APA Captains - throw or defer?

Persuasive...

I always put up first when I can. I just plain disagree with the thought process of "you get to match up 3 times". By the time the 4th and 5th match rolls around the numbers are pretty much determined and each team knows what the other is going to play. So I want the opposite team putting up in the 4th match, because I get to match up the last two matches that way. There has been plenty of times that I've been behind going into the 4th match, but because they have to put up in the 4th match, I'm at an advantage.

To combat throwing blind in the first match, I'm throwing my most consistent 4/5 in that match. Preferably a 4 if I have it. No 7 is ever going to prefer to play a solid 4. And a solid 4 is going to beat most low numbers. So I fele at worst, I'm going to get a coin flip in the first match and I control who play who in the 4th and 5th match.

This is a very persuasive argument for throwing out first, and the one I see the most. Appreciate the input :)

When I played APA my team went to Vegas a couple of times and every time we started out with our second best player, try to steal one in the middle, and finish with our iron. Didn't always work out but it did more than it didn't.
For that reason, if we won the toss, we would put up first.

I throw first almost every time. I like to control the final 2 matches.

Ditto. Throw first.

For those saying that say they control 3 matches if they defer, that might be the obvious answer on the surface, but obvious rarely pans out. By the time the 4th match comes, you know who is left, what the 23 rule is limiting for put ups, who has been drinking...

Responding in the 4th game is one of those strategies that allows the controlled response in the 4th game, while totally dictating how they respond in game 5. In other words, whoever responds in the 5th game isn't responding with any strategy, but rather with necessity based on who is left and what the numbers dictate. That's not control.

Here’s the correct answer - it depends. Sometimes, you defer. Other times, you put up first.

This is the best answer IMO. As a Captain, I've done it both ways and never saw a distinct advantage one way or another.

Plus that....it's APA, have fun and stop overthinking it.

And for those who say you can control "X" amount of matches, I don't buy that. It's a handicapped league and NOBODY can control how anyone shoots on any given night.

Reading this... I agree, the it depends is the correct answer...

Against an evenly put together team (a lot of 4s/5s) where all 8 people come out you may not have an idea who they are throwing late...

Now if they are a team where only 5 (maybe 6) usually show up... while different ball of wax

Winning the first match is really important (psychologically) for most teams... if I have a 4/5 I feel really good about with anyone they could match with... that also plays into the thought process

Opposite... if I loss the flip and the other team says they are going to put up, I let them know who I will be playing first, the majority of the time they match up evenly so I always get the first put up...even if I don't!
