Anyone Came Back Strong after 10 yrs

Lately I hear a lot of talk about players that could come back to play world class pool. I say B/S to that. I saw Mike Segal comeback after a long lay off and do pretty good, but nowhere near his old game. Can anyone name anyone that did it? Johnnyt

Two modern names that come to mind are Rodney Morris and Tony Chohan. Both play pretty freaking strong in my opinion

Yes, it certainly can be done!..I'll explain how and why!..I stepped away from the game completely, for about 20 years. ..Never even went in a poolroom!..I re-married, got a good job, and earned a good pension!..After I retired, (at age 60) and started playing again, in a very short while, I was playing better than I had in my prime! (which was very competitive)

The main reason for this..I believe, was that I was more comfortable, financially, and did not have to depend on hustling pool for my only income!..I was playing guys who had continued to play during my hiatus, that I used to have trouble with, and was soon beating them easily!..Pool had become fun again! :p

PS..Pool really is just like riding a bike..If you had decent skills to begin with, and retained your love for the game, you won't lose it!..It might not work that way for everyone, but thankfully it certainly did for me..

Cecil Tugwell came back in a scary, world-slaying manner after an accident. Not sure of the time frame, but it was considerable since he had to learn to walk and play pool again. He lost the ability to shoot right handed and learned to play left handed. Not quite as deadly, but enough to get the cheddar on the regular.

Regards,

Lesh

Kid delicious took a long break and now he's back pretty strong let's see how this pans out.

After Kim Davenport's accident in 2002, he came back in 2009 (IIRC) at the US Open and finished very high and at times looked like the best player in the field.

I know it's not 10 years, and I know he didn't win, but it was a pretty amazing feat.

Bob did

Bob Vanover who just passed away yesterday, quit playing in his early 20's when
he was a very good player to go into the Army. After his service he worked at
Haverty's Furnitore for over 20 years and never hit a ball until his mid 40's. Became
9 times Texas State Champion and many other state and national senior titles.
He is Cigar Tom's brother who is also a very good player. So it is possible.

I turned 50 a few months ago and joined a league in fall after a 9 year layoff. Not only do I think I can reach my prior level play I think I can exceed it. I'm going to see an instructor tomorrow and will be joining a straight pool league in addition to my VNEA league. Next up is the eye doctor.
I don't expect to be the top US player but I think I could break a 100 ball run in 14.1 and fully intend on doing so before I reach 55. I think this is a reasonable goal for someone my age.

Not that this is even remotely close but, I quit for 2.5 years and walked into a place with some BB's, played around for 20mins then beat the ghost 10 -1. Hung the 7 ball in like the 7th or 8th rack because of talking to somebody and not concentrating(my fault).

I agree, it's like riding a bike. I think the long layoffs are actually good for you.

I said world class pool.so maybe 2 in 75 years and they would be far from world class today. jt

Many years ago, I quit for TWO YEARS and some of my childhood buddies called the house to tell me how my homies had almost won THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP in Vegas. They said that with my help, despite the fact that I hadn't played in 2 years, they could win THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

It was a Monday night APA team and I played with them and worked my way back up to a "5" in the APA and we won the local and regional events to qualify for Vegas. As soon as we arrived all of my buddies starting drinking alcohol like Vegas was going to run out of it. We lost miserably and I left the APA as a 5.

I'm still struggling to get back to a 6 level.
