Well....
Whether it was an intentional slug or whether Archer truly tried to give Rodney the tightest rack he could, the rack spoke for itself as Rodney didn't break them bad.
Plus, not to rip on Archer as we can't possibly know his actual thoughts when it happened, but when do people that deliberately cheat, actually out themselves after doing so, and confess to it?
And, i remember a couple of players that no longer play that were SO accustomed to giving flat racks in critical situations, that there were situations where i know they just did it out of habit, without even realizing it.
This is especially true of one guy i knew who was a master of the"wing ball spin"
Any hard core pool player will immediately know of the slug i am talking about, and how easy it is to make it LOOK like your giving a good rack, while manipulating the balls, all in literally, a split second.
Personally, when i have been in tournaments and threw up a turkey, IMMEDIATELY afterward, if the guy didn't pocket a ball, or didn't have a shot after making a ball or even if he made a ball and had a shot, i asked if he wanted a rerack. Most of the time, the only one who didn't, was the guy who made a ball and had a shot, but at least i offered.
Sometimes, if it was bad enough, i wouldn't even ask, and i would just rake up all the balls, and let them break again, even if i had a straight in shot after them not pocketing anything.
In a LOT of situations, i would have them break and run out on me, and on a couple of occasions when the match was hill hill when it happened, i would have them break and run out on me for the win.
So personally, i don't care if it was intentional or not.
I know what i would do if it i put up a slug like that in competition.
There is just no excuse for it.
But on the flip side, watching Rodney make a come back and watching the momentum gain in his favor, i have to say that the slug actually ADDED to the drama and made it more exciting, and i know I personally thought that after Rodney managed to win that rack, that the only way he would lose was if he failed to make a ball and have a shot, or if he were to scratch, and as it turns out, he swished the cue ball in the hole the next break.
That is not to say that i think people should go and toss up slugs all over the place, but rather it reflects on my personal view, that a match with a lot of suffering and drama, is way more exciting to watch then a match where it's just a non stop display of players running out all over the place.
Sure, great displays of pool are nice to watch as they are inspiring, like watching Davenport's flashback to truly being a hungry fierce competitor, but if i had to choose, i'd like to see great displays of pool, mixed in with some situations where there was a high suffer content, especially at the finish line where it's so much more dramatic.
But that's just me
