Appleton: We are better players than Americans...

I talk in the present pal, not the past. If this is what an Englishman can do in 3 years then I'd hate to see what your precious records look like 20 years from now ;)

again what a joke of a comment......you all have been trying since your buddy ronny tried his hand at pool.....so its not like yall just started....and get your money up is all I can say.....in twenty years usa will still be up there on top for several reasons.....we are classier players.....the knowladge from years passed is here. And purer strokes and better metal games under fire for the cash.....and jb,......europe has little class....look at the way the fans behave....like apes at the zoo.....look at the stupid comment karl boyes left on his facebook......he has no shot in beating hatch so he shouldn't make comments like that...no class....and darren was acting like a bafoon....hatch gave yall a taste of your own medicine last year and yall are still crying about it.....lol.......like I said bring your cash....thats in the present pal.....you have little hope and less of a chance.....imo.....and you will never break us's records because of integrity and class.....you have none.......and you don't even come close to touching the rest of the world over there....taiwan....phillipines.....like I said bring it...or tell your players too.....hatch and shane already showed you what would happen against your two best players:grin:........

edit.....I want to go on record of saying that until recently mika has always held himself in good class along with thorston and most of the time ralf......mika has stepped over the line a few times and so has ralf.....thorston is the perfect example of class from what i have seen.....right up there with shane...

I would add Neils Feijen to that list as well

If you think the europeans don't act with class, whereas players like Hatch do then your vision of the truth is so unbelievably biased and blinkered I can't be bothered with this discussion any longer.

Multiple World Champions like Darren and Karl will be judged on their achievements and in time will be considered amongst the greatest players of all time - I'm absolutely certain of that.

You shouldn't waste time arguing with such idiots. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with his experience

Darren (Europeans) are more tournament soldiers than gamblers.

Yes, he does gamble, but not as good as many Americans. In tournament format, he's better than them, imo.

As of the comments from SJM and John Schmidt, great posts, and very true.

The top-top-players can beat anyone on any given day, no matter what country they come from. Except the Filipinos and Taiwanese, they win a little more often

I love the fact that what I have written years ago on this forum has now become the norm. "Tournament soldiers" is my creation. Love to see you Europeans are picking up the lingo in pool. LOL :grin-square:

Shall we now get into the other infamous expressions which sprang from my fingertips, such as "rack riggers," "bird break," and "robots"? ;)

I am appreciative to the Europeans for helping me to create such descriptive adjectives. In case anyone hasn't said it lately, thank you, Europeans "pool enthusiasts"! :)

Ah, "pool enthusiast," another one of mine. It is flattering to see these terms of art become the norm on AzBilliards. :p

lol...what a joke of a coment.....for the last three years...lol....ok what about the twenty before that......lol.....sorry buddy the records are still being held by usa players....the most world championships....us open championships.....and big tournys all around the globe...three years doesn't put you on top....when you have been on top as long as someone like archer or many other great us players we will talk.....until then your talking outta school.......bring your money over the pond and see what happens....if they are successfull then we will talk....and yes the mosoni cup is a joke as far as rating countries ranking in pool.....now bring a deccent argument to the table in your next reply....lol

#1 - Give the European players their due. They earned it and they darn well deserve it. I can't name a single player who has won the U.S. Open, or a World Championship only once that I can beat and I doubt that you can either. You may not think they are up to the body of work of an Earl, Efren or Sigel but what they have done is certainly respectable.

#2 - I don't think you would think that the Mosconi Cup would be a joke if the U.S. won and if you did I highly doubt that you would say it.

It's the class you show in defeat that counts most.

Appleton is a GOOFBALL let me tell u!! He has no shot with hatch or really anyone on the American team. Just watch and see what the American team does to them and then he can shut his mouth about how they r better players. If they r why dont he go and look at all the players stats and see who r the better players lmao!! Enough said! Mika and Ralph are GREAT players but the rest r just short stops!

Just trying to help make your meal go down:D

Let's please please not get into who is more "classy". I am afraid that there is too much evidence on YouTube of classless behavior that either side could dredge up. As an American who spent 10 years in Germany playing in the leagues there as well as in tournaments all over Europe I have to say that in general the players there are taught to treat pool as a sport and show good sportsmanship.

That said each player is human and subject to getting out of line once in a while.

We are all players here - no need to start a war of words over who is "better" and especially not who is classier.

If that's what comes out of the Mosconi Cup then I hope that it goes away. It's depressing to read these comments.

I think it's fun to get in the spirit of the competition but getting personal over it is too much. Well, y'all do what you want.....

Congrats to Europe - would have been cool to see the USA prevail but they didn't get there. All of their players work hard at being professional players and getting on the team is a huge goal and honor for them.

I always admired the way you can speak your mind, Genie Man. You have every right to write your opinion. Don't sweat what the Euros believe.

