Anyone found your perfect Pool Cue Case yet?

It is a good point I think about the differences between what we need (storage for cues to get from car to pool hall) and what we want (silver hardware with baby seal leather). I like to go one step over what is average and no further.

Your point is well taken and I appreciate your point of view. To spend for ornamentation on something inherently used for practical purposes seems excessive. To deprive more noble causes of the potential charity OR to contribute to far less noble actions like killing animals or adorn a case with their skin even further excentuates the question "WHY?"

I can only say of my personal "case utopia," made by Joe Whitten, that there are qualitative differences in its design that offer truly practical value.

Whitten cases were hydrometer tested (I think that is the devise) by Ernie of Ginacue and found to be the best at keeping moisture away from the cue. Opinions vary about cause and control measures for cue warpage, but when I store my ivory handled box cue, personal player or collectable Szamboti, I want the best. If Ginacue issues such a case with every cue, that says something of a practical nature for cue care.

Whitten cases have spring loaded shaft tubes. I prefer not to drop my shaft collars onto any surface that can affect the face or finish. I think the Whitten design is best in this regard too.

Lastly, I like the notion that Whitten cases last. Perhaps this may not be true for all users, but in my experience they wear like iron. I still use a 1X2 that Joe's father Dan made in his first year of operation. Same zipper, same leather, no restoration needed. I'm told these cases are so durable a cue can withstand being run over (not something I'll ever be testing)

Whitten Cases earned my business for practical reasons.

The fact that there is a thriving secondary market for these cases, that they can be uniquely customized, or that they can be adorned with rare leathers is great but secondary to their function.

I'm pleased to be buying American from a family owned and operated business. And oh yea...they stand behind their work. Did you ever meet the guy who built your cheap case? He may be 11 years old chained to a work desk...who knows. Moral outrage aside, Where is he when the clasp spring breaks? Joe is always at the show, facing his critics, competitors and customers. I pay more because with Whitten, I get more.

Like a great sportscar, 911 or other, some Whitten cases appreciate in value. Good luck selling that overseas pleather knock-off for anything, let alone the $50 you paid for it.

I use 2 cue cases! One cue case for Derby and EXPO! One case for the pool room!

Expo & Derby:

Bullhide Castillo 4x6 butterfly with backpack straps!!!

Pool Room:

Black 2x4 Hagar with backpack straps!!!

I have a JB case that is 4x6. It is posted in the What's in your JB Case thread. It is ostrich and has the Miami and Metallica logos on it. The way the interior is done, nothing ever comes in contact with the zipper. terrific design and no need for another case. Been selling off the ones I don't need.

McDermott 4x8 soft for me. :) Love that case. There is a spot for your chalk and even a sleeve for a jump cue.

Rusty and Dennis are great also. I just give the nod to the best in the USA to Jack Justis. He has been making cases for a long time.
Barton is NOT a case maker. He has never made cases. He might be a case designer or case company owner but that's it. I wouldn't recommend investing in any case company in which the owner is involved so much drama. Its not healthy for resale value. JMHO...... You or anyone else doesn't have to agree or argue with my opinion. It is the same opinion to many other players, cuemakers and collectors worldwide.....

You are wrong Chamberlain. I, John Barton, have made and continue to make cases.

I should not even answer you but your statements are untrue.

You say I don't make cases but I should remind you that Jack Justis DOES NOT MAKE HIS OWN INTERIORS.

He BUYS THEM FROM CHINA.

Again let me repeat that, he buys them FROM CHINA.

From the company that I taught to make cases.

Just in case you didn't get that, the Jiasen case company is making the Justis interiors and I taught Jiasen how to make cases. Prior to that Justis was purchasing his interiors from the Long Chan company. The Long Chan company has copied every known case maker's work including Justis and Whitten.

Do I need to repeat that? I am not sure that you understand plain written english but I am sure everyone else here does understand it.

In my shop I have developed - for you that means I MADE every single part on our cases. Every innovation was INVENTED and CREATED by me.

All of these and more were thought of and then MADE BY ME BEFORE we ever used them on a case.

Not only that I have repaired plenty of other cases at shows to include Justis, Swift, Whitten etc... even at the recent Super Billiards Expo and the just completed Derby City Classic. References and witnesses (from high end collectors and dealers) on request.

So, if I am not a case maker then I am one hell of a case repairman because every one that I touch ends up better than it was before it got to me.

Missed you at the show. I didn't even have time to look for you because we were busy for the entire show.

I really like my Buffalo InStroke 3x5...I wish I would of got the 2x4 instead though. One of these days I'll get a high end custom but first I have find the right builder to make what I have in my head...

Well I am going to buy a JB Case. But I do not have the scratch now and it will likely be about 5 months before I will have the money to do so. But It will be a nice solid leather 3x6 case to my specifications. I will want my name on it and I want the JB because I have seen first hand that they look like they can survive a direct nuclear strike. You get what you pay for. Additionally I can flame JB here if I am unhappy LOL.

Skittles,

Lesh

So far I've gone through several Ron Thomas cases, a couple of Centennials,
a JB hustler, a few Whittens, and a Jim Murnak...

out of all these I presently have 3 Whittens..

I am looking forward to trying out

Chuck Fields
Rusty Melton

the 2x4 cheapo Action case i have is perfect for my needs. especially for the $35 or so (wholesale) I paid for it. I can't see bothering with anything else. I never understood some people's needs for a fancy/custom/expensive case. In the 25 years I've been playing I've personally never paid attention to anyone's case in any league or poolhall, I just don't care. It's just a case. I didn't even know there were such things as custom cases until I came to this website and saw banner ads and signatures for them all over the place. I wouldn't use one of those if it was free...

went from my road case to my everyday case. But as you can see in time i'm gonna have to put it down to preserve it. Looks more expensive than it is and that's also a plus.

No I have not. I have a JB prototype, love the interior. Zippers not so much.
Also have an older Dennis Swift, no jump handle pocket. I think i'm going to have him put one on it.

I have a 4x8 JB Rugged Ultimate in plain black. Perfect case by far. It protects my valueable assets and looks likes "everybody elses" case to the lay man. Best billiard related purchase I've made so far.:)

The first custom case I ever had made was a Jay Flowers 2X4 tube case in 1987 after seeing guys come through town with their JF 2X4 cases, like Buddy Hall and Tommy Kennedy, since then that is what I always have used, works out perfect for me, all my playing cues have 2 shafts and some of my B/J cues have 2 shafts, Then I have a couple B/J with one shaft and carry a separate jump cue & shaft.

All 2X4 tube cases, Left to right; Jay Flowers, Justis and a John Barton.
