just curious

He's a bus driver here in Fargo who is joining my league team this year. He hasn't really played in a long time, but I gather he played pretty sporty a few decades ago.

Mikepage,
If you can't say something good don't say anything at all...does that ring a bell....he did have a most impressive behind the back wing shot though. Chewy was a good regional shortstop in his day. Back in the late 70's he could play but I would not have wanted to be his backer if you know what I mean. On a positive note I heard he was a likeable guy in building with no exits...LOL

Only the best player in the Dakotas for many years.

Hi Mike

This question sounds kinda familar, but anywhos, I remember Mike C. from my time up in Montana, circa the late 70's/early 80's. He was quite the player and had a pretty good exhibition "shooting" the cue ball out of his mouth and using the lining out of his luggage style cue case as a ramp for a shot from one table to another.

Of course, as a person... I also remember "going outisde" with him right in the middle of shooting an exhibition match with Frank McGowan, because he insulted a young lady I was with.

I also remember, at that same event in Missoula MT in '81, beating him in a 9ball match and his head coming close to exploding.

Mike was a fine player but a poor human being. But then again, weren't we all :-)

Hi Lou-bank-good-miss-straight-in-memory-like-an-elephant-Figueroa

Yes, Chewy came out of retirement for one league season 7 or 8 years ago, and I asked about him then over on the dark side. I recall you responded, and I also remember Grady saying Chewy once beat Ronnie Allen.

After seeing him, and seeing him after he's been drinking a bit, I figured there's got to be some good stories out there...

A lot of you players that read this forum--particularly those of you from the east coast--don't understand that bar-table 8-ball pool league here in God's fly-over country is the real deal. It's the time when all the players are out.

All the teams on Tuesday night play at the one pool hall here. That year Chewy played and a svelt Danny Basavich spent about 7 weeks here, playing in pool league every week. When Danny first came, after he'd already beaten our local shortstop for a couple dimes, Chewy played him some bar table 9-ball for $5 a rack. Chewy hadn't played in years and basically had no money. Danny knew that $5 a rack was the end of the line. For those of you who think Mr. Basavich plays slowly, you should have seen him get ahead a dozen games in half an hour to bust Chewy.

I'm too young to know anything about Chewy back in the day, but the stories are legendary. I know a lot of good players that say Chewy was the best around (Minot, ND) for a long time. Having met him once, he seemed like a nice guy for most of the night. He won the 9 ball tourny he was in, and took second in 8-ball (this was 2 years ago). I saw him play, and I would certainly take him on my team. As I understand it, Chewy quit playing pool completely when someone in his family died, and he just picked it up in ND 2 years ago when he came to Minot to play in a tourney.

Very good player to this day. But in his day I wouldn't say he was the best in the dakotas. Ie: Dick Spitzer, Dennis Haar from South Dakota to name some. I dont know many players from Nd but I would say he was one of the best.

Wing Shots

Yes I know Mike. Havent seen him for ages but he knows me and my family,Namely my daughters Gari Jo and timi Rae.I dont know how much he is playing now but he was a threat in any tournament he played in. Most of all,
Mike put on exhibitions that were sensational shooting wing shots better than anyone I have ever seen and for big finish he would put the cue ball in his mouth and blow it out to pocket an object ball, "Beat That".
I hope he reads this post and responds with a note.I'm sure he will remember me. Gary Bloomberg

Lol

Reminds me, I have seen a few guys that put a cue ball in their mouth, and then could not get it out --- Pretty funny stuff ....

Hi Mike

Played mike several times. Great player.

Early in life Mike had a drinking problem, I hope he's addressed that by now. Visited with him a few years ago and enjoyed every minute of the visit.

Should be a great addition to your team.......randyg

I see Chewy every Tuesday night because we still play on the same team, and in fact I see him on most days. He drives a bus, and has the through and around campus route where I work.

He's doing fine. He is kept thoroughly in line by a wonderful wife of 30+ years.

He usually has one beer and goes right home after league.

Two weeks ago he stayed and played me $5 9-ball on the bar table from 9:00 pm till 2:00 am. The following week he said "DID I EVER CATCH HOLY HELL FOR LAST WEEK! I'M GROUNDED FOR A DECADE!" Sorry for the caps, but it's hard to imagine quoting The Chew and not capitalizing it.

Tell Chewy "hi" from Randy Goettlicher....thanks

i googled it ...

I don't think he played better than Spitzer.

This thread musta been harvested. It's from 2006....we're just that much smarter eh? ;)

First I was trying to create a new thread to post the video link, but then i thought lets see if there is already some thread about Mike, and I got lucky to find it. I don't like creating new thread on the same information that is previously discussed on az forums.

All good, settle down, just funnin'....I think it was Very smart of U to do it this way.

i think it was 1972 when he first showed up at the stardust tournament in vegas. jansco introduced him and then said he needed a nickname. so called him choo choo. i think that name stuck for awhile. he played real good back then.

He still does play good and he loves to put on a show. He has broken out the chopsticks at least 3 times that I know of this year. I think my favorite is the town drunk.....I like the story he created for it.
