Another pool hall going under

Hey RJ, Something I have never been able to get my mind around is comparing the cost of a round of golf to pool time. When I was living in Chapel Hill NC we routinely played rounds of golf at super courses for $35 - $45 a round including the cart! It seems to me that the costs of maintaining a golf course must be much higher than a pool hall. So I've never been able to get around the comperable costs for a round of golf compared to playing pool for say four hours. Just puzzles me that the pool halls don't make it but the golf courses do.. Guess you can fit more people on a golf course!!!

I can say that it really is sad that all of these pool halls are closing down.

Unfortunately, more times than not this is a result of owners not adapting to the times and trying to feed a niche.

I witnessed a few pool halls here in NJ close down due to mismanagement of money, poor promotion, drugs, etc.

In order for some of these pool halls to survive, they'll have to change their ways and please the general population. It sucks for the purists, but these are different times.

billiard/pool places close. ok.

market opens.

who wants to open a new room in chicago area?

pm me

I am sad to hear this. I live in manhattan, and have always wanted to go there to play. I've heard good things about the place. I have three little kids and a busy schedule, so most of my pool time comes at home now. I always wanted to check out their tournaments though. Maybe I will get there before they close. I hate seeing this happen to local people.

Hooray Smoking Ban!

I just wanted to say how nice it is to go to a place and shoot pool without my eyes burning, clothes smelling like an ashtray, and oh yea, not getting so much cancer from all the second hand smoke is nice too!

Now how do you get the smokers to have a little consideration and not smoke directly next to the door so everyone has to pass through their haze to come and go? And don't litter the place up with the butts either, its nasty!

Flame suit on.

Hmmm

Dan, yes, strange indeed. It's gotta cost a fortune to not only buy the land but also construct the course, build the clubhouse, and then maintain the entire course day in and day out that requires numerous folks, time, and expense. What is the mortgage on something like this??

But, there are tee off times for a reason. Because they have people literally standing in line to play golf. I work for a large company in Schaumburg, and I could find a golf partner anytime I wanted, 7 days a week, regardless of the course or the price. I only know 3 folks at my company that play in a pool league. These guys will burn a vacation days to play golf, and usually do numerous times during the summer.

Finding someone to shoot pool afterwork would be next to impossible. I could not swing a dead cat around any floor at work without hitting a person who plays golf. They might be duffers, but they spend lots of cash on clubs, tee times, shoes, etc. They talk about, they read about and they watch. I don't play the game, but these guys seem pretty pumped about it. Heck, even most pro pool players play a lot of golf !! I believe it even hurt one pro players game of pool spending so much time on the course!!

see ya, RJ

Just another quick point about the pool loft. After the smoking ban, even the trust fund kids stopped going there. Money wasn't an issue to them. They liked bringing their friends, smoking, and playing cheap sets. The ban may not be the total cause for these places going under but they played a large role. The loft has the absolute cleanest GCs around and great deals on time. I've started playing again and bringing action with me in hopes of keeping the place open as long as possible. I hope other customers from the past do as well.

what night do you go there.... whats your game???

I don't have a set schedule. I base my trips to the loft on when my opponents can make it up there and when my wife's not making dinner that I had better darn well not skip! We've probably never met because I haven't played in a couple years -but I was a regular there. I play mostly 9 ball these days. I like straight pool as well and played many marathon matched against Ernie years ago. I don't play him anymore because I would feel bad about taking his money -if I won. With that guilt on my mind, I would lose every game. I've been playing again for almost two months and am back to about 70% of what I was so it's coming back to me slowly but surely. I was never a champion so I'm probably one step above an egg now!
I'll play most every game except banks and one pocket. How about you? You only there on Wednesdays? I may swing in there later tonight but I will be there for sure Friday and/or Sunday night.

Wednesdays only.. falls in line with my nights off.. i used to play 9 ball mainly... but now straight is my game .. i still play 8 , 9... ill play banks i haven't played 1 pocket in probably 10 years but would give it a whirl..

A few weeks ago Ernie and I spent a couple hours making one pocket look incredibly difficult. It took months for me to find the patience to play straight pool back in the day. I don't know if I could ever have the patience to play one pocket.
How do you match up with Ernie in straight pool? Any spot for either of you? To what do you race, and for how much? You up or down?
