APA Franchise.

I believe the reason they do not switch to call pocket is because this is a league for amateurs, and sometimes to win amateurs need some luck!
I think it also cuts down on arguments, and speeds up the matches a bit. No need to argue about if the player meant to bank the ball; no need to make sure you're opponent hears you call the ball before you shoot. Seriously, it's a pretty trivial issue. If two ow handicap players are playing, then there are other luck factors that swamp the luck due to slop. And I'm happy to see a ball go in anyway, just because the match will be over quicker (e.g, 2 vs. 2 match). If two high skill players are playing, then a slop shot is very unlikely to affect the outcome -- maybe 1 in 20 games, or once every three matches. If a high skill player is playing a low skill player, slop helps the low skill player more than the high skill player and so helps even out the match a hair. That's fine by me, since the Equalizer generally doesn't fully equalize.

There are things to complain about with the APA, but the slop rule doesn't really strike me as a big deal.

I’m still curious about how many players TAP has? Sam, oddly enough, said he didn’t know. It’s strange that he’d know how many they’ve ever had, but not how many they currently have? But, I’m sure he’s a very busy man.

VNEA’s site says they have about 100k.
BCA’s says over 54k.
APA apparently has 250k or so.
And there are probably tens of thousands playing in independent leagues.

If you add all those up, that’s a heck of lot of people playing in pool leagues. I don’t know, but would bet that there are almost as many people in pool leagues as there are in bowling leagues.

I’m guessing TAP is the smallest- otherwise they’d put numbers on their site, but who knows...

If the APA didn't have and support leagues then someone else would. What is the problem? We go out 1 or 2 nights a week, play pool, have fun, and meet people. No problem here. There isn't many things you can do for $8 to $10 for 3 to 4 hours of fun.

You're off by quite a bit. According to NSGA stats, there are about 3-4 million 'very active' poolplayers in the U.S. That is defined as people who play pool once a week or more. All of the nationally affiated leagues added together only add up to less than 1/2 million. That means there are at least 5 times as many 'independent' league players, as those who play in APA, BCA, VNEA, & TAP combined. These are folks who just like to play pool. They may play in local leagues, or local tournaments, but are not active in national leagues. To me, that's our target market to widen interest in pool on a national level.

Anyone know more about the BCA?

We live up here in the Northwoods and have our own City/County League for 8-Ball and 9-Ball.

Quite a few of the better players are very interested in joining a sanctioned "money" type league; however, APA needs to be franchised (expensive) and TAP seems very complicated

The consensus here at the moment is leaning towards trying to form a BCA sanctioned league.

Can anyone here tell me how their BCA league operates on a weekly/quarterly/annual basis!? Thanks :)

This should be all of our interest !

To my knowledge, there are no fees associated with starting up a BCA league.
You can organize it any way you please. It can be a money league, or just a fun league. Teams can vie for opportunities to advance to the national tournament in Vegas, if you choose. You can establish weekly fees to support sending a team to Vegas, or not. I'm pretty sure no fees are sent anywhere, except your fee for each player, on an annual basis, to be a member of the BCA Pool League. The BCAPL website can give you more information. You can have a handicapped league locally, if you choose, but there are no handicaps at the national level. Good luck! :D

That is how many players have registered with TAP over the years. I am sure they are not active and I can't give you a number on how many are active because I really don't know.

I tried to stay on the sidelines on this one, but I have followed this thread from the beginning and wondered early on the same thing.

Sam claims to have a pretty good handle on how many current active APAers there are, but claims to not really know how many current active TAP players his own league has? And he's in sales? The VP of sales no less? If he doesn't really know, I would say that's worse than knowing and not being entirely truthful about it. How can the TAP league office not know how much money, it's taking in?

I don't know if Sam has a history or not, but a lot of AZers seem to be on the offensive quick.

I played both APA and TAP for somewhat significant time, and both are very nice leagues. TAP seems to be more progressive in that it keeps track of games won/lost, matches won/lost on a weekly basis. The website is also pretty nice, where they keep weekly stats on line. Also, the website has a message board, where they probably put up with more than it's worth, but it's a credit to them. It's nice to know if a TAP SL4 is six and one or one and six during the middle of the season to match up. Plus, you get to see what others are up to around the league. I like the rules, and I like the overall better quality of play, in my local area, on average. It's too bad TAP didn't take off, and now has disbanded in my local area.

Yes Gerry I'm here, you can relax now.

After those two posts I am reluctant to admit that you play on my team (Breakroom #2) in the GGRPL.

For those who did not follow what you were saying I will explain that you snapped the 8 on the break twice or was it 3 times in double hill matches for the win and with your 8 and 2 record you helped us to another league championship.

Back to the topic of leagues. The GGRPL is a local independent FUN league with about 30 or so teams.
There is an annual $35 tavern, $12 annual player sanction fee and costs $2 a week to play.
All money (after expenses) goes toward trophies, year end banquet and many many door prizes. The LO is paid for expenses and a very small amount for his time (after years of doing it for free).

It based on the APA with several changes. The most notable are:
Call ball and pocket.
No 23 rule.
Safeties DO COUNT as innings.
All matches are played the the full SL, not minus 1 or 2 in the case of a 7.
A player is not penalized for winning because the opponent scratches on the 8, 8 in wrong pocket etc. (unless the APA has recently made a change).
League rules and rule changes are voted on at the captains meetings before each session!

The league is split into 3 divisions determined by the quality of the teams and how they place in the preceding session.

What I like best about this league is the no 23 rule which allows you to put a team of friends together with the fear of having to drop a player because his SL went up. Having grown up in a pool room I do not many low level players so my team consists of 2 SL5, 3 SL6 and 3 SL7. I am the captain and weakest player on the team at SL5.

I will take this opportunity to say that this last session I was tied for the Top Player Award (based solely on number of wins) with Jason Kirkwood. The best part of that is that Jason is on my team.

Sorry this is so long and thanks for reading.

Steve

Thanks Gerry for making me laugh with tears in my eyes for an hour, rep to you my friend.
