Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum. I've recently started playing in an APA 8-ball league and find, despite owning the APA rules booklet, that I am unclear on some issues.

Can anyone answer my queries? Thanks! :

1) If you hit one of your balls legally and then one of your balls goes down, and then an opponent's ball goes down, do you continue playing?

2) If you pocket an opponent's ball while/after legally pocketing the 8-ball, do you lose?

3) If you scratch off the 8-ball when it's not the ball on, do you lose?

4) If you bank the cue-ball into a rail/cushion and then hit one of your own balls, but the hit ball does not hit a rail/cushion, is it a foul? (You still caused the cue-ball to hit a rail).

5) If you make another ball while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, do you lose? Does it make a difference whether you pocket the 8-ball or the other ball first?

Hi, I'm new here too but think I can help...My answers are below, please feel free to correct me if anyone knows better.

Hi Guys,

1) If you hit one of your balls legally and then one of your balls goes down, and then an opponent's ball goes down, do you continue playing?
Yes, as long as you hit your ball first.

2) If you pocket an opponent's ball while/after legally pocketing the 8-ball, do you lose?
No. You just need to pocket the 8 in the called pocket. It doesn't matter how it gets there. (ie another ball can go in or it can go in off another ball, only the called pocket matters)

3) If you scratch off the 8-ball when it's not the ball on, do you lose?
No. If you're not shooting the 8 ball, you would simply be giving ball in hand to your opponent on the next shot since you fouled.

4) If you bank the cue-ball into a rail/cushion and then hit one of your own balls, but the hit ball does not hit a rail/cushion, is it a foul? (You still caused the cue-ball to hit a rail).
Yes. You need to hit a rail AFTER contacting the object ball. This means either the CB or the OB needs to hit the rail after contact.

5) If you make another ball while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, do you lose? Does it make a difference whether you pocket the 8-ball or the other ball first?
No difference. You win the game.

1)...yes

2)...no

3)...no (I think you are asking if the cue ball scratches after hitting the 8...not real clear. If you sink the 8 at any time, other than when you are on the 8, you lose..you have to make it in the marked pocket when you are on it).

4)yes...any ball has to hit a rail AFTER you make legal contact with the ball...If you kick a ball (cue ball hits rail and makes contact with you ball legally) and no ball makes contact with a rail AFTER that contact, it is a foul).

5)...no...no...but you DO lose if you pocket the 8 and scratch

1) If you hit one of your balls legally and then one of your balls goes down, and then an opponent's ball goes down, do you continue playing?

Yes, you continue your turn at the table.

2) If you pocket an opponent's ball while/after legally pocketing the 8-ball, do you lose?

If you executed a legal shot on the 8..made it, and then pocketed one or more of your opponent's balls you still win. You would only lose if you scratched

3) If you scratch off the 8-ball when it's not the ball on, do you lose?

No, you only lose if you scratch on the 8 when it is your object ball.

4) If you bank the cue-ball into a rail/cushion and then hit one of your own balls, but the hit ball does not hit a rail/cushion, is it a foul? (You still caused the cue-ball to hit a rail).

Yes it is a foul, the cue ball or any other ball must hit a rail AFTER it contacts an object ball.

5) If you make another ball while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, do you lose? Does it make a difference whether you pocket the 8-ball or the other ball first?

No you don't lose, it is an automatic win.

The APA has all their rules and other information online for you. The 8 ball and 9 ball rules booklet is just the rules; the team manual contains a lot of information about the league format in addition to the full set of rules. It's good information to know.
