A player named Charley Nighthorse? The name may have been an alias. I backed Gary Spaeth playing him onepocket in the early or mid ninties. At the time he was about 40-45 years old long hair in a loose pony tail. He was about 6' tall and around 220+ ponds slight belly. He played onepocket as well as anyone I have ever seen play, and I have staked Cliff, Jeremy, Parica, etc a few times. The guy did not play in the tournament (Akron open) but played a few local players, Mike Viero, Kenny K, Gary, and also played Norm Wines. I backed gary playing 200 a game onepocket and we pulled up after 4 games. I had never heard of the guy before and have not seen him since. He told me he lived on tribal land? in Montana. It was not JR Gay he was darker with no moustache and played at least two balls better. Gary wanted to play him banks but after watching the onepocket game I thought Gary had no chance. In hindsight that may have been a mistake. I am curious if anyone knows who this may be and what happened to him? Any replies are welcome

this guy may have came through nc recently just before the viking tour event in greenville, nc. he was an indian, shaved bald, no mustache nor beard, about 6' around 200 maybe a bit more, had a bit of a gut. another guy with him said they were from cleveland area(pretty much evasive). would not give a name for the indian guy. he beat a strong local(brian capps) here (at randolph's)one night-nine ball i believe. shot with a real nice ebony with huge ivory points cognescenti(sp?). shot very methodically(read slowly, and very carefully). did not miss very much, played fine safeties.

Sounds like a guy from Michigan who was indeed a full blooded Cherokee Indian who also purported to live on a local Indian reservation. Your description fits him perfectly including the belly which was all flab and saggy.
His game was too strong for the local hot shots which included some very strong players. If it was him and if he is still alive, my guess is he got lost in the bottle. Indian Joe was a very heavy drinker!

I don't recall that Indian Joe missed anything he shot at. He beat the best in the house on a seven foot bar box. That included Mark Donner and his calibre player... all top amateurs. What amazed me most was his continual drinking while playing. Seemed like instead of getting drunk, he just got better!
When everyone quit him, he threw all his cash on the table which had to have been at least a couple thousand and bet anyone in the house that he could make a shot that no one else could make. When he got no takers on the bet, he offered odds that he could make it on his first try. He still got no takers. He then bet that no one could even come within six inches of making it in the pocket that he said it would go in. He still got no takers.
Finally, he said OK, "who will buy me a drink if I make the shot"? Naturally everyone said they would and the bartender set up a line of whiskey shots on the bar. Must have been five or six shots of booze poured. Indian Joe pounded them down one after the other and then wiped the residue off his mustache and licked his fingers. Then without hesitation he grabbed the house cue that he played with to beat everyone and sure enough made the ball on his first attempt. It was an awesome shot that I have since made several bets on myself. At that time the shot had never been seen by anyone. I have rarely ran across anyone today who has seen it either though I have on occassion met a few who saw it before.
Then before leaving with his buddy who was not an Indian by the way, he set up one more very difficult and seemingly impossible shot. Again, with the house cue, he back jumped the cue ball off the short rail the complete length of the table and drilled the object ball in the opposite corner pocket. I never saw anything like it before in my life and I have been around this game for over fifty years!
That was fifteen years ago!

Great stuff! This is one of the best features of a net pool forum, where players of distinction can get recognized. I'm not aware of any Native American players who possess the type of game this gentleman brings; could he be the best Native American player ever? As someone with a little Cherokee blood in me, I would be interested to find out who the "pool Chief" is. Thanks for a great thread and great inputs from everyone.

Give me a call. B gets here the 1st of July - Mid August so I can't have any visitors during that time but now would be a great time.
