Anyone ever heard of "Gibby" cues?

I have a friend with a cue signed "Gibby 96" He told me he won
it in a game about 10-15 years ago. Its an 8 pointer with veneers.
The points are 4 high, and 4 low, and aren't very even, but its a
good looking cue. The most intriguing part of the cue is the fact
that it has a very thin butt. It looks like it tapers from the joint
to the top of the wrap, and then its a straight even diameter all
the way to the butt cap. So, has anyone ever heard of this
cuemaker, and if so, what would the approximate value of the
cue be? I'll take some pics, and specs, and get them up in the
very near future, but thought I'd start the thread anyway.

Thanks all in advance, Dom.

O.K., Pics are below, and here are some specs also. My scale
is kinda broken, so weights are approximate within a few tenths
of an ounce.

Looks to be a 5/16-18 flat faced joint. I don't know what the joint,
buttcap, and ferrule material are.

Butt is approximately 14.5 oz.
.824 diameter at the joint.
.924 diameter at the top of the wrap.
1.045 diameter at the bottom of the wrap.
1.104 diameter at the end of the butt cap.

Shaft is approximately 3.5 oz.
12.55 mm at the bottom of the ferrule.
.824 diameter at the end of the shaft collar.

Thanks again all. Please let me know what you
think this cue is approximately worth. My buddy
might have me put it up for sale if he likes what
he hears. LOL.

Looking fwd to pics.

Sounds like a real home-made cue. You never know what kinda of mad wood skills are floating out there!

Its really a sharp cue. Maple points with an Ebony
forearm. Veneers are nice, just not the most even
points. I'll get pic's up soon.

Still waiting on those pics...jeeziz! Hurry up!;)

I like a little roughness in a cue. You get those pics up yet?

I'm pretty sure that's Billy Gibbs an apprentice of mine. He was originally from Lebanon Ohio but move to Tennessee in the late 80's. Back then he was a luthier, building and repairing guitars & basses for Nashville musicians. He started apprenticing with me about '95 and still makes regular trips from Tennessee to Cincinnati and works some in my shop. In fact he just went back Tuesday. He also works for Accu-Stats doing camera work and some commentary. He built the Accu-Stats Arena that is used at the Derby and on Pat's streamed game show. I believe the arena has been re-named the Simonis Arena recently due to Simonis' sponsorship. Billy has been working on a low deflection shaft that he tells me is gaining popularity in the Knoxville area. As far as the value of the cue, that's a hard one especially in this economy, but I can say he's turned into a fine cuemaker.

Thank you Sherm, I really appreciate it. Wow, he started apprenticing with
you in '95, and was firing out 8 pointers with veneers in '96. You must be
one hell of a teacher. Much appreciated.

Bump for pic's and specs. Please lemme know what you think the
approximate value of this cue would be. Either in the thread, or
by PM. Either is just fine by me!

Frankly, I'm not so sure now. The weight bolt looks different, the pin,the bumper, the signature and the ringwork. There may be another Gibby around.

I have a Gibby sneaky. I really know nothing about the cue.

Nice to find out that whoever made it, made more then one cue.:D

Thanks Sherm, I was hoping we got somewhere. Well, back to square one.
So, to the top we go!:D

If you have seen ANY of Sherm's stuff you already know Sherm don't play... All his stuff is top notch. Billy was a master Luthier from Gibson guitar so he had a head start on most apprentices.....

I don't know if this is one of Billy's or not but if it is I would be proud to have it... none of the customs Billy has turned out in the 2 years will likely hit the market anytime soon... Not only has he developed his own LD shaft but he is willing to tune the hit, balance, weight, and playability in every cue he makes.... It's slow work and not very profitable... But if you can make it thru the wait and adjustment you will be hard pressed to find a cue that you will replace one of his customs with.....

I'll see if I can get him on here to verify but he's on his way back to Ohio in the next few days so Sherm may have to get him to respond....

Thanks for the post. I appreciate it. So, would anyone know of how to
get a hold of Billy, and have him take a look at this thread? I figure he's
the best chance we have right now to find out if its his or not.

Thanks again all.

The Gibby that most likely made that cue was from Findlay, Ohio. It looks exactly like the style of cues he made at the time. All of his cues had very thin butts. Denny Stewart sold some of these cues out of Downing Billiards for Gibby. He could probably verify the signature.

The cue looks like a Gibby, The sig looks the same. I just don't remember him doing G on the Rubber Bumper. Gibby is Steven Gibson from Findlay, Oh.

Thank you very much Denny. I appreciate it. Could you tell me what a cue
like this one was selling for? Or maybe what this cue would be worth
today? Thanks, Dom.

The former owner of tablesteaks poolhall here in colorado used to sell cues made by "Gibby" I was under the impression he was local but never met him. All I ever saw was converted house cues usally with colorful plastic rings in them. I will ask arounf and see if he ever did any v point cues.
