I have this new leather case nearly finished. It's a 2b4s, Med Brown Stain, 2 pockets, brass hardware. This case will be done in a week or so. If anyone is interested, I'll throw in a shoulder pad with your initial's on it. $325 shipped to lower 48. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Sorry for the towel in the middle pic, I didn't want to scratch the case when I leaned it on the wall trying to get the photo.

Nice work, but looks very similar to a justis.
why, because it has tooling and squared off ended pockets? I see MANY differences....

Nice work, btw!! I'd like to see some interior shots, though..

Thanks for the comments, Roscoe... ; )

The interior isn't done yet on the brown one. It will be sewn fabric sleeves. The interior is lined with high density 4lb foam. It looks like this...

Here's another i finished last week... 2b4s, White and black chrome tanned leather, 2 pockets, nickel hardware. This one is sold.

Looks pretty good! I'm curious as to your construction techniques... is it a PVC shell? I can't get a good idea of the inside of the lid, but I believe a soft leather would look much better than the foam... If that's what it is, I think that gives it a bit of a cheaper look/feel.

edit - if you're not done with it, my apologies!!

Oh, if it makes sense, RLTW... ;)

I am not saying that looking like a justis is a bad thing. I was just simply commenting that at a quick glance I would mistake it for a justis, as many others probably would also.

Once again NICE WORK.

Thanks for all the comments.

Ask Blackheart...I sent his out last week... ; )

The interior is very high density foam, not like a sofa cushion. The cases are not rock hard like an Instroke, since they use metal (or a very high density plastic) tubes and back the leather with chipboard/cardboard (very thin leather I might add). My leather is 8oz saddle Grade A saddle leather (nearly 1/8" thick). Super stiff, but the foam add rigidity and additional protection. The 2x4s come in under 4lbs. A 3x6 is about 5 lbs. 1b2s, once I finish the design, probably around 2.5-3 lbs for the case.

No problem...Yeah, the pockets are similiar. But there are only so many ways to attach pockets. If I riveted them someone would say the cases looked like a Dennis Swift, or a Jay Flowers. It's basically the easiest way to build a pocket. Oh well.... necessity is the mother of invention. I could never afford to buy a $500 cue case, so I decided to design and make one. I tried not to blatantly copy another casemaker... but I have my own ways of doing things...people liked the case...so I made more, sold two or three. I about up to my 12th case. I have about 6 more in the works right now.

It's the tooling pattern that's really similar to an older Justis. Maybe you should refine some of your designs and develop your "easy to spot" calling card pattern that separates your work from others. Here's a page I did on tooled cases - so you can see some of the different patterns being used:

By the way, I actually asked Jay Flowers about his tooling right before he passed away. When he was in full swing he actually had an engraving plate made up and a press. He pressed some of the larger patterns, like the basket weave.

One other thing, I've always like Joe Porper's design and technique on the leather cases he used to make. They all had a unique leather carving on them. He had some with cards, like a poker hand, that were pretty cool looking.

Here it is:

You're leather work is out standing. Did you pick this up on your own or do you have prior experience? The harness colored case is beautiful.

Rangercap,

Can you post pics of the various leather colors you offer?

For us laymen how does "8oz" leather compare to material used by JUSTIS, MURNAK and INSTROKE?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, as I do more, I am sure to expand on my stamping creativity...I only have a handful of stamsp right now, but hopefully I'll start a carved one sometime with some leaves/flowers...etc on it. I wish I could get stamps done, but they are out of sight price wise. Maybe If I made a load of cases, but I like making them one at a time.

I have been to you sight a bunch of times! Nice work...

Basically leather is about 1/64" per oz/sq ft. So 8 oz is 8/64", or 1/8".

Most of the cases I have seen, including my wife's instroke use 1 1/2 to 2oz leather. Basically its glove leather, thin stuff and not very stiff. It is backed by a substrate, usually a cardboard/chipboard material. I fixed a Bentley for a friend (actually how I got started) and was a P.O.S. case. Leather, yes, but wafer thin... I mean the cardboard was thicker than the leather.. and he paid close to $150 for the case. I don't use a substrate to beef up the leather.

I have never seen any of the other cases in person, but I believe that Justis uses 8oz or heavier leather. Basically it is the same stuff you would use to make nice belts. Not fancy froo-froo belts, but a good leather belt with a buckle the size of a pie pan...lol

Colors? Any really... Blue, navy, red, oxblood, cordovan...etcI can get about 30 different colors, plus mixing, really anything is possible. I dye everything myself. Looks like this when I start.. mind you a side is 24-26 sq ft, I cut all my leather, too...

Just started by fixing things here and there. I always wanted a pro case, but I made wooden ones for a while. Here is the link. I repaired for a case for a friend first, and then have taken in more repairs... straps, zippers, new tube sleeves, twit locks...etc... All self taught. I find it amazing how many people have a great cue, and a case that is falling apart...

I haven't seen the big question yet. How much for the first one you posted pics of? Very nice, and look to be structurally sound as well. Curious minds are out here awaiting an answer. Thanks.