As you state, there are some very great European champions and players, period. As to who's who, well, history will tell the tale, and at the end of the story, will they all live happily ever after in the wonderful world of pool?

Selective memories dictates who's who today. Let them enjoy their fame while they can. In the end, it's the industry members, tournament staff, and fourth estate who live happily ever after. Pool players, on the other hand, will always dance like monkeys for the masses.

Seriuously? Appleton is a goof who can't compete? Says a guy who won't get in the box with Appleton for any decent amount playing even.

I must have been transported to an alternate dimension where Darren Appleton doesn't have a standing challenge to play 8 ball for 50 thousaand in the UK and no one is barred.

In my world he has put that out there and no one has stepped up. I think Darren will be at the Derby City Classic and more than willing to play Ryan McReesh for as much money as Ryan can stack on the light.

One thing Darren has not shown is a lack of gamble.

Like John Schmidt said it before, Americans and Europeans have awesome players,
and llike JB said it now again - all matches between these guys would be COIN FLIPS.

But maybe some of you are right with one thing.
Maybe, but only maybe americans are more like marathon runners and europeans more like sprinters,
but you would never be able to compare these sort of athletes correct, you know.

COIN FLIP ........... nothing more to say

Eric"h" ------ the next 20 years will be europes ;)

You have lot's of class, sir!

Mosconi Cup over. Europe won. Europe was the better team. Is the Mosconi Cup definitive proof that Europe is better than the US? definitely no. All of you crying, get over it. All of you celebrating arrogantly, get real.
What Darren Appleton said, is all Mosconi Cup build up, he seems like a really nice guy, and I'm sure he only has respect for the US team if you talk to him. Deserved MVP.

I am just curious, Stevansonson, and my inquiry has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

I notice this is your first post, so welcome.

What date did you join this forum and register? I was curious how long it takes to register and then be allowed to actually make a post.

Thanks in advance for your kind reply. :)

Hi Jen,

Everyone who excels in their respective trade has an "I love me!" wall in their office and/or home. We mount and display our recognition plaques, certificates, diplomas, 15-minutes-of-fame news articles on it; we store trophies on shelves mounted on it; etc.

I'm just curious as to how big your "I love me!" wall is?

It is actually beautifully organized, covering various topics, none of which pertain to pool. :grin-square:

If I may venture again to another topic, I would be happy to discuss capuchin monkeys or lemurs. One can't understand human nature without understanding what the brain is like in monkeys, but I'd say you have to go down to lemurs to really understand the origin of primate behavior. ;)

My wall is filled with records of facts, if you will. I'm a page banger by trade. :)

In another thread, in which Thorsten Hohmann was giving a pool clinic, I read the following comment from KickingChicken:

"When he began on Saturday, Thorsten, or "Toasti" as he prefers to be called, shared an observation that he said was rather shocking to him. That, in large part, American pool players lack structure in their practice routines. He said he finds it commonplace for players here in "The States" to simply throw balls on the table and shoot them in. And that many players seldom go any further than that. So he posed a couple of fair questions about this: "What is their goal and how do they measure their progress?" He said he found this peculiar to the USA and that in most other countries, players routinely had structured drills and practice sessions that measures their progress."
One reason why the Europeans may think they are better than their American counterparts may be because the Europeans are more disciplined about the game, especially in their practice and drill regimens. I'm inclined to think that Toasti may very well be right about that.

good post and a better question that needs a new thread...

Darren Appleton is a champion that has succeeded on pool's biggest stages. As an ardent pool fan, his opinion is of interest to me, this one included. Maybe he's right. Tough call. Giving credit where credit is due to the Europeans, who are playing some great pool, the truth remains that in 2010:

1) Archer beat a strong international field into submission at Turning Stone.

2) Van Boening crushed Immonen in their high stakes ten ball race to 100 in NYC.

3) Hatch beat Appleton in their high stakes ten ball race to 100 in Las Vegas in May.

4) Van Boening and Pinegar met in the final at Valley Forge in a ten ball event in which most of Europe's elite played

5) At Derby City, Brumback won the bank pool, Frost won the one pocket and although Efren won the nine ball, Americans Rodney Morris and Jeremy Sossei were second and third.

Then again, the Europeans dominated at the World 14.1 Championships, with Ortmann and Immonen the two finalists and Appleton captured the US Open.

In short, the Americans are still fighting the good fight when they compete against Europe's best, and the fans who get to watch these matchups are the real winners. Oooh, Derby City just over a month away!

sjm, I'm pretty sure a large contingent of the European players were not at Derby City last January -- due to some kind of conflict with a major Euro event iirc, so last year's results in the 9-Ball at DCC would not be reflective of European prowess at that game -- and of course, most of the Europeans still don't get that deep into Banks & One Pocket anyway, so I think your #5 point doesn't contribute much...

This is A GREAT post and ABSOLUTELY true. I'm guilty of the same kind of practice routines of just breaking the rack and then trying to run out. It lacks structure.
