Any Ideas???

One of the problems I am going to fix on my table this time around is the broken slate, (see photo). The T-rails bolt to the side of the slate and the bolts screw into what I would call a barrel nut. Well, probably someone overtightened the bolt a broke slate right out where the barrel nut goes.

I was going to stand the slate on edge and using a floor drill press drill the hole deeper and just use a longer bolt but someone has been there before me and did not drill the hole straight breaking out the slate on the botom. Well, I might attempt to drill the hole deeper but the drill is going to want to take the past of least resistance and follow the crooked hole.

I made a repair ten years ago where I mounted a piece of oak and screwed it to to the backer board on the slate then had a 3/8 course bolt going throught the oak into a t-nut. Didn't work real well always heard a thunk on that end of the rail.

Any Ideas guys? I would really appreciate some input on this.

Ok, yes, stand the slate on end, broken side up. Clamp boards on both sides of the slate flush with the edge of the slate to create a dam, close in the end of the slate as well. Make sure all the faces of the boards facing the missing slate chunk is covered with Scotch Magic tape, reason follows. Make sure you close in the end of the slate as well. Next take your barrel nut, mount the rail bolt in it, but before hand, insert the bolt through some shrink tubing. Now that you're ready, insert the barrel nut and bolt in the slate where it belongs, making sure it's standing straight up, then get you some liquid steel, can't remember where to get it from, but it's a liquid that when it drys it's as hard as rock. Pour it into your dam, up to the edges of the wood, which should be lined up with the edge of the slate. When it drys, remove the wood, and back out the rail bolt, the shrink tubing will stay in place, allowing the bolt to unscrew. I think you get what I mean, if you don't, let me know.

You may even want to use a steel tubing to run the bolt through, with maybe a 7/16" or 1/2" ID which will allow you some room for bolt movement when reinserting the rail bolt instead of shrink tubing.

Glen:)

Thank you

That is good, what a chuckle, you saw the photo  and said, GET THE COBRA!

Glen,

Thank you for the response. I get what you mean on the shrink tubing or steel tubing. Maybe, I would go with the steel and then wrap it in Saran wrap. Liquid Steel??? Seems so conventional. Maybe I am mistaken but as I recall this is found in like a toothpaste tube at most auto suply stores. Thought someone was going to suggest some German brand catalyzing three part epoxy or someting or another, so disappointing.:D:D Liquid Steel I could probably even find at Walmart but do you think this stuff would have enough grip to the slate to not break away when I torque down the rail bolt?

Tell me about red rubber cushion facings???

Calling the Cobra!

Hey Glen,

Just need your confirmation on the product you had recomended. Like to get started on this part and need to know if it is something I have to order. Is this and epoxy similar to Marinetex?

Thank you

I have had good results with these types of repairs using "J-B Weld". I would also suggest that you put a little grease on the bolt particularly arounrd the end that goes into the nut to aid in release.
