Any ideas for a substitute?

For the past year or so i've had a cue design in mind. I originally wanted the butt to be all ebony with no wrap and 10 staggered ivory points, 5 of which continue all the way down the cue to the 10 in the butt sleeve. In talking with a friend who has started making cues and a few more established cue makers i've found that an all ebony butt would be extremely heavy. One cue maker suggested using a maple butt and using an ebony shell. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for a black wood that could be used or any other ideas on it. Once again thanks for any input, i really do appreciate it.

If you want to shave weight it should be cored. I play with a all ebony cue with Ivory points running both directions, (actually spears instead of points) and 50 eneralds set into the Ivory. It is heavy, 22 OZ, but I love the soild hit you get from it. If you would like to see pictures of Ebony and Ivory, PM me with your email and i will send you some. I also have one with a Ivory handle that is breathtaking.
