APA Las Vegas trips, how does your region do it?

Same deal with us. Cost me $400 for the flight alone. If the HR didn't come in for free rooms, I would have been stuck at Circus Circus. Ugh.

Oh, our rooms are at Circus Circus. Our league OP cancelled all of the Riv rooms because the price went up. Clowns for everyone!

C/C is at the very least, centrally located. The Riv is pretty much across the street. Its an older property that is focused on kids. If I were checking in there, I'd have a $20 bill ready upon check in and try the trick. When the supervisor isn't looking, ask the check in agent whether the "$20 trick will get you an upgraded room". If it does, give them the cash. If not, put the cash back in your pocket.

All league operators do it their own way

Each area is a franchised area so the league operators will differ in how they handle travel allowance. In Charlotte, NC we are allowed $8000 per team and the check is given to the captain to distribute. In most cases the captains will book rooms/flights and divide the money as they seem fit or as the team agrees on.

I had a team go several years ago and we had several players that didn't want to or couldn't go. Their share was divided among those going as most view the money as a travel allowance. I'm sure some teams may want to give something to someone if they really can't go for work/personal reasons and then the team may agree to give that person some of it, especially if that person won some critical matches to get the team to Vegas. Our league operator explains that the travel allowance is to get you there and if your whole team does not go then you must pay the funds back. APA is not a cash league.

In Charlotte NC we have always got $8000 per team and the LO will book the rooms at the Riv, if you win 8 and 9ball you get $16,000 per team. We won in 2001 in nineball with 7 players so we split the other thousand and the airfare and room cost $343.00 each for 10 days so we had about a thousand each in spending money. I hit the blackjack table for a little and my wife the team captain hit the slots for a bunch and we both came home with more than we left with, how rare is that ?--Leonard

PS 10 days is way to long to stay in Vegas

Circus Circus is by far the worst hotel I have EVER stayed in. We were (un)lucky enough to stay there last year for teams. Its very weird to see children in a casino at 4am when you are staggering home after a night at the bar.

I didnt know about the $20 trick, but I will try and see if it works. If it doesnt work, I'll ask a cabbie about the $20 trick for a ride to another hotel.....

That was really nice of your HR to do that.

I almost forgot, the LO at the States made an announcement that the loser of the finals would get a check for $500. In a way this kid of sucked because we would have had that extra money but in the end it would have been about $55 per person extra.

Hypothetically speaking, what if you guys won both 8 ball and 9 ball?

Then we would get both checks to split up. I know of a few players that were on two teams that are going, one 8ball and one 9ball and they just get more money thats all.

We are staying at the Sahara, it's a little further away but it's on the monorail so it's a lot easier to travel down the strip. Also we can take the monorail to the hilton stop and walk though it and go in the back of the RIV. So it's not to bad. Sahara is about a mile away.

I went there last last year in June and it was crazy HOT outside but we still did a lot of walking.

We're staying there too, thanks for the tip on getting back and forth to the Riv. I still wonder why they do this in August and not in the fall. It's too damn hot there in August.

This post is not about the travel funds. While APA is not structured as a 'cash' or payback league, there are no restrictions against it. When I was an LO, one of the four league areas I controlled wanted a payback. As such, the teams in that league area paid a slightly higher weekly fee, with the extra going into cash paybacks for the players.

You could be like a friend of mine, a former league teammate, who also plays a lot of soccer. They have a tournament in Vegas every year that his team often qualifies for - and they end up playing (I think) three matches a day, outside in the Vegas summer heat.

Pool players have it EASY. :P

OUCH...coming from a former soccer player myself, there is no way I would last in that heat.
