Anyone been to APA 8-Ball Nationals in Vegas?

My team is two wins away at the states in two weeks from going to Vegas. Now I know its still a long shot but stranger things have happened. We didn't even think we had a chance to make it through the locals. Anyway, for those of you that have been there, what are your thoughts on the experience? All I can find is some generic information and rules posted. What costs do the APA cover in getting there? Do you remember what it cost you and how long you were there? Did you stay right at the Riviera? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey John, in terms of the cost it really depends on several factors:

- How many teams were in the league and qualified?
- How many teams get a spot for Vegas?
- How much does the LO take out?

Every place is different. I have been for both and I got more money when we qualified as a team. They covered the cost of the flight, half price on hotel, the team registration, and a little bit of spending money (about $100 a person I think)...so keep in mind there will still most likely be costs and it is not a "free trip". It was a blast though, especially stopping by seeing a couple of the pros do exhibitions and just hanging out with friends while competing. Good luck and keep us posted if you qualify!

Normally get around 500.00 per player for expenses.Sometimes you can find a room cheaper than the Riv but it sure is handy staying there at the Riv if you are going to play in any of the Minis. My suggestion would be stay at the Riv and pay a little more and no long walks, cab rides, or bus rides. you must sign up for minis 24 hr ahead so staying there makes that easier...Good Luck and get ready to meet some Sandbaggers

One of the teams I was on made it about 10/15 years ago . We did stay at the Riviera. Our rooms where actually not ready when we got there so the hotel gave us show tickets it was (splash) back then . I thought the league paid for the rooms and we there I think a week or so I in august(hot) one of the guys started melting when we where walking around/true story. But we had to pony uip any spending money. It was fun.the difficult part of playing in a big tournament like that is your rating goes by your playing ability against your competition. So if your area is weak and you beat them up your high rated. If your area is full of stud players and youu beat each other up your rating is lower. So some teams out there seem underrated but maybe you where a big fish in a little pond . Overall experience is great to show you where you stack up in the big scheme of the pool world.

I have been Three times since 2009 and our league pretty much covered the trip there and the room we just brought money to spend. We always stay at the circus circus its right across the street and the rooms were a lot cheaper. we always stayed for about six days. I hope this all helps and if we win our LTC tournament next Saturday and Sunday I hope we see you there

APA covers nothing. Your LO will generally come up with some sort of Prize/Travel fund but is under no obligation to. Some LO's are pretty generous while others are so tight they squeak. You might check with your division rep or the LO or teams that have been there to see what the LO gives to the qualifiers. When you get there and your captain registers I think the APA gives you "Last Place Money" and that's like $300. The APA and the Rivera offers a deal if you use an APA discount code when you make your reservations. Last year the Riv offered a deal and so did Circus Circus. But man-o-man, trying to check in and out of that place when 2500 pool players are trying to do the same can ruin your whole day. Check prices off the strip, like maybe the Gold Coast or Hooters. We usually go whether we qualify or not and we'll stay on the strip but further down toward the middle of the strip. Check the web sites for the Ceaser's Entertainment Group or for Boyd and see if you can at least get on the hotel email list. They offer a deal every so often, I get emails from them about once or twice a week. The internet is full of discount codes and deal offers for Las Vegas for everything from flights to cars and hotels so if you show up or try to make reservations without any of those it's like going to a gun fight unarmed. You likely won't need a car but it is convenient to have one but the buses and the monorail is a pretty good transportation system. Free buffets at the casinos can be had if you know how or if you are in the right place at the right time... or if you complain to the right desk clerk, otherwise food and beverage on the strip can get a little pricy. There are places close to the strip, within walking distance that are excellent eatery's and much more cost effective that the strip places. All the casino now charge what they call a resort fee. That's just a way of adding and extra $20 per day to your room tab, so when you're figuring your hotel cost make sure and figure in the resort fee, but they now include internet (while in the resort). I understand the signal is better but I've always found it pretty unreliable around town.
Other than that, when you get there find a place to get a cheap beer with a hot bartender and tip them accordingly, it'll be a great time

Went in 2008. Great time. The expenses paid vary by league operator. Ours paid for tournament entry fees, hotel, and plane tickets. We stayed across the street from the Riviera at the Circus Circus. Its a family oriented hotel with things for kids to do. We arrived at night, but the tempeture was still 95 deg! But its a dry heat! Lol. During the day it was 108. Obviously you will sweat, but you clothes will never get wet. The humidity was 5 percent and it evaporates as fast as you can produce it. It was only a 4 minute walk across the street to the Riv.

