any downside to this??

Got an aftermarket shaft that is correct thread for existing butt, but is a bit wobbly screwing on.

Anybody tried a bit of white teflon plumbing tape to tighten up the fit??

I don't have any tape handy to try, so I wondered if anyone had done it before me.

TIA.

if it tight when fully screwed, then you don't need to do anything.
If it's not, there is a fitting issue and it could be fixed by re-threading the shaft but if it's a cheap shaft then I wouldn't bother with it. just sell it and get a better fitting shaft.

I have coated brass pins before the install with lead free solder.
Sounds goofy but it tightened up the loose threads substantially.
It seems to have lasted well also.

I really don’t think the wobbling hurts much as long as the facing on the joint ends is correct.

The straightness of the butt-shaft combination is controlled by the flatness of the two facing surfaces; not by the orientation/tightness of the threaded member.
At best, the tightness of the non-piloted threaded member is only used to prevent runout at the joint, and prevent self disassembly.

Teflon tape can be used to tighten the threaded joint--don't be surprised if you have to put new teflon tape on rather regularly.

see above, it is tight when fully screwed together, but less than a quarter turn "loose", and there is a serious wobble between the butt and shaft. I am fearful of really cranking it too tight to avoid stripping the threads.

Sure it would work.
Be a pita unless its a home cue kept together.

Any decent cuemaker could put a new insert in the shaft for a little bit of cash

You won't strip them....its only catching the one face of the thread

doesn't sound that it fits
don't use it
