Any other pool halls charge like this?

I think i am very fortunate for the place i go to. They charge by the table, regardless of how many players there is. They honestly could make more money by the number of players. But in reality they make up for it in beer.

IMHO, If both tables are out they are going to charge you both for both tables.

Exactly what I said in post #38. It ain't the table rental that's payin' their bills, it's the alcohol and food.

The above quoted table rental sytem is gonna keep the patrons happy. Happy patrons = return customers!!!

I would have thought it common sense and a good showing of generous spirit for the owner to charge you less. I play in England and we have flat table rates regardless of how many of people are playing and or if you join someone else at a later time.

I'm not picking sides, only observing...

Does anyone else have as much friction as Wheeljack does with the room owner ?

Has anyone else that frequents that room been 'overcharged' in the same scenario ?
Wheeljack, from what I understand, the owner's new to this. You and the room owner haven't had a chance to build a rapport.

One of the biggest things about working in the customer service industry is that 'you can't take it personal'. Sometimes the line can get a little blurred.
A lot depends on the attitudes that day. You're pissed off about the principle of being overcharged, and more than likely it showed.
And the new owner's probably still learning the ropes. For a business to be successful, you basically have to forget about your personal life for the first year or so, and concentrate solely on the business. Who knows what the new room owner had to deal with 90 seconds before you cashed out.

Doesn't make it right, but it may help answer some questions...

Yes, I have had the same experience with the owner.

Poor customer service and he tried to over charge me as well on 2

occassions, but I was able to get it corrected both times. Maybe it was an honest mistake.....

Update! Resolution!

Yep , I know this thread is OLD , but some might be interested to know that the problem has been resolved! The new owners are gone , and ownership of Uncle Waldo's has reverted to it's founder and original owner ! WELCOME BACK !!

So, I go into a hall here in the Daytona Beach area last night to kill some time before going to meet friends.

Normally, I practice by myself, but last night there was a guy there that I knew when I arrived and we played together for an hour and a half. He already had a table when I got there.

So, I finish and go to pay my time and the owner charges me the single player rate. I questioned him on it and he said my friend already had his table and his time was seperate. I pressed the issue a little and the owner just shrugged his shoulders at me. Pissed me off to no end. I told him that was fine and all, but that is not the way it is normally done.

This place changed owners late last year and the old management did not charge me that way. My old pool room in KY did not charge that way.

Does anyone here have a pool room that charges like that? If I'm wrong here then I will get over it. Otherwise, that joint just lost over $100/month in my table time fees over a $4 overcharge.

Please share your thoughts-

J.

Yes I know places like that and I don't go to them. It's a ripoff. They are charging you for half the table time essentially.

I can't stomach the places that charge per player. Only ONE person can take a shot at a time so the amount of play on a table is the same for four people as it is for one person.

I used to own a ten table room and I would rather have four people playing on every table and carousing and drinking and having fun than all four paying table time and counting their pennies and avoiding my place. Or worse they take two tables or even worse each one takes their own table.

I would never charge a guy the single player rate if he jumps on a table with someone else UNLESS I had some sort of special practice rate or something that was much lower than the normal rate, kind of like sharing at a buffet. But even then I think I would make it SUPER CLEAR to everyone that this is the rule before they get on a table.

i work at a pool hall, and if that person is well known there he may just pay a straight rate of 7-10 bucks for the night, thats what we do at our hall, if you come alot, are on a team out of there, or are a friend of an employee its $9 for the night and $5 if you are an employee and on certain nights its $7 for the night...the sad thing about the 7 bucks is that people come in and complain to no end and ill end up putting them on table time and when they leave they pay at least twice what it would have been, thats if they stay more than an hour or 2.. but i think that at a normal rate of 6 an hour for a single person and 3-4 bucks per person when there is 2 or more that 7 dollars is a good deal. Idk thats just me, before i started working there, I would hold off and wait for the 3 nights that it was the 7 dollar deal, and then you get the people that just walk past the counter and go to a table that is already taken on a busy night and pull out some quarters and look for the coin insert, to their dismay when i walk up and say you need to get your own table, if there is one open, you have to pay 7 dollars. the answer is usually "well i just want to play a game" i reply ok ill put you on table time then, and it ends up being 2 hours later and over the 7 bucks.
back to the topic, if he was well known or if he is a hard hitter of some sort he may have a flat rate, but if not, i dont see why you cannot just go to the computer and just enter 2 instead of 1, but with our computers, if someone plays for an hour on table time and someone joins, there is no way to differentiate the hour the first person played, it will just tell you the total for the both of you. It will show how long player 1 and 2 were on if they came in separately but the point is, its an annoyance to add someone to a table if another has been on it for awhile. just my view point as an employee at a pool hall.

Our room charges a flat rate for the table, no matter how many are playing on it (maximum of 4 though). They also keep time by a number on the rack you are given, and you are free to take any table you want, and change tables if one opens up you like better. Much more simple compared to how it seems to be done at most places.

Same here in China. Just pay for table time no matter how many people are playing. Room keeps track by table number. When lights turn on, computer starts time. Lights off, time stops and computer generates bill. If you change tables, just turn lights off, get a bill and move to other table. Lights on and play.

If you're playing sets where loser pays table time, just have the lights turned off and turned back on again at the end of the set. Get bill for the time used and starts over. Simple, fair and works.

OUCH That is so not right

Playing in different pool rooms can be a bich if you don't know the rules or scams they come up with. Going on the road I have come across a number of arguments with pool room owners. One place I played at, I think it was Alabama, I play some guy for about two hours and two minutes. The owner charges me for three hours. He says he does not prorate. I said it is simple math, no big deal but he was an inbread dumb ass.

I think it was in Kentucky where I start playing a guy for cash and we end up playing for about six hours. There is a big sign that says Tuesday night, play all night for $8. So I go to pay and the guys says its $30 dollars. Five dollars an hour. I asked about the 8 dollar deal and he said you have to ask for that when you start playing.

WOW! Thats really messed up.

If you know a place charges like this then just take a separate table next to the table you are playing your friend. When you friend is shooting you move to the next table and practice some shots. You are each playing a single rate and he has a table.

Around here in clearwater fl. the 2 rooms I play in have different deals
room A. has a 5$ all you can play form noon till 6 pm. Then its 4$ per person per hr.

room B. has the same 5$ for the afternoon but they also have a 40$ a month all you can play any time of day. but i dont care for their tables...

It reminds me of a pool hall here in Denver that is no longer in business.
I went in one night by myself, and the table rates had changed from $4.00 per hour to $10.00 per table.
When I found out I decided to go somewhere else, then the manager told me I could play for $5.00 an hour....so I player for 2-hours.
When I went to pay, he said $20.00.
I thought he was going to charge me half, and he said "that is half".
So I paid it and never went back.

Not that I'm in any way important to the pool community in Denver, but I get along quite nicely in pool halls, and I spend and tip quite a bit.
I order food & drinks just to spend money to help support these places, and the waitresses.
Sometimes the support is not a 2-way street, but I don't let it bother me.
On the other hand, I don't think a pool hall can stay in business pissing off customers that like to spend a little.
If I owned a pool room, I would do everything possible to keep the adults happy, thus preventing it from turning into a kids place.

What is the single rate, and what is the two person rate? The pool room I own charges 1&2 players $4.50 per Hour per person. We do not charge per table. We do however charge $4.00 per hour per person for 3&4 Players on the table. The rate does not include sales tax.
