Another Bad Example

Here's another pitiful example of how bad I am nowadays. I had just finished watching the ballgame so I went downstairs to break some racks.

The first diagram shows the three balls that I had left.
The second diagram shows where I was at after pocketing the 7-Ball.
The third diagram shows where I ended up after making the 8-Ball.

After I pocketed the 7B I ended up with a very slight angle on the 8B as you can see in the second diagram. I couldn't draw back without the risk of hitting the 9B. So I stretched and hit the 8B with high english. The CB just died coming off the rail and ended up well short as you can see in the 3rd diagram. I missed the cut into the side. I know I hit that CB with high english but it just died coming off the rail.

Another pitiful botched runout.

There's your problem. You're too straight on the 8. The ball probably gathered up only enough momentum to nose hump the rubber.

Did you actually draw the cue ball back? Stop shot on the 7-ball drifting down the tangent line so that the cue ball is parallel with the 8-ball, then you can naturally go two rails for the leave on the 9-ball

Also, you can afford to over draw on the 7. It will bring you back where you started, can throw some bottom-left to or a skid-shot to kill the cue anywhere behind the 9.

When I pocketed the 7B I had a slight angle so I followed to the rail and back out. If I would have stopped one inch shorter than where I ended up or went one inch further where I ended up it would have been alot easier.

I seem to always be about an inch or so out of position and make things tough. This has plagued me for years. That one stinking inch.

The follow woulda worked if you hit smoother - 9:30 ish 5-8 mm from center for 2 rails. I suppose 1 rail too but again smoother. Gotta put speed on the ball,

I don't see the big deal. Come up short, laugh to yourself, shoot the nine in the side, re rack, never think about it again.

Also, there's a reason pitchers have a bullpen. They don't just walk out to the mound cold and see what happens 🤣

Have you reset the situation and played them out various ways? Or just variation in mechanics with the same target . My target for the cueball is of variable size. A softball size was what I observed Cole execution of perfection to that target playing 1 pocket at a thousand per game. Straight pool Master Ray Martin playing 9 ball was educational. His short precise patterns were works of art. Pin point precision in the strike to the white is what I practice practice practice. Shrug 🤷‍♂️

Don't be too hard on yourself. Shortstops have a wide variation in their game. Homer's one day strikeouts the next. I have heard of baseball players toiling for years in the minor leagues never making it to the majors. Their passion drove them to compete. So enjoy the successes you'll have and try to minimize your failures.

I like the advice of just playing a stop shot on the 7 and leaving enough angle for a relatively easy high outside shot, coming around two rails for the 9 in the same pocket.

Given that you left the angle that you did on the 8 and admitting that I’m more comfortable with inside spin than most, I would’ve gone high inside around two cushions controlling my speed, for a nice shot on the 9 in the other corner. Of course your speed control has to be good on this shot.

He is the 7 ball, the break, and 2 on the wire to 5 away from being a shortstop.

It would be so nice to see videos of you playing, I tried to film you at a tournament, but I think you saw me and evil eyed me.

That's how it is for everyone. Damn balls.

Move your next spot 3" over and leave your entire zone/ margin of error on the correct side of the next ball!

There is rarely one position for a shot to be a 'good one's.
