Anyone tried a new Popper Jump Cue ?

They're great for close jumps - a balls width or less, even down below a chalk width. It makes it easy to clear a full object ball and get the cue ball down quickly. Comfortably, I can get the CB over a full ball about 2 diamonds away on a 9ft table. The CB will generally land just short of 4 diamonds. Anything longer than that and I'd turn to a heavier jump cue. Actually, I'd probably use a regular jump cue from two or three ball widths away if I had space on the other side of the blocking ball.

If you're interested in jumping high, these cues will also do it too. I've seen guys clear a standing rack with it.

http://www.drpopperjumpq.com/howtouse_drpopper_jump_cue.php I t is a link to there video . was wondering if anyone has one or had one, Positives, Negatives, Thanks, Todd

I always wondered about this jumper myself then last weekend I ran into
a guy at a tournament that had one . From my first impression I thought it looked like some kind of little gadget or some thing it in no way resembles a pool cue . The biggest part of the handle is not much bigger than a #2 pencil and made of some non wood material .

The guy that owned it was very proud of it as he described it and how well it worked . So we made our way to an open table and I set up a jump shot at witch I failed miserably four or five times . He then says you have to hold the popper straight up and down and hit right down on the top of the cue ball dead center ! Sounded odd to me but I thought what the hey lets try it . Again I fail !

He says here let me show you how . The he failed just as bad as I did over and over again . I was very very glad I had a chance to try one without having to buy one .

Hope this helps .

I just read your review of the Popper and I'm glad you are happy with your Popper maybe The guy that was showing the thing to me didn't know how to use it and I did not figure it out . I can jump a full ball from around a chalks distance with a Jacoby jumper or a Mezz Shooter so I can jump pretty well I must have been doing something wrong with the Popper but my normal approach to jumping did not work .

I modified mine slightly to make it a lot easier to work with. I use a nickel shaper/scuffer and I chalk it. It is very prone to miscues otherwise.

Yes, that is an awesome jump cue. It's great for getting a lot of height at short distances. I don't like it for long jumps though.

Here's 2 videos I made. The fist is self explanatory. In the second one I use the Dr Popper cue for the last 2 jumps.

P.S. How do you embed a youtube video in here?

Awesome video's sir. My jump shots with the Popper pretty much looked like your first one in the first video :grin-square: That last jump where you jump the height of over 5 balls  wild man ! Great Job !!!

The guy that owned the Popper was telling me not to chalk it and it was FLAT at the tip ! I bet it would work better with your mods.

Jumps

The super light jump cues can get over balls, or close up jumps, and the little heavier jump cues are better for accuracy, but can't get it over a close ball.

I have owned an original Frog (good accuracy, needed to be 5" away), a Scorpion (could jump closer than 5", maybe 3.5", but accuracy wasn't too good, and now I have a J&J break/jump cue with phenolic ferrule/tip and I do pretty good with it.

I have tried several others though, maybe about 6-8 others, including the Jacoby and Predator Air (same problem with it, gets over, but accuracy suffers).

Don't buy a jump cue if all you shoot with them is a jump shot with the ball in the jaws of a pocket. Put the object ball in the 'middle' of the table where you have to cut the ball into the corner pocket. Now jump a ball and do that with this jump cue you are thinking of buying. And do it several times at different angles. Then decide if you want it.

LOL ... I don't use the dart stroke usually, but one night I had to. The guy left me where I could not reach the cue ball for my normal jump stroke. I had to go to the side of the table, lean over, and dart stroke a jump shot on my last stripe close to the long rail. Now, keep in mind that I don't DART, and I was leaned clear over to the side. I made the shot, and got perfect shape on the 8 with about a 6" window. Made the 8 and won the game. Go figure .... :o:o:o

Thanks guys!

Yes, after shaping the tip and chalking it my accuracy went up about 400%. I understand why he makes it with a flat tip, but it's just REALLY difficult to use that way.

I use the dart stroke with the Popper and usually a normal stroke with the Scorpion. Some of the things that Snapshot9 said explain why I carry 2 jump cues. It's all about having the right tool for the job.

The Popper cue has saved my a$$ more than once after my opponent has played a wicked safety and left me hooked. If I have at least 1 ball distance from the obstacle I can clear it no problem.

Like anything, you have to practice, practice. It took about 2 hours to make that second video and I destroyed the cloth on my table. I could probably make that same video in 10 minutes now and I almost never hit the table with my cue anymore.

Yes, it does take some practice to find the right technique and aim points, especially for this cue. I've kept my Dr. Popper with the original flat tip and try not to chalk it at all. If I need to hit a short jump with spin, I'd probably use my Chilton.

Had one. Ya, it works. But .... you'll have to change your "jump style". The tip is flat, no round at all. Takes a bit of getting used to.
