I play a little every week or two - a friend has a heated Verhoeven. I use one of their billiards cues, a Sang Lee signature model made by lord knows who. I'm terrible, I only play because I'm forced to, everyone else (hardcore professional-level pool players) are just EXCITED by the newness of the challenge.

In my very first game I had an extended lesson from SJM, then I and a partner beat SJM and his partner (a very famous pro) 2 short games in a row (we won't mention that I was receiving 2 points per billiard, and that he missed about 20 billiards by a micron on the then un-heated table, and that I had coaching on every shot - I missed a run of 3 by a micron). Probably the last billiards game I will ever win (the players here are getting serious about the game, while I still find myself looking for the pockets).

We don't have any 3 cushion tables around here, I've never played it, but I'd like to try. I've played British billiards on a 12 foot snooker table and really enjoyed it.

This might be a silly question, but why do they heat the tables?

:( Was starting to learn and getting serious - when Brunswick 5x10 table was remove (lack of business). Other Pool Hall burnt down. Closeness Carom Table 100 mis. Was using a Karomi Cue. Friend Todd Elkins (Parrot Cue) made me a custom carom cue. One day hope to get a Dieckman Cue for their natural balance and playablity. Presently have a Dieckman Pool Cue and Masse Cue.

Hey Bob

i'm sure you don't remember me, but my GF and i met you in vegas at the CC Memorial Tournament in 1999. i started playing in '97 and was hooked, in `99 that was our first REAL experience in the world of 3C. That event during our vacation was GREAT!

we saw everyone! AWESOME! i got my helmstetter from there too. best 2 pieces of wood ever. IMO. Semih is truly the showman.

one last thing, `THANKS BOB` for putting that together. we love 3C.

n_den :)

what is three cushion anyway? do you have to pot every ball going off three cushions. I potted the eight like that the other night. That does count?

I love billiards but I have to drive 40-60 miles to play on a heated table so I usually play on an old Brunswick with crappy rails. Add in the fact that I play people who don't play for $$ but try and leave you safe every shot and its a bit of a grind to play serious billiards where I'm at. The worst part is I own 50tapes of pros playing 3-C but the table I play on is no where near good enough to hit shots the same way you see them on tape. Its like a different game.

Heated Verhoevens with new cloth and clean balls and you're in billiard heaven. A pool hall in SF bought some Gabriel tables so I might have to check out the hall (Billiard Palacade in the Mission)

I use a Schuler and so do most of the 3-C players I know. My shaft is a regular pool taper though, which isn't really what you want for billiards. A 12 mm tip is what pros use but their shaft taper is a lot different than a pool shaft, so your 12 mm shaft will be almost useless on a slow billiards table (if its whippy) Danny 314.

I usually play about five hours of 3-C a week. I run a five almost every day but rarely run 6's or 7's (maybe once a month) . Must be a mental thing.

Too bad Allen Gilbert lives in Southern Cal instead of Norcal- he definitely knows his stuff. Up north, An Egyptian player plays out of a Elks lodge in Vallejo and he's a great player. Took 7th in the nationals this year. If I had any brains, I'd try and get him to help me out.

I think guys like Blomdahl, Sanchez, Jaspers, Sayginer are just as talented as Efren, Souqet, Alex P., etc...

I'm playing every day for at least an hour if you want to call that serious.
I own an old Brunswick and also have access to 3 anothers as well as a Verhouven.

Just retired my Longoni for a Dieckman. If you don't have a carom cue I feel a good house with a good tip is an ok option. I know one former champion who uses a 13 mm tip but seems most good players are 11 - 12 mm conical or modified conical taper. Might want to still throw out that 12 mm shaft if it's a pro taper. Not enough spine for the heavy balls.
I've only seen one player in 30 years who could really play the game with a spineless shaft. He was good but the exception to the rule.

Yes there are hot spots here and there around the country but where I live there's only maybe 12 tables within 300 miles some of which aren't worth playing on and there's only about 5 or 6 players with over 500 average and only one besides myself in my home town.

Really sad for such a beautiful game.

Tables are just too costly and take up too much space. I wonder if 3 1/2 x 7 table would help 3 cushion?

I like the game but don't get to play. I started playing when I lived in Denver, but when I got into it I couldn't devote a ton of time to it, then I moved. There is a dead rail 41/2X9 about 2 hours from me. I don't get to play a whole lot. I do have a couple carom cues around just in case tho. Couple kilby butts with mostly pool shafts, btu a carom shaft too. And a schuler with a couple shafts. I should sell a couple but then I wouldn't have as many.;) I still miss the helmstetter production carom cue I sold stupidly just becuase I didn't get to play much. I think if I lived in a place with a lot of billiards that I would get hooked. but I only have room for a pool table in my house and there isn't any billiards around. Sort of sucks. I always liked the fact that the players seemed to help you in billiards. They liked the game and wanted people playing it. At least that was my experience with the Denver players.

this is another reason the game is so wonderful
the people who play it are just so great ,nice, helpful!

Played 3 Cushion from age 5-22, had some success here in Belgium, but it's hard to reach anything near Pro-level if u fancy having a career outside the sport.

Here in Belgium it's still one of the biggest sports, though snooker has caught up in popularity.

Always had the luxury of playing on great Verhoeven tables, the best there is. Great people too btw, family business.

Switched to Pool myself now, but still occasionally play it. Those who never played it won't know how great the game can be.
