on the road full time when 'The Color of Money' was released. They filmed much of it in Chicago and I was playing in Detroit at the time. Grady urged me to go try to get in the movie, but I was making WAY too much money by being unknown at the time. It would have been fun to be in it, but looking back I did the right thing by staying away.

It was really cool to be right in the middle of the "pool boom," as it was happening (as a result of the movie) - virtually over night I saw all the "Tom Cruise wanna be's" come out of the wood work to spin cues and show off for the ladies.

And speaking of ladies.....there were thousands and thousands of attractive women suddenly believing that pool was cool.....and pool players were mysterious and sexy......wow, talk about paradise for a couple of years. :D

This lasted about 7-8 years and started tapering off around 94 and was completely phased out by 2000....with nothing to retain the momentum pool slowly but surely died off ....until now it looks like it will get another boost with some reality shows and professional producers getting involved........I'm looking forward to the next "boom," who knows what it will bring this time. Lanny Bassham teaches three phase to every shot. Basically PSR, execution, and reinforcement. How you reinforce each shot plays a big part on your self image. What the amatures do is beat themselves up after a missed shot or agonize over it. A pro will simply picture what it feels like to hit the shot right sometimes even going through the motions.

This is not just in pool, watch the guys in the NBA when they have two free throws if they miss the first one, you will see them go through the motions and make the shot in their minds. Of course if it is the second shot they won't have time to do this but pay attention to their first shot.

Here Lanny explains the process of reinforcement.http://mentalmanagement.blogspot.com/2009/01/evaluating-your-shots-lanny-bassham.html?m=1

What a great article! Thanks for posting super cool resource.
