I know a 530ish guy (high robustness) who is an SL7/9. Getting to SL7 at that Fargo is fairly common in some areas but I'm struggling to see how he's an established SL9. I always thought that was more the realm of people who are approaching or just over 600.

The 7/9 in our area was a Fargo 600-ish (now a Fargo 627 but he stopped playing APA a few sessions ago)
We also had a Fargo 540 7/8.

Once I saw pics of the set up I regretted not going for a moment or two.

Truth is... I was going to be $800-1k in for travel and expenses. Didn't make any sense for me to incur that cost just to 'potentially' win a prize that only costs ~$1000cdn, (USopen entry). If the wife could have taken the time off work, it may have changed things.

I've had a fairly busy fall with pool this year, and work went to hell in a hand basket. Deciding not to partake was the right call. Maybe next year, if I try and qualify again.

The few SL9's we have in our area are all 600+ Fargos. We do have some SL7's in the 500's. We play on 9's tho

Even though games from APA leagues and tournaments have not been going into FargoRate, many of the high finishers in this tournament have well established ratings. Number of games in FargoRate in parentheses.

Final 8

Brett Stottlemyer, PA, 722 (5504 games)
Joshua Watson, NV, 677 (2583 games)
Jacob Watson, TX, 682 (1386 games)
James Adams, FL, 697 (1336 games)
Derek Schwager, PA 695 (1231 games)
Corey Sykes, NC 704 (955 games)
Elkhattabi Badr, QC 661 (934 games)
Clint Clark, NC 666 (164 games)
i haven't seen Brett in a while since he moved to Maryland and I missed the expo this year but a good friend said Brett now plays a lot of league pool simply because most of the tournaments are Fargo rated and they are 650 and below so he can’t play

Clearly Brett plays APA league and that is off our radar
He also plays in a Thursday in-house 9-Ball league that uses LMS and a Tuesday traveling league that uses LMS. In the last 3 months, he has 160 league games going into FargoRate. In that same 3 months, Brett has 10 tournaments totaling 308 games that have gone into FargoRate.

So for the last 3 months
12 league games per week going into FargoRate
24 tournament games per week going into FargoRate

Hello, you’ve posted before about Fargo capped tournaments, and not being able to play. It’s a nice problem to have, but still a problem.

Gotcha. Yeah, I love handicapped tournaments. I just wish everyone could play :). I've played a lot of these guys before. Brett been a great player for years! Last year's champion Jacob Watson plays great. Hell, almost everyone in that tournament can play! I played in it once maybe 15 years or more ago. It was fun even though I think I only won a match or two.

Brett hasn't played APA in over two years. His last matches were in October 2021. All amateurs are welcome in the U.S. Amateur. It is intended to be a premier event that showcases top amateur talent. There are tons of amateurs that won't enter for cost/time/travel reasons, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Fargo is a blessing and a curse. It's neat to compare yourself, with reasonable accuracy, against others. However, now everyone wants either big spots or you're shunned from local tournaments, albeit they are more "fair" for the general populous.

Long gone are the days of a hustle or just playing against a random person. They now need your fargo and robustness to consider playing you. That's the first question anyone asks me, "what's your fargo?".

I'd much rather play a stronger player, even. It'll force me to push myself to that next level, which is the only way to get better. Just my unwarranted two cents.

Back on topic, Brett is a hell of player and well deserving of his win!

I was an SL 7/9 and originally ranked by Fargo in the 565 range but now 625

Haha. I haven't had the opportunity to play him yet. I just joined a league at his home hall, Capone's. I watched him play one APA match and then critiqued his stroke a little and his teammates all laughed at him. I was mainly just poking fun, but he does have that inwardly crooked arm that he makes work!

And he is an amateur. He works a 40 hour week job. lol no pro would play in the amateur. There’s no money in it. You get this all the time. They complained when parks was winning to.
i did see Ryan mccreesh complaining he’s been banned from apa because of skill level which seems odd Since I feel like they always matched up Even But who knows.

I was At an apa tournament where you had to qualify by winning a mini to get there. I started my match and I heard them give them the 15 minute if your opponent isn’t here it’s a forfeit please come to the desk speech As I was getting my break cue after pocketing the 9 on I think the 2nd rack . I looked down and brett was already breaking his cue down. 75-0. the guy never hit a ball lol. I’m a 9 but that’s a different level 9 then me for sure 😂
