APA National Singles questions

The next year, I played someone who forgot to mark the pocket. I walked up to the table, proceeded to rack the balls and softly whispered, "Don't forget to mark the pocket next time." Surprised, he asked why I didn't take the win. I said, "Nobody travels all this way to win or lose like that."

Me thinks the game of pool could use more players with this kind of mindset. I raise my glass (it's milk, only 9:00 a.m. here) to you Jude !!!!

I won the first two regional tournaments I played in. The first time I went in my first match, I got out from near jail only to have my opponent tell me I forgot to mark my pocket. I looked down and realized the marker was already there (which is fine). Because of my rank, I thought it was extremely uncool for him to try and get a win that way.

I think, because of the handicap system, MANY APA players become obsessed with ALL the rules. It's really kinda sad because once you play anywhere else, you learn there's a higher authority that most pool players abide by: Integrity.

Nice move. Hope to met you one day in a match.

About 3 weeks ago the match I was in was hill/hill. The player marked the pocket with a cell phone. The phone was overhanging the rail into the pocket. I told the player about it. One of my team mates looked at me and asked why I did that because it was blocking part of the pocket and could have prevented the ball from going in. I said I don't need to win that way and why risk the phone being damaged. It is only a game. The ironic part is the following week that same team mate dropped his phone a bucket of paint. I guess the big guy loves to have fun in his own way.

That's interesting after everything I've heard about sandbagging. Does that rule not exist for the team tournament?

I think there is a rule to that effect. I don’t know the exact wording, but if several, perhaps more than two players are raised, the team itself could be DQ’d.

A fellow I know brought this up in conversation the other day - I don't recall exactly what he said, but it seemed like it went something along the lines of, he voluntarily moved himself up a notch (as he knew he was on the verge of going up anyway) because he was told if he was bumped up by the tournament folks, his whole team would be DQ'd. I believe the whole bit was "if you AND another of your team (totalling two) get bumped" but I'm not 100% on that.

I almost forgot to ask...

Is the cue ball a matched size and weight ball or is it one of those slightly larger or heavier barbox balls?

It would be great if someone might know the actual brand used last year.

I'm not a regular bar box player, but it seems that every barbox cueball I've run into is slightly oversized. The cueballs at the regionals looked like they had a blue Aramith logo on them and they were definitely oversized a little.

Thanks!

Getting raised 2 skill levels is a big no-no in APA, and I'm pretty sure that will DQ a team as well as the individual. The team can also be DQ'd by taking 4 raises in the same event.

Da Poet, did you qualify at the regional over at Palatine/Idols?

Uh yeah. I hope you're not the guy that thought that chaulk was not permitted to be used as a marker! :D

Yes, this is entirely accurate and based upon the rules of the APA, makes sense, too.

You're always going to find people who are slightly under/over rated but when there's a case of a player with 10 or more recent matches and their rating is significantly lower than it should be, it's obvious something is wrong. In the case of the inidividuals, a player would have to have at least 20 matches to even be in Vegas (maybe more). The system is solid enough that you should at least be within 1 of your correct rating and if you're a winning player (which regional champions usually are), you should be slightly on the high-side, if anything.

Nope, that wasn't me. I made myself and everyone I played mark their pockets, but that's just good practice for the National. I wouldn't call that on somebody (as long as they did at least call the pocket). I won the 3rd of the 4 SL6-7 tier brackets, which one of the SL4-5 brackets did you win?

By the way, what an amazingly smoothly run and on time event that regional was, eh?

Hey congratulations! There was some tough competition in those 6-7 brackets. Nice job!

Oh man, I got there at 8:00 am to get a little practice in on Saturday and ended up not leaving until 10:00pm. All this for three matches. Brutal. I was ready to just say screw it and split. In that amount of time, I could have worked and paid for a trip of my own. I felt bad for the folks that traveled in from out of state. I stuffed some napkins in my ears and tried to take a nap while sitting at one of the bar tables. It didn't work at all. I felt like a homeless person trying to sneak some indoor sleep in out of the weather. :D

Yeah, I had played a grand total of 2 matches by the time they sent the players home on Saturday night. I think the highlight of the event was when the bar prohibited the TO from using the PA to announce matches, and they had to wander around the crowded bar looking for that specific person. "Are you so-and-so? No? Do you know him? He's got a match right now. Ok, thanks."

That and when they pulled 4 of the 10 tables to make room for people watching the UFC event (Couture is the man, btw).
