I just picked up my best find of 09 today. I was looking for another saw for my fullsplice jig and came across this on craigslist for $175. It is in fantastic shape and still has the original blade on it with all the lettering still on it. Also came with the fence and cross slide owners manual ect... I thought it was a typo but I called anyway and the guy said he bought it and realized he needed a saw he could move around easier so he went and bought another contractors saw with castors. Since he used this one a couple times he could not return it so he stuck it in a corner of the shop but he needs the space and just wanted it gone. It was worth waking up today.:grin:

Gloat?

Do I sense a tool "Gloat" here? I'm jealous!

As an aside, how important do you feel it is to get a higher-end table saw for saw tapering machines?

Beau. Maybe a little gloating:D . No I am just happy and no one around here cares about the machines.
As for the saw question, Yes. The jet saw made my machine cut much better. The blade regrind also made a substantial improvement. The higher end saws have larger motors and larger/longer arbors for the blade as well as larger bearings. They just run more true without alot of vibration. Cheaper saws that I have owned have small high speed motors that are geared down in the belt system, they are really wound up and there is not much mass to the parts plus cheap bearings all add up to create vibration. I think it is just a case of you get what you pay for.
I personally will not buy a saw that is less than $600 any more (new price that is) After seeing how smooth and quiet a good saw is you will never want to go back. I spent alot of time looking at the drive systems of cabinet saws and hybrid saws. I decided the hybrid would be fine for my machine as the bearing sizes and shaft size were about the same. I do not need the extra HP the bigger saws have. The real benifit to the cabinet saws is in the piviot assembly. They are more true and beefier but for a saw machine it is never moved so I did not see the need to go higher priced. My jet was around $600 or so and it has been fantastic! If you lay small items on the table while cutting they do not move at all. On the cheaper saws they would dance around like a cell phone on vibrate. One other thing I noticed is the fit of the blade on the arbor. on better saws it fits snug with no percieveable movement up and down. The finish looks polished. On my old saw and cheaper saw the blade will move several thousandts and the machining is rough looking in comparison. I would say a hybrid jet or delta is all that is really needed. The cabinet saws are nice but I believe the cost being double would not be justified for a saw machine.
The blades I had ground to a 2000grit finish and they to made a huge diffrence. The cut is so smooth and there is never any chatter in the center of shafts. Everyone I have handed a shaft to after the final pass says the same thing "damn, i have got to get one of these".

Not to hijack, but, 2 days ago I scored a like new 6" MasterCraft jointer for $40.
That looks like a very sturdy rip fence Joey.
 
Hyjack away. I always like to hear about great deals. I just scored 2 sets of 50 inch linear rails and bearings today on ebay for $320. 4 rails and 8 trucks. My new shaft machine will be coming together sooner than planned.

50 inches? Lock close to 20" on the saw top then 30" out?

I got that THK on a deal too. It'll my x on my router taper machine.

The shafts will be stationary and the blades will travel 36 inches. Just in case I want to make a rediculous cue. That leaves enough room for the z axis plate to have the mounts spread out some for stability. I know one guy in town is 6ft8inches tall and he could really use a 70 inch cue. I just figured I might as well build in a little extra legenth just in case I ever need it. Chris.
