Another tip...

You may be right, and you might not be, too. But PLEASE leave the NPR stuff out of these threads.

We have the great John Brumback here, trying to answer peoples questions about pool, and you wanna derail the thread into more political crap?

Cut it out. There are plenty of threads in NPR where you can argue all you want.

Sorry, John. It shouldn't be like this. Thanks for taking the time, and hopefully you'll have patience enough to wait out this foolishness.

And do you ever add anything pool related? You welcome, chastise, agree, nod, support and comment on who should do what.

Anything pool related?

336Robin:

This was the "revolutionized my bank game" thing that I mentioned in another post that John's DVD did for me. I used to use spin "all the time" for banks, thinking it was helping me. With one pocket, I was able to get away with that, because as long as I carefully controlled where the cue ball went, the disaster-impact of a miss (or hanging the ball up in the hole) wasn't as bad as full-bore bank pool.

John's DVD shows you how to change the reflection angle of the bank to make it more perpendicular to the pocket -- taking as much advantage of that pocket's aperture as possible. Using no spin on the cue ball, cutting the object ball as much as you can, and using the CIT of the hit + a very firm stroke helps achieve that change in the reflection angle.

Definitely recommend John's DVD -- he covers a lot more than what I hors d'oeuvre'ed you with. ;)

Ah, THAT dvd. I wonder...

Anyway, that's the first tip from that dvd I've seen shared on here (and I didn't understand it). I seem to remember the price being irrelvant, given how generous everyone is around here, and so willing to share content with the group.

Just saying...

Feel free to share whatever you know.

This isn't a banking forum. Most people want to talk about tips, league, cue makers(or non-makers) and other things most of the time. If you're feeling slighted because nobody went out of their way to provide you with free information from a DVD on banking, post about it in NPR. Heck, I've brought up banking before and it's gotten very little attention.

I don't like to argue either.

Price is irrelevant, mooching is not.

Edit: I've had the DVD for a while. I just finally saw the light on one of the banking tips the other day. Had been trying to overdo it for years. Definitely worth it.

You know fully well that I cannot add anything to a thread giving helpful suggestions to pool players, as I'm not very good nor very experienced. What I do add is to try and further the conversation along, and to ask questions to those who can help.

I don't arrive in a thread to derail it.

You and I can dance in any number of threads, and that can be mildly entertaining. This thread isn't the place for it.

again John, your participation here is appreciated by many more than the few that can't let the thread happen. I'm enjoying your responses, and plan on working on what you suggest.

Glad you, and the handful of people who actually bought it, could afford it.

Its as good a place to discuss this as any other. All you do is chastise or shill mediocrity. What is the point of doing either?

If you had saved up a dollar a month since you first began complaining about the cost, you could've had it a long time ago. Heck, you could have gone halvesies with a "friend" and saved up half of that. Likewise, if you aren't willing to buy the DVD because of its "high cost", you sure as heck aren't going to spend what it would take to incorporate the information into anything useful.

You want to complain more than you want to learn. Done with you.

He doesn't have to learn -- he's a Brit, after all, and this implies cueing superiority by default. We are here to learn from him, not vice-versa. But alas, he's done trying. ":("

Get it straight, Banks. :p

Go away, shouldn't you be stalking John Barton or something.

I only stalk gobshites and bullshitters. Talking of which, shouldn't you be telling us how brilliant you are? Haven't seen anything like that from you for, oh, at least 5 minutes.

Still, congrats on finally working out how to use the signature function. Constantly writing about chicken must have been as tiresome to write as it was to read.

Lol. What on earth can americans teach the British about cueing?

You may give us the benefit of greater experience of banking, but we're not going to pay 50 bills for it any time soon.

In the beginning of learning a skill, KISS rules.

The problem with teaching spin/english right out of the chute is that you'll end up with a player that knows nothing except that "left english on the cue ball helps cut the object ball right, and right english on the cue ball helps cut the object ball left." They start to depend on it for their cut shots rather than knowing the proper cut angle -- which is not a good thing. Better to learn how a center-axis hit works, first; then later, after proficiency with this has been demonstrated, go into spin/english.

IMHO,

Exactly right. Plenty of potentially excellent players get virtually addicted to english and diminish the skill set they might have otherwise acquired.

One sage observation about acquiring skills in any endeavor says: "Your strengths define your potential . . . your weaknesses determine the actual result."

I've seen a lot of people hit a baseball. I doubt many of them could run a marathon.

When Dean Karnazes has to hit a ball accurately let me know.

I will save you the trouble. Dean ran 50 Marathons in 50 states in one year.

He may have been carrying a baseball bat or pool cue in his pants, check it out, look real close, look for the tip...... and get back to me.

I will be sitting by the phone waiting for your call, staring at it with anticipation.

Perhaps if you weren't such a loser, you could afford a copy. Given the content, I thought it was rather cheap frankly. Maybe we could pass the hat here for you dude, see if we could collect enough to buy the dvd for you. Given your incredible contributions and popularity here, shouldn't be a problem.
