Hi im new to the forums. i live in florida and was wondering if anyone knows if there are pool scholarships. kind of interested if there are any. if anyone knows please post it. thanks

I hate when some moron answers a serious post or question with a stupid comment.
BUT...here I go with my very own stupid comment, and it's as old as water.

"I got a Phd".....A Pool Hall Degree :D

And I did it all on my own, no help from the government!

Kseriesek, MacGyver, being the good pool detective that he is, gave you a mighty big clue. Good luck to you as you seek out more info.

Good job there MacGyver.

It was in the year 1989, a short 15 years ago, the first BCA National Junior 8-ball Championship occurred in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1991, 70 youngsters competed for over $30,000 in college scholarships and prizes in the 14-and-under and 18-and-under divisions! (Those really were the good old days!).

Here is a copy-and-paste of a little pool history as it pertains to pool scholarships:

In the 14-and-under division, a young boy by the name of Charlie Williams from Newport News, Virginia, advanced to the top of the winners' bracket. With the title, Charlie received a $3,500 college scholarship to the educational institution of his choice, a brand-new Kasson pool table, a Joss cue stick, a cue case by It's George, and several other prizes.

As an aside, in this same tournament in the 18-and-under division, there were a couple of other familiar faces. Max Eberle from Arlington, Virginia, rose to the top of the charts, defeating Chan Whitt from Lewisburg, West Virginia (What ever happened to Chan?) and future North Carolinean Champion Michael Coltrain. Along with his trophy, Max received a $3,500 college scholarship, a brand-new A.E. Schmidt pool table, a Joss cue stick, a cue case from American Vinyl Products, and several other prizes with a total value of approximately $8,000.

The BCA (Billiard Congress of America) in the past made an effort to provide pool scholarships via their BEF (Billiard Education Foundation) program.

Unless I have missed it, I see no information about this program for 2009.

The BCA has announced there will be no BCA Open (pro event) for 2009 due to financial hardships.

I thought I remember reading that Allen Hopkins' wife, Dawn Hopkins, was the BEF representative for the BCA. Check post No. 6 in this thread: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=92088&highlight=Dawn+Hopkins

Due to the recent announcement(s) of the BCA financial hardships, I would suggest giving them a call on their toll-free number: 1-866-852-0999

Good luck!

KseriesK,
You missed my point. I have no college degree. No such thing as a Pool Hall Degree, that's why I didn't get no help with it.

Good luck in your search for help.

JAM...That program has not existed for several years now, and during the last few years it did exist, the prize was a $1000 scholarship...no pool tables. The BCA provides no scholarships whatsoever. Laura Smith heads the BEF, not Dawn Hopkins. Laura is attempting to gain some sponsorships that will enable some kind of scholarship program to resume.

Kseriesek...In a word, NO. What are your qualifications? Were you a straight A student in high school and jr. college? If so, you might have an option. If not, forget about getting anything. It's not about how you play...it's about how smart you are.

i know there is no such thing as a Pool Hall Degree. but you were being sarcastic but its cool. thanks for your input

i was just asking a legitimate question because i couldnt find info.

yes i am a great student in the national honor society. 3.9 gpa etc. like i said was just trying to see if there was an opportunity to get one.
but thanks for the help

kseriesek I think I understand your situation.... I'm 21 and a president of a collegiate billiards club. I have looked in lots of places for additional funding and there just isn't any money right now.

There is a lot of talk about it and most agree that it is a good idea but no one is willing to act. A slow economy does not help either... right now its tough to find funding for pro's much less students...where there is zero possibility of a financial return.

Maybe there will be something in the future but even that would be extremely difficult to win... I tell ya what; if you have good grades..get a good business or communications degree, go to work for one of the big billiard companies and get them to set up a program...I'll try to do the same and maybe 20 years from now we can give our children these kinds of opportunities that we will never have.