A rental car would be a plus. There is so much to see and do. Cabs would end up costing more. The old strip (Freemont St) is a must to go see. Street prrformers, stores, the Gold Nugget, the l.e.d. overhead show, its all pretty cool. Even if you don't gamble, you will need extra money for tips, food(the buffet at the circus circus is very good and reasonable), sometimes vallet parking, etc. The wife and I spent 500 or 600 for the week but we set a gambling budget that was included. You can also go to a local supermarket and buy a throw away foam cooler and ice for lunch meat and such for lunch. cheaper then eating out every time.

The captains wife knew her way around Vegas well. She goes there several times a year for her work. If none of you have ever been there, study the lay of the land very carefully. At night, there is so much distraction (flashing lights, signs) its easy to miss turns or get in an accidents.

With carefull budgeting, you can get by relatively cheap and still have a good time. Enjoy the experience. I will say after a week, we were done with it, and ready to come home. The overwhelming atmosphere of Vegas wears off at that time. Would like to go back someday though.

Agreed, Las Vegas can be really cheap, or really expensive. I don't really gamble so other than the hotel it costs me almost nothing except food and drink and most of our hotel is covered by the LTC prize / travel fund. Years ago our team qualified for both 8 and 9 ball, that's entirely too long. Even 8 ball is a little too long for me anyways. I like the 9 ball tournament, you get there on a Wednesday or early Thursday, it's over a weekend, you can be back home Sunday night or Monday. A few days is probably the max for me. After the third day I don't mind so much if we lose two in a row just so you can go home. Sure I'd love to win it or be in it on the last day, but after you've been there that long going home sounds pretty good. That's a long flight back to Connecticut

I have 2 teams both 2 wins away but I think the Riveira is already sold out. My brother won the Jack and Jill which is same week in August and he could not find a room

my team went last year for 9 ball. 1st time ever for any of us that went. 2 guys on the team that have went before could not make it.

here is my experience. since it was our 1st time and did not really know the ins and outs i had the lo take care of every thing....he did the same for other teams.

i requested 4 rooms for 6 nights and 7 plane tickets for leaving on wednsday. a few days before we were to leave 3 players had personal issues come up. i contacted my lo and he rescheduled their flights which the airlines charged us for.1 player could not leave until thursday and 1 could not leave till fri morning and 1 could not leave at all .

the 1 who could not leave at all was allowed to use his flight at a later date for personal use. no problem with the team at all.

the lo said once we got to vegas to contact him and we would recieve the rest of our allotted money. we recieved 450.00 from him after arriving in vegas. it would have been more but the rescheduled flights cost us .

upon registering we recieved 350.00 from apa.

we were put out of the tournament sun morning but decided to stay the whole 6 days. we rented a car and went to hoover dam sunday afternoon.

monday we got up early and drove to the grand canyon.flew back home tue around noon.

we probably would have returned sun or mon but my g/f put 20.00 in a penny slot machine and won 2,000.00 so we decide to make a mini vacation with the casinos money.

bottom line is our lo paid for 4 rooms for 6 nights... 7 plane tickets which cost extra for 3 being reshceduled and handed us 450.00 upon arriving in vegas.

This is all fantastic information. Thanks to all for taking the time to post it. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the area that has gone so won't get much feedback there. It looks like the Open 8B tournament is Aug 14-23. I have no idea how I'm gonna be able to take off 10 days from work. Geez. I thought it would be like 4 or 5 days.

Lorider, What hotel did you stay at? So you got a reduced $450 from your LO and $350 from the APA at reg? That's total right? Not per player?

I was there in 08 and stayed at the Sahara. Not sure if it's still open but it was only a block away. What I received from the LO covered it for the week.

