APA hotels in Vegas...Need advice

My team is going to Vegas in August for the APA tourny. My lo has enough money to pay the eight airfares. He says he can get us at least two rooms at the Riveria which cost him $85 a night. We will need 4 rooms. We will split the cost of the extra rooms if it turns out he doesn't have enough to cover everything. I've heard the Riveria is a dump. Bad rooms, bad food, bad service. The only thing good about the Riveria is it is a short walk to the pool tables. Someone has gotten me a deal to stay at Treasure Island for $99 a night. Is it worth the extra money and effort to travel back and forth between the hotel and pool rooms? We have to make a decision by tomorrow.
No one on the AZ forum has anything nice to say about the Riveria.
 
My team is going also. I got us rooms at the Sahara which is less then a mile away and on the monorail for $45 a night. Also you can go to Circus circus that is across the street and that is only $45 a night. We only got 2 rooms, we will put 4 in a room.

sahara isn't the best but it's better then the Riviera and Circus Circus, they have cheap blackjack tables, stuff to do like a roller coaster inside but I like the monorail so we can take it into the rest of the strip.
 
I've never stayed at the Riv, but the website claims they have rehabed over 2,000 rooms. So who knows. For sure, there isn't much around it anymore. But travel to the Riv from the TI is going to be a pain, unless you take the deuce up the strip. That's the problem with the Riv. Virtually cut off from the Tram. If I were you guys, I'd stay off the strip somewhere. Ellis Island Super 8 ? Sahara ? With the money you save, you could get a rentacar and drive about. I've got other secrets, but I'm keeping them to myself. Hehehe

I've stayed at Treasure Island an loved it. Just make sure you give yourself enough time for travel. They're are more than enough taxi sevices in Vegas, so thats not a problem. Good Luck
 
Stay at the Riviera?

Yes, not much good has been said about the Riv. They have been upgrading their rooms. They aren't all that bad. I would suggest getting a room in the San Remo or Monoco tower. Monte Carlo is used for comps or for APA related employees (hard to get in there). The Mediterranean Tower in the middle is the dump, (IMO).

Several things to consider. If you stay at the Riv, you will/should
1) enjoy the convenience of being close to your room from the tournament area.
2) you will save $10.00 per day of cue storage, or, carry it back and forth.
3) purchase your beer, soda and snacks at the ABC store. Half the cost of Riv. beer. $3.50 for draft from Riv. $2.50 for a 24 oz beer or $1.79 for 12 oz bottle from ABC.
4) Walk the 2 blocks to Peppermill or to Denny's, (next to Walgreens) for breakfast or lunch. Do not eat at Kady's.
5) you will save the hassle of walking back and forth to other hotels or Bus or cab fare for the duration out there.
6) if you want to drink cheap, go next door to Slots of Fun.

I wouldn't mind staying at some of the other hotels. I had a friend who stayed at the Stratosphere, but, the walk almost killed him. Sahara is right across the street. Circus Circus is still a pretty good walk from the Riv. If you stay there for the cheaper price, make sure you are staying in the tower, the places out back will add about another 20 minutes to your walk.

All in all, the convenience is the major factor. You can put up with the rest of the BS. JMO

Last year we stayed at the Villa Roma. Kinda a dumppy little hotel (not casino) on the outside, rooms were really nice inside. It was cheaper than Sahara last year, but it seems that they have raised their rates. It's back door is right across the drive from the Riv's back door. Too bad that construction fence was up, had to walk across the parking lot to Peppermill Grill before turning back for the Riv's rear entrance. Nothing like walking 1/2 mile just to travel 100yds.

Added: Captain stayed at the Hilton (got a deal), he claims that it was a plesantly short walk.

Anyway it's another option, but to answer the original post, I think you'd be fairly happy with your stay @ TI

Great post. You could also stay at Palace Station. Any of the joints close by are $40 a night or less. Again, for that price, add $20 a day for a car and you are in fat city. I love the 4 queens downtown, too. If you need the cheapest in town, try the place next to Harrah's....the one with the 100x craps...casino royale. About $25 a night and all the booze you can handle.

Although there are a lot of bad things said about the Riv.... Opinions vary on class of hotel. I'm not saying it's a **** hotel. But they have been remodeling some of the rooms. The convenience is the whole thing. If I got bored, or had 3 hours between matches, I could just hit the elevator, and relax in the room.
Best advice for pricing on rooms at the Riv, call and ask to speak to the Players Club desk. If you're planning to gamble even a little bit, join the club and get a slot card. Ask them what kind of room rates you can get. DON"T make your reservation thru the reservation group or a pool tournament group. I bet the players club rate will be about $50 a night or less. And like I said, the convenience is the key factor for me. Check on the rates now.

If you are there to play/win stay there!
Mini-mani and watching is what it is about!
When you are out of tournament you can go anywhere else you want!
you are not in your room much anyway .
I stayed in top notch places before big deal!
I am there for pool/work!
I always stay and go to the big time shows, casinos and restaurants before or after tournament!

As I recall it is a pretty long walk from the monorail to the Riv.

yea it would probably be faster to just walk from sahara to the Riv. But i'm talking about using the monorail to get to the rest of the strip to party! :D
 
Remodeled rooms

Just left the Riv last week and I was fortunate to get one of the partially renovated rooms (same furniture, new beds, tv, alarm clock). It was awesome, the beds were so comfortable, the alarm clock played & charged my iPod, and there was actually more than 1 or 2 stations that came in on the tv.

I would always recommend staying at the tournament venue, that way if you have an hour or two before a match, you can always go lay down in your room. I know when I have stayed elsewhere, I get worn out because I'll walk around between matches in the casino just to kill time.

WTF? The deal is you win the trip and hotel and air is covered. No guarantee you're going to have separate rooms, but is your LO is saying he can't cover the rooms for your team? :confused:

The LO's make good money. Sounds like they just were over budget on your airfare and decided against paying the extra. I would call the APA head office if I were you......
 
yea you should call because the amount of money i'm getting from the LO covers flight, rooms + spending money for everyone. Even if we got 4 rooms, we would still have extra money.
 
"winning a free trip" shouldnt cost you money, in my opinion.

our LO cheaps out all the time, look at the cost of the trip, she budgeted $1400 for two people when I won this doubles tournament, the airfare and hotel was $850 US from Buffalo NY. I bet any money, we'll get MAYBE $100 cash when we leave, she'll just keep the rest.

OH! and if you dont want the trip, she offers $500 a person buy out......