If you are not use to the heat be careful about hanging out in the sun all day if you have a match later on in the afternoon. That sun can beat you down more than you think and suddenly when you get back in the ac playing area with the dimmed lights, your mind might not adjust well.

JBB2388...The 8ball team tournament is only 5 days...usually Tues - Sat. The ten days you're talking about includes the 9ball team event too. When I was an APA LO I provided my teams with paid team tournament entry fees, hotel rooms at the Riv (4 rooms, 2 people to a room) for 5 nights, $500 in gas money (my teams drove from MT), plus $1200 in spending money ($150 per team member). All told, teams going to Vegas got about $4000 for their trip...and I was just a little guy with less than 100 teams! :grin-square:

Scott, thanks for the info. OK yeah, I just checked the APA website and it indicates the 8 Ball part of it is Aug 17-23. Thats Sunday to Sat... a bit more doable.

if it's at the Riviera (yes, Sahara's been gone a while), the rates should be $25/night-ish. it's always best to stay @ the host hotel, cause you save on cabs. they have a really good restaurant that has access to the pool.

Stratosphere ($25/night & $100 in free chips) & Circus Circus (maybe $30/night?), are across the street. Circus Circus will be full of FAMILIES/CHILDREN. Strat is full of hookers. Golden Nugget upfitted 1-2yrs ago & i hear it's amazing.

it will be 118 degrees, Honey! you'll find yourself paying $5 cab just to save the walk across the street & passing out en route (especially if yáll have been drinking). as for renting a car - don't touch the door handle! you'll have 5th degree burns. we literally fried eggs on the hood, our 1st time there on JUL 30 for the press.

buffets are the cheapest route. if you play slots, you drink for free. cab from airport is $20 - have the driver stop on the way & stock up @ the store. and one night, y'all split a cab, and have them drive you up the Strip for the sights. there's nothing better than The Lights, at night. it'll be a slow drive due to traffic. and worth it.
Bellagio fountains - every 30mins
Mirage volcano - every hour
Treasure Island pirate ship performance

also, go to Stratosphere - The Tower Restaurant. MAKE RESERVATIONS (even if 30mins advance). they have a bar, or you can eat (bar is a LOT cheaper). 104th floor (they have a metal detector!) the restaurant turns. revolves. around all of Vegas....

then, if yáll are drunk enough, you can go to the TOP, and ride the rides or skydive down to the street! (if you stay @ Strat, the $40 rides are comped)

be careful out on the street down @ that end. pickpockets.

i don't know how much % our League is kicking in - i need to find out - but i can assure you it won't be enough....

Don't forget the resort fee, it's an extra $20 per day. A lot of teams and players stayed at the LVH. They had pretty good rates. It's off the strip right behind the Riv. If you do rent a car, or cars there are other options, like Henderson or Downtown. The rates on the strip are gonna be higher, but it's how you experience Las Vegas and if you don't get there very often you really need to stay on the strip and get the full casino experience, but if you're not wanting to have the full effect (or if you fear the full effect) there are options off the strip that are much more cost effective. Look at some maps and google "Las Vegas Strip" and "Las Vegas Hotels" or "Las Vegas off strip"

i stayed at the circus circus. i asked my lo to get our rooms there because i heard it was cheap and right across from the riviera. o one told me it was a long ass walk from the back of one hotel to the back of the other. one of our rooms was at the front of circus circus and my team mates could leave their room at the same time as i and get to the tourny 10 minutes before me.

yea it 450.00 from my lo and 350.00 from apa for the whole team....not individually.

our lo sent 8 teams to vegas

2- 8 ball

2- 9 ball

2- scotch doubles

1 ladies

and 1 masters team

i do not know where every one stayed but i do know some stayed at circus circus...las vegas hilton...and the stratosphere.

a word of advice ...if you smoke take cigs with you . they are high in vegas. dont even think of buying any at the hotels. we walked down to walgreens and bought a cheap styrofoam cooler and loaded with with cokes and snacks.

we did not bother with food in the room...we ate at the hotel and used discount coupons. oh yea ..there is an i hop ...i think it was down the street next to 7-11 where we ate breakfast mostly. we did find a tobacco shop in a strip shopping center on the other side of walgreens that was pretty reasonable.
